The idea behind the SRT (Street and Racing Technology) treatment is to maximize key areas such as powertrain and braking performance, handling prowess, exterior design and aerodynamics, and interior sportiness and comfort -- in a balanced fashion.
The basis being-don't add horsepower without adding brakes and suspension to match. Limited production runs and higher pricing are a given, and add a measure of exclusivity. But it takes more that just bolting in a big motor and stiffer springs.
Like all Crossfires, the SRT-6 is an international blending of pieces and teamwork: the powertrain comes from Mercedes AMG, the car is assembled by Karmann in Germany, and the design and tuning is done here in America.
Springs, shocks, bushings, anti-rollbars, wheels, and tires are all spec'd for higher performance, although there's surprisingly little ride penalty when compared to the base Crossfire.
TheSRT also dialed the Electronic Stability Program's intrusiveness level down a notch, allowing the aggressive driver some oversteer-induced fun prior to the electronannies kicking in.
Brakes? The huge, vented, four-wheel discs would be more than enough for a larger car, much less the compact, 3330-pound SRT-6.
This powertrain doesn't rumble and roar like a big V-8 would, but it emits a smooth, sophisticated whoop through its dual exhaust outlets that's appropriate for the car's mission.
The engine is quiet and docile when cruising, and will loaf through traffic all day. Yet it will rip out five-second 0-60-mph times with no drama when called upon.
The AutoStick, offering both Winter and Summer modes, also allows manual shift control.
Knott and Company maintained a subtle approach to exterior upgrades; any more would have been too much, and the Crossfire already has a lot of design detail etched into its tiny body.
The standard front fascia is swapped for a more aggressive splitter design, and the standard car's deployable rear wing is swapped for a larger fixed piece that provides more downforce, in keeping with the SRT-6's higher performance envelope.
The SRT-6s jewel-like 18- and 19-inch wheels look appropriately elegant and expensive.
The SRT design team didn't fiddle with much inside, other than a 200-mph speedo, some snazzy stitching, and sportier, more supportive seats finished in a delicious blend of Nappa leather with grippy Alcantara suede inserts and bolsters.
Only two occupants can fit inside the Crossfire's two-toned twin-cockpit interior.
An optional wood trimed console flows from the top of the instrument panel through the center of the car.
The navigation system is a terribly clever device, because it provides a navigation system without any need for a full sized LCD screen. It provides most of the features of a standard navigation system, apart from showing a map; it does show the next turn and the compass.
The navigation system is surprisingly easy to set up, with the usual point of interest or address options for destination, and a woman telling you where to go. (we are including nav disc)
The 3.2-liter helical-supercharged, intercooled, aluminum SOHC V-6 used in both Crossfire SRT-6s last saw duty in the 2002-04 Mercedes-Benz C32 and SLK32 AMG, and is rated at 330 horsepower in Chrysler trim.
At 310 pounds feet of torque, this V-6 cranks out the same amount of grunt as a late 1980s 5.0-liter Mustang, a perennial musclecar fave.
The high-tech blower used on this motor is designed to smooth out the hiccups served up by supercharged engines when the throttle is closed at high rpm.
The only transmission choice is a five-speed automatic; there is no manual, but the responsive AutoStick shifter helps satisfy those who like to mix their own gears.
Safety items include antilock brakes, traction control, tire pressure monitoring and a vehicle stability system. Side airbags are built into the doors.
