Vehicle Detail
Modern Masterpiece: 1985 Porsche Carrera Sunroof Coupe! Porsche experts agree: the 1984-89 Carrera is the best 911 ever built. It is the last 911 to feature a body style now considered "classic" and the first to incorporate technological advancements such as the vaunted BOSCH Motronic engine management. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Sure, subsequent generations of the 911 yielded good cars, too, but the Carrera struck the perfect balance between old school and jet age. It is a far cry from the hyper-complex, computer-dominated, heavyweight 4-seater offered up by Zuffenhausen today. No, this Carrera is the last user friendly Porsche that can be worked on with hand tools instead of plug-and-play computers. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Not surprisingly, therefore, that clean examples of the Carrera have already made the smooth transition from supercar to highly sought-after collectible and are coveted by knowledgeable Porsche aficionados worldwide. A "keeper" should be 100% rust and accident free, come with documented low mileage, and show that it has enjoyed a sheltered life. Click on any of the above images for a full-size view The magnificent 1985 Porsche Carrera Sunroof Coupe presented here, VIN *WPOABO912FS121488*, built in April of 1985, is a prime example of the very desirable "original spec" 3.2-liter Carrera. A US-market car and one of just 1,959 built, it was shipped to California brand new and has travelled documented 84,899 miles in 25 years. That's less than 3,500 miles annually, on average! Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) The car was sold new on June 26, 1985 at Anderson-Behel Porsche in Santa Clara, California, where it remained with its original owner for the next 4 years, when it was acquired by its second owner to date on April 22, 1989. The second owner resides in San Ramon, California, where he owns and operates a famous seafood restaurant. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) From the date of purchase until 1989, the Carrera was serviced "by the book" at the Porsche dealership. From 1989 on, it was serviced by an independent garage. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) This Porsche comes with factory Owner's Manual and Service Booklet, still in the original burgundy vinyl pouch. Nine service invoices confirm not only that this car has been utterly reliable, but also that the recorded mileage is consistent throughout the years, as confirmed via Autocheck (Page 1, 2, 3). This California Porsche is still registered to its original, blue-and-gold license plate. Let's now inspect the car in great detail, starting with the trunk. Click on any of the above images for a full-size view The luggage area of a vintage, air-cooled Porsche always yields valuable clues to its overall condition, as neglect tends to manifest itself here first. We even removed the trunk carpeting to examine every nook and cranny: everything appears factory fresh. Unused VREDESTEIN inflatable spare and factory tire jack are present. And, yes, the trunk light works! Besides the FUCHS wheels, there's quite a lengthy list of noteworthy options, including: Sports seats with electrical adjustments, left and right (M383/387) Full leather seats (M409) Power windows (M651) Power mirrors, left and right Air Conditioning (M559) Automatic heating control (M424) BLAUPUNKT AM/FM/Cassette stereo Two speakers on rear shelf (M494) Fog lights (M566) Automatic two-point rear seat belts (M185) Stone guard decal (M391) Spoiler package (M473) Sport shock absorbers (M474) Engine compartment light (M482) Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) The striking Iris Blue Metallic paint is a rare and desirable factory color option. Apart from a few, almost unavoidable rock chips in the front bumper/valance area that have been touched up with a fine brush, the glossy finish looks immaculate. Let's have a peek inside now. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Right away, we are impressed by the super sanitary, well-preserved door panel, harbinger of more good things to come. Click on any of the above images for a full-size view Flawless, perforated, light ivory headliner. Electric sunroof operates smoothly! Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Dash layout is pure, classic 911. Apart from a nice, leather shift knob, everything here is bone stock. Dash surface is flawless. Notice leather-wrapped steering wheel's superb state of preservation. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) The iconic, white-on-black VDO gauges all work perfectly, even the clock! Notice odometer reading of 084,899. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Those spacious leather rear seats don't look like they've ever been used. Push a small red button and the back rests fold down individually as needed to create additional luggage space. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Before we embark on our much-anticipated test drive, we need to inspect two more areas: engine bay and undercarriage. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) As clean and dry as the remainder of the car, its potent heart, the matching numbers 3.2-liter boxer, delivering 207 horses @ 5,900rpm, runs every bit as good as it looks. It never needed any work beyond regular servicing. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) There are no odd noises to report, no annoying oil leaks, and there's no exhaust smoke on initial start-up. The air conditioning has just been serviced and works fine. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) This 911 has nothing to hide. It doesn't need diapers, either! The pristinely preserved undercarriage shows no hint of rust or accident damage, just factory finishes and German steel. Did you expect anything less from this fine 911? The factory's enhanced corrosion-protection includes liberal zinc-plating; even outside of California this Carrera could conceivably last forever! Healthy suspension pan Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Wednesday, July 21st was another super nice summer day here in Southern California. We decided to take a ride in the Porsche, heading to the New Age enclave Ojai, where we watched pottery class participants lunch on watercress-and-tofu sandwiches. Yummy! Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Piloting this 911 elicits pure joy; it starts, runs, handles, and stops excellently. On our trip from Ventura to Ojai, other motorists respectfully relinquished the fast lane as soon as they spotted the Iris Blue beauty 911 in their rearview mirrors. It's the real thing! Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Especially compared to a 911 from the early '70, it's just amazing how refined and more benevolent a 3.2 Carrera really is. Playing with the stereo, we've once managed to take off in 3rd gear and the car didn't even complain. Whereas Porsche's 2.2 or 2.4-liter Boxer needs to rev its heart out, the 3.2 just goes like the proverbial bat out of hell, from slightly above idle all the way to redline, determined to eat up the road. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Returning home, we once again felt confident in naming the 3.2 Carrera the most perfectly balanced classic Porsche 911 money can buy. Unlike some of its earlier siblings, the 3.2 can easily be enjoyed on a daily basis, if so desired. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Be it as a prestigious everyday sports car or a cherished collectible, this superb Carrera provides unequalled driving enjoyment. Keep it garaged, tuned and detailed, and it will never lose its value; that's guaranteed! It's easy to maintain (remember the famous Carrera chain tensioners), inexpensive to insure, fully accepted by the PCA crowd, and looks as good as a late-model Ferrari Spyder, at a fraction of the cost. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Rarely does the opportunity arise to acquire a cherished 3.2-liter PORSCHE 911 Sunroof Carrera that's as desirable as this one, sporting a great California provenance, superbly attractive color, multitude of factory options, and low miles. Did we mention that classic Porsches are gas-misers, too? This fabulous example is ready for a cross-country drive, anytime . . .
