As a wedding gift, Mr. Auchincloss presented his new wife with a car. But being in the depths of WWII, no new cars were being produced for the duration. So, Mr. Auchincloss gave his wife a like-new 1940 Ford Deluxe Convertible.Janet’s daughter, Jacqueline (born in 1929 when Janet was Mrs. Jack Bouvier) was 13 at the time of Janet’s marriage to Hugh Auchincloss. The family moved to the Auchincloss estate in McLean, Virginia, where the car was registered in January of 1943. Janet drove the car sparingly during the war years, as gasoline was rationed to save tires and rubber for the war effort. Young Jackie learned to drive in this car. Her driving led to a notable incident, confirmed later in a telephone conversation between the current owner and Jackie’s half-brother, Hugh Auchincloss III. In 1945, when Jackie was 16 – and before she had her driver’s license – she was driving this car with Hugh III as a passenger from their Virginia home to Newport. Along the way, Jackie was speeding and was pulled over by the police. Ready to give Jackie a ticket, the young officer was charmed by her beauty and charisma as she talked her way out of the ticket. The officer let her proceed with only a warning – probably the first incident of Jackie’s charm working its magic as it would many times years later when she was the First Lady. Jackie attended college at Vassar and later the Sorbonne in France, and the trusty Ford Convertible was always available to her upon her return visits home. Of course, in 1953 Jacqueline Bouvier married young John Fitzgerald Kennedy and the rest, as they say, is history.Shortly before Jackie's graduation from George Washington University in 1951, the Auchincloss family sold the Ford, and it has had several owners over the following 60 years. It currently resides in a large private collection of classic cars in the Pacific Northwest. The car appears to have received a repaint, top and interior restoration at some time in the past. It has been well preserved and cared for during its life and today exhibits a fine patina. It shows as a very original 70 year-old car should. The car has no rust issues. Please see photos of the clean underside. The flathead V-8 engine runs smooth and strong. Dual exhaust. The car is maintained today by a personal mechanic who oversees all of the cars in this collection. It is fully optioned with Ford radio, heater and clock, dual sideview mirrors and fenderskirts. Please see photos for an accurate look at this car today. The ownership of the car is fully documented by the State of Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. Please see copy of letter accompanying this listing. The car can be preserved, shown and enjoyed as it is or taken to the next level. The choice is yours. Either way, with the documented provenance of ownership by one of America's first families and the future First Lady, this car would be the centerpiece of any fine automobile collection.***I am listing this car for a friend.
