PLEASE DO NOT BID UNLESS YOU 100% FULLY INTEND ON BUYING THIS CAR. THIS SHOULD BE A PROJECT CAR IF YOU WANT TO DO IT RIGHT. "Easily the most desirable model of the bunch this one featured Pontiac's 400c.i. mill. The 400 was equipped with a 4BBL carburetor and dual exhausts and made 330bhp @ 4,800 rpm. Other standard features unique to this model included a floor mounted shifter, chrome engine parts, sports suspension and shocks, heavy-duty battery, a Power Flex Fan, and either red stripe or whitewall tires. This model is most easily recognized by the twin-scoop hood with "400" emblems located on the rear edge of the hood bulge. The 1968 Firebird 400 has produced some of the fastest 1/4 mile times of the muscle car era. In recent years, under the pure stock drags racing format, Firebirds (running on bias ply tires) have consistently posted ET's in the low to mid 12 second range. Without question, the 1968 Firebird 400 was one of Pontiac's most impressive factory offerings." CLICK HERE: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=itJjGL6tvr4&feature=related FOR A VIDEO OF THIS STYLE CAR. HISTORY OF THIS VEHICLE: This was my father's car. He had owned it since the 70's. I remember he used to work on the car a lot and was always adding something new to it. When he restored it to show room condition in the 1980's, I took it to the high school prom and to the beach a few times. The switch for the automatic convertible top will need to be worked on. I think my father said that one of the pistons in the trunk was not working properly. He had been putting the top up and down manually since the 80's. He had the car in his barn until he passed away in the late 90's. This car has been in my garage with a cover on it, however, the elements have still taken hold of it and it will need a new paint job and some body work. It is due for a new restoration. I would start this car approximately once every month just to keep things lubricated and the battery charged. The vinyl covering of the convertible top will need to be replaced as it no longer exists. My mechanic said that the frame is in good shape and that I should hold on to this car. My wife thinks otherwise and I'm afraid that this car would be too powerful for my daughter to handle. There is no power steering and the engine has a lot more horsepower than it did when it was stock. Just breathing on the pedal can lay dual patches of rubber on the road. Be careful!!! THIS CAR HAS BEEN TONS OF FUN TO DRIVE AND DEMANDS TO BE DRIVEN TO THE TRACK!!! DO NOT MISS THE OPPORTUNITY TO OWN THIS CAR!!!! Every time I start up the engine, it kills me knowing that I have to part with it. When the engine is idling, you can actually hear it say, "C'mon Big Daddy, let's go for a run!!!" THIS BABY WILL BE MISSED!!! DETAILS: Mileage show's as 72250 at least on the body. I don't know how many miles are on the engine but I suspect much less than that as it runs very strong. The serial number shows that there should have been a '68 I-6 engine in this vehicle. At some point my father replaced it with a '68 V-8 400 with approximately 330-366 HP. The engine code shows either a "YT" or "XT", reflecting this as a correct engine for this year vehicle and for being an automatic. I believe it has a lot more horsepower now due to the work he had done to the engine. I believe it has an Edelbrock racing cam in it. It has a Holley 700 Double Pumper carb and an Edelbrock manifold. I believe the stock shifter is a Hurst and the transmission is either a Powerglide or a Hydra-matic. It currently has straight pipes for exhaust. I believe the original color was Verdoro green and I remember that it used to say "Ram Air II" next to the "400" emblem on the bulging hood scoops and on the edge of the trunk lid. I believe the hood with the scoops and the hood mounted tachometer were not original on this particular bird; however, they are correct for the year. The hood tachometer is broken and will need to be worked on or replaced. The only spot of rot that I found was on the passenger side front quarter panel near the indicator light. The rear bumper has a dent on the left corner. The interior is in good shape; however, the driver and passenger seat need attention. The padded dash has some cracks. The original radio is in the trunk. The car retains the original 5-spoke rims. The steering is loose but my mechanic said that it can be adjusted on the steering box. He also said that the car is solid all around underneath. TERMS OF SALE: $2000.00 DEPOSIT DUE VIA PAYPAL WITHIN 24 HOURS OF AUCTION END WHICH IS NON-REFUNDABLE.
