Vehicle Detail
* * * 1973 Volvo 1800ES * * * 3 owners from new Fresh mechanical rebuild Rust free, hit free example Up for bids is this terrific 1973 Volvo 1800ES. Relatively rare, Volvo built these "Sport Wagons" over just a 2 year period; 1972-1973. This car was sold new in Eugene, Oregon and has had 3 Oregon owners since. This car is a prime example of what happens when 'Volvo Quality' meets 'Pride of Ownership'. Always garaged, this is a car that was never neglected, never handed off to a teenager, and always fastidiously maintained. The car has 9000 miles on the clock since a full engine rebuild, it runs and drives perfectly. Click to enlarge any of the photos below, a link to a slideshow of all the enlarged images is available to view at the bottom of the page. The car has had one repaint in its original color of Sea Green, code 115. The repaint was done to a high standard, you will find no masking lines, areas of overspray or other imperfections. On close inspection you'll find a few touched in chips, a few minor dings, and some road rash on the nose of the car. Although the car presents very well, it is a car that has been driven, and shows some accompanying wear. The body on this Volvo is impressive, showing laser straight sightlines, perfect panel gaps, and no rust problems anywhere. The undercarriage is likewise rock solid. The car rides on a set of Volvo Bertone wheels with Bridgestone Potenzas in 205-60-15. All of the chrome on this car is original and in great shape with no pitting anywhere. The belt line trim strips show a few small dings, otherwise all of the stainless trim looks good. All signal lenses look like new. Headlights are Bosch H4's. The rear window channel is rust free, the rear valance on this car shows none of the rust problems that you sometimes see on this model. Both the grill and chrome surround are in great shape. All of the car's glass are original Volvo branded pieces in great shape, even the windshield. The interior can be seen as a litmus test to the level of care this car was given. All original, it's still in exceptional condition. The front seats in these late 1800's were prone to breaking down, these are terrific. Like most Volvo seats, they're really comfortable yet offer good support. The leather is still supple and has taken on a nice patina. All of the car's weatherstripping is original and still in good condition. All of the carpet is original and still looking great with no thin spots or sun fading. Both the upper and lower dashpads are free of cracks or splits. All of the gauges work and show good readings. The car runs cool and shows great oil pressure. All lights and signals operate correctly. The clock works intermittently. The car has not been smoked in. The rocker switches were a '73 only feature, all of them operate correctly. The radio is a modern unit based on a retro style, it provides good sound. The car was optioned with AC, which works perfectly. It was converted to FR-12 in 2007. This interior is clean and crisp everywhere you look. Both door panels are in nice shape. Factory stickers on the door ends and jambs are still present. The back seat looks like new. It folds down to create 28 square feet of cargo space. It doesn't look like this car has done much heavy hauling, the carpet and headliner are in super condition. Both drain holes in the back hatch window channel are clear, there are no rust problems in this area. The trunk seems to appear just as the workers in the Olofstrom factory left it. Original Goodyear spare, all jacking equipment, and original tool kit. Both side wells are clean and rust free. The motor was rebuilt in 1997 and has run about 9000 miles since. It was rebuilt with hardened seats for use with unleaded fuel. Front and rear of the block were machined to accept the upgraded seal, this car will not leak on your garage floor. A Fitchel Sachs clutch kit was installed along with new transmission and engine mounts. The braking system was gone through and a new master cylinder was installed. Rebuilt calipers with new pads. New fuel pump and tank filter. New mufflers. The engine bay presents well, an IPD valve cover completes the package. The hood shows its original insulation pads, still holding in there after 131K miles. The car starts readily and runs out great. The motor pulls strongly, the gearbox shifts smoothly, the ride is tight and responsive. The overdrive feature makes this car a pleasure to drive on the freeway. This car offers a good mix of sport and comfort, you definitely feel part of the driving process but without the harshness that some sports cars exhibit. This Volvo has a nice comfortable ride, good visibility, good braking, and an overall feeling of solid reliability that is unique to Volvos. The undercarriage shows all original floors and sills with no evidence of rust repair or accident history. The car comes with its original owners manual, warranty booklet, AC booklet, and a car cover. Click here for a slideshow of all of the enlarged images.
