By the time Ronald Reagan took office as President, in 1981, the Economy was in a Sad State. The World Recession had the U.S. inflation at a record 14% while unemployment hit 7.4%. America filed for a record 1,210,000 divorces...a sure sign of depressive 'down' times. Many folks took refuge in their TV sets: Top Television Shows were "Dallas", "60 Minutes", "The Jefferson" and "m*a*s*h*". Medical costs hit an all-time high, fueled by the coming of AIDS to America and reports of record amounts of cholesterol being gauged. Video arcades popped up all over America and Atari announced the new home game version of what would now be considered 'infantile in comparison: "Asteroids". Sadly, the Federal Communications Commission eased restrictions for radio commercials and now radio stations could air as many commercials as they wanted- no obligation to allocate time for News or Public Service. It gave music fans one more reason to turn of their radios and turn on M.T.V., the new all-music video cable channel that was taking over the Nation by storm. No surprise the immediate Top Hit was the Buggle's "Video Killed The Radio Star" both, on Cable, and Radio. Black Musicians crossed over into the Punk World in releasing new artists like Rick James with "Super Freak" and Prince with "Little Red Corvette" and "Purple Rain". Incredibly Prince would be booed off the stage, opening for the Rolling Stones yet, come back three years later as the Hottest Artist in the Universe. In the news; President Reagan would be wounded by attempted Assassin Mark Hinckley , loved by all, Reagan would later lower income tax by 5% and up to 20% by 1983. Sandra Day O'Connor would be sworn in the US Supreme Court on the basis of supporting the death penalty and abortion rights. On a lighter note. 'Cat fights' on "Dynasty" would win TV raves with massive audiences, 'Raider's of the Lost Ark" would storm the movie box office and Kathleen Turner would stun audiences with her performance in "Body Heat" shot with a low-budget in humid, Lantana Fla. Then, who's to flaw Faye Dunaways performance as Joan Crawford in "Mommie Dearest" ("no more wire hangars... ever!!! "). Horror Genre Films would make a comeback in "Friday the 13th, Halloween Two, and an "American Werewolf in London". Put On your Memory Cap and sing along with the Top Single Hits: "Physical" with Olivia Newton John, "Bette Davis Eyes" by Kim Carnes, "Endless Love" with Diana Ross, and "Kiss on My List" with Hall and Oates. The again, who could forget "Arthurs Theme" (Best You Can Do") from the Mega-Hit Film "Arthur" with Christopher Cross. 1981 was a Less Than Memorable Year for the Auto Industry. Between ALL the Auto Makers, they only produced 6.2 million cars ..the lowest level in 20 years. Poor General Motors got saddled with recalling 6.4 million cars to replace two lousy bolts in the suspension on all their Cars made from 1978-1981. The Lone Ranger bright spot was Buick .....who after years of 'no convertibles' (made by any manufacturer) offered it's 'new' Riviera Ragtop. It was an immediate success (and now very collectible). You can't relate to popularity, until you go to Italy and see just how popular Fiats are there. The Fiat 124 Spider is, and was, the Most Popular Italian Sports Car Ever. It was popular when it launched, and is even more popular today. It has a staggering amount of enthusiasts who are very proud of this little piece of Italian Engineering. With a Belt-drive, Twin Cam engine under it's belt ....it is a Spirited Performer. Its Coil Spring Rear Suspension and Four Corner Disc Brakes gave it a wonderful Dynamic Refinement not often found at this price level... in fact, no one who has ever driven one will ever forget its Chirpy Character. This handsome body was designed by, no other than, Pininfarina in Italy. The same folks who have penned many a Beautiful Ferrari body (in fact, this car is said to look exactly like the 275 GTS). Its enduring appeal, even when saddled with the cumbersome Federal Style bumpers has always made it the Top Selling model in America. Engine capacity has grown from 1608cc at inception to 1756 in 1972 to the new 2.0 lite engine released in 1979. Production ceased in 1985 but, the car remains so popular.... parts and service are available anywhere in the Country. It's hard not to have fun in this Sporty Two Seater. Fiat even installed a rear seat for Legless Children. Ours is a Super Rare Fuel Injected Model which recvd. the "X" designation and Rarer yet, an Automatic Transmission. A True Collector Item for overseas buyers or for this side of the Pond. Pininfarina S.p.A. (BIT: PINF) (short for Carozzeria Pininfarina) is an Italian car design firm and coachbuilder in Cambiano, Italy.Founded as Società anonima Carrozzeria Pinin Farina in 1930 by automobile designer and builder Battista "Pinin" Farina, Pininfarina has been employed by a wide variety of high-end automobile manufacturers, including Ferrari, Maserati, Rolls-Royce, Cadillac, Jaguar, Volvo, Alfa Romeo, and Lancia. It also has designed trams in France, high-speed trains in Holland, and trolleys in the USA. Since the 1980s Pininfarina has been consulted on industrial and interior design.Pininfarina was run by Battista's grandson Andrea Pininfarina until his death in 2008. Andrea's younger brother Paolo Pininfarina was appointed as successor.[1]The Pininfarina Group employs more than 3,000 people in subsidiary company offices throughout Europe, as well as in Morocco and China. Pininfarina is registered and publicly traded on the Borsa Italiana (Milan Stock Exchange). The company was founded as Società anonima Carrozzeria Pinin Farina in 1930 by automobile designer and builder Battista "Pinin" Farina.Pininfarina was run by Battista's grandson Andrea Pininfarina until his death in 2008. Andrea's younger brother Paolo Pininfarina was appointed as successor.[1] After World War II, a number of automotive manufacturers were interested in working with Pininfarina, whose highly innovative Cisitalia 202 design had attracted wide attention.[2]The subsequent cooperation with Nash Motors resulted in high-volume production of Pininfarina designs and provided a major entree into the United States market. In 1952, Pininfarina visited the U.S. for the unveiling of his design for the Nash Ambassador and Statesman lines, which, although they did carry some details of Pininfarina's design, were largely designed by Nash's then-new in-house styling staff when the original Farina-designed model proved unsuited to American tastes. The Nash-Healey sports car body was, however, completely designed and assembled in limited numbers from 1952 to 1954 at Pininfarina's Turin facilities. Nash heavily advertised its link to the famous Italian designer, much as Studebaker promoted its longtime association with Raymond Loewy. As a result of Nash's marketing efforts, Pininfarina became well-known in the United States. A similar arrangement was repeated in the late 1980s when Pininfarina designed (and partially assembled) the Cadillac Allanté for General Motors. The car's bodies were assembled and painted in Italy before being flown to Detroit for final vehicle assembly. Pininfarina Sverige AB in Uddevalla, Sweden, was established in 2003 as a joint venture (JV) between Volvo Cars and Pininfarina. The JV is owned 60% by Pininfarina and 40% by Volvo.
