Vehicle Detail

* * * 1967 Mercedes 200D Heckflosse * * * Excellent original example 33K original miles Runs and drives perfectly Up for bids is this fantastic 1967 Mercedes 200D sedan.  If you've been in the market for a Mercedes Fintail you're probably used to seeing lots of worn out examples come up for sale on eBay.  The utilitarian nature of the W110 sedans meant that people drove them regularly, it's unusual to find one with under 100,000 miles on it and to find one with under 50,000 is rare indeed.  This sweet little sedan was sold new at Don Rasmussen Mercedes here in Portland and has been in the care of just 2 owners since 1967.  The car sports a beautiful original interior, fantastic original trim, and an undercarriage that is truly impressive for a 43 year old car.  Click to enlarge any of the photos below, a link to a slideshow of all the enlarged images is available to view at the bottom of the page. The car is painted in "Graphite Grey", code DB190.  Most of the car's paint is original, the passenger side and driver's rear quarter have been repainted in the past.  They did a pretty nice job with these repainted areas, you can tell it was carefully masked and decently prepped.  The areas with original paint show some polish marks and other flaws but it's not looking too bad for a 43 year old finish.  The overall appearance of this car is good, perhaps the biggest flaw being the subtle difference between the old and new paint finishes.  The body is very straight, sightlines are good with no waviness, you may find one or two small dings if you go looking for them.  The body and undercarriage of this car are super solid with no rust issues - no bubbling, no blistering, no problems.  Panel fit is excellent, doors all close with a precise 'click'.  Panels gaps are to the quality standards Mercedes is known for, in other words, perfect.  Tires are Toyo radials with good tread. The chrome and trim on the car are exceptional, you will find no pitting of any kind.  The bumpers are simply terrific for their age.  The chromed headlight surrounds are without flaw.  The grill, surround, emblem and star are unmarked and present as new.   The polished wiper arms and blade assemblies are original to the car, correct examples of these are difficult to find, the ones on this car are mint. Front and rear signal lenses are excellent with no flaws, they remain as clear and crisp as they were from new.  Headlights are the original US-spec General Electric units from new.  All of the car's glass are original Sekurit branded pieces, windshield is Sigla, marked "Made in Western Germany".  All of the glass seals and window felts are in great shape. The interior continues the survivor theme, it's incredibly well preserved.  The "Caviar" (black) MB-Tex seats are in fantastic shape, probably the best original MB seats I've ever seen.  The dash pad has absolutely no cracks, pretty rare for this series.  Steering wheel is in great shape with no splits.   Back seat area is just as untouched and original as the front.    All ashtrays in this car are unused.   This car was ordered with the optional headrests, and the desirable floor mounted gear shift lever. The door panels are all beautifully preserved, all locks work, all windows roll up and down smoothly.  The door weatherstripping on this car is truly impressive.  All of it is original, yet is appears brand new, just as soft and pliable as it was from day one.  The headliner is very nice, with no tears or staining.  The cloth windlacing around the door perimeters is in great shape with no fraying.      Here's a picture I took (quickly) while driving, it shows the unique ribbon speedometer used in these cars.  It starts as solid yellow, then transitions to red as speed increases and more caution is warranted.  All of the gauges in this cluster are working correctly and show great readings.  Oil pressure is always pegged at the top, the temp gauge is always right at 180.  The 3 indicator lights on the lower right all work; ignition - parking brake - high beam.  Heater levers move freely, fan works, horn works, all lights, signals and indicators are functioning as they should, clock keeps good time - this car is turn-key.  All of the chrome trim on the dash shows zero pitting or tarnishing.  The underdash area is untouched and just as the workers in Sindelfingen left it.   The trunks in these W110 sedans are deceptively large, with room enough for 4 golf bags. Trunks often serve as litmus tests, this one being another indicator of just how solid this car is.  Most W110 trunks pick up some surface rust under the mat, with more serious corrosion common in the left and right wells.  You'll find this trunk to be totally original, never repainted and just as solid as can be.  As you would expect, this car runs and drives as well as it looks.  It starts instantly (after the ignition indicator glows) and runs out great.  Like most diesels it emits a puff of smoke on startup, but does not smoke at all afterwards.  The car runs down the road with the tight and balanced feel that you only get with a low mile car, it's a pleasure to drive.  Everything functions just as it's intended, there are no 'old car' gremlins with this Mercedes, to drive it is to love it.  The car shifts smoothly, brakes well, tracks straight and does not leak fluids.  If you're like me, the sound of a well running diesel motor is mechanical music to the ears, you can access an audio recording of this car running here. This was recorded with the hood up and the microphone right next to the engine.  With the hood closed the car is not this loud. The engine bay is all original, and for a diesel, exceptionally clean.  The firewall pad is in perfect shape, a Mercedes branded battery completes the package on this special car. The undercarriage is clean and dry, the exhaust is original to the car.  If you haven't enlarged any of the photos yet, these shots of the undercarriage are worth looking at.  I'll let the pictures do the talking.  The rear floorpan seams are a common rust spot on these cars, these are totally solid.  All 4 wheelwells show no corrosion anywhere.  The sills on this car are pristine, still with the jack plug covers in place.  The car comes with 2 original factory service manuals, expensive items nowadays.  Also included is a full assortment of owner's manuals, all in mint condition.  The car has 2 sets of original Nieman and Huf keys.
