Steering is precise, confident and satisfying. The 350Z maintains outstanding control and avoids overreaction.

The suspension is defiantly taut while maneuverability and stability are top-notch.

Nissan has done an excellent job of stiffening the chassis for the convertible -- there's very little body shake, even on rough roads.

The aerodynamic shaping of the Z roadster's body, along with the slope of windshield, the height of the windows, and the little glass piece between to two headrests all work together to keep air flowing straight over your head and not down on top of you.

The 350Z has a modern design, but styling cues adapted from the original 240Z include a long-nose short-deck profile.

The wheels are pushed toward the corners to emphasize nimbleness. For 2007, standard wheels are 18 inches in diameter.

The top operates easily. Flip a lever just above the rear-view mirror and press a switch, and a hatch located just behind the two seats opens, and the cloth top descends into the space beneath it, then the hatch drops back down.

The automatic top goes down in 20 seconds and contains a heated glass rear window. This does not affect trunk space, which is modest but quite usable.

Inside, this is strictly a two-passenger vehicle, although those two can be full-size adults and not feel cramped.

Considerable aluminum is used in the cockpit. Three gauge pods are installed on the instrument panel, and the steering wheel and gauges move together as a unit.

The bucket seats are supportive and adjustable to the point that anyone should find a comfortable position.

There are quite a few little storage cubbyholes, but no traditional glove compartment. Instruments and controls are all properly placed and easy to use.

The heart of every Z is the 3.5-liter V-6 engine, which has climbed in horsepower over the years to the 306 for 2008 and is teamed with a very competent five-speed automatic transmission. Nissan's 3.5-liter V-6 develops 268 pounds-feet of torque. The engine includes features such as a dual-inlet air-intake system and variable exhaust cam timing.

This engine and transmission deliver an EPA-rated 18 mpg in the city, 25 mpg highway.

Trunk capacity in the roadster is 4.1 cubic feet. There's no glove box, but it has a lockable floor box for storage.

Antilock brakes with brake assist are standard. Side-impact airbags are standard on convertibles. Traction control is standard on all models. All models are equipped with a tire pressure monitoring system.
