Outstanding vintage camper top! 390 C.I.D. Engine C6 Heavy Duty Automatic Transmission Power Steering Power Disc Brakes 3.54 Dana 60 Traction-Lock Differential Deluxe Ranger Package "Select-Aire" Air Conditioning Optional Gauge Package Dual Fuel Tanks Side Toolbox Side Mirrors Wiper Washers Firestone "Wide Oval" Tires (Originally) Other options; notes: Outstanding 1968-69 Camper Top! (PPG glass is dated December 1968 and January 1969) Dual Magnaflow exhaust mufflers and exhaust tips. Accessory Styled Engine Oil Cooler Power Steering Cooler Aftermarket Transmission Cooler Original Firestone Wide-Oval Spare Tire never on the ground! This Camper Special was built at the San Jose, CA plant in May 1968 and spent the majority of its life in Southern California, and the Nevada desert before coming to Texas. Dry arrow straight body. This truck was ordered with all the right options - power steering, front power disc brakes, air conditioning, deluxe Ranger luxury package, dual tanks, side toolbox, side mirrors, optional gauge package, 390 c.i.d. engine, C6 automatic transmission, and the most highway friendly Dana 60 traction-lock rear differential gear ratio available of 3.54 to 1. This ratio will tow any trailer or boat with ease while getting decent mileage. It tows with firmness and control. The front power disc brakes are massive - and work absolutely excellent. The previous owner had mentioned he serviced the front suspension, steering, brakes, radiator, heads, exhaust, etc. and it drives like it. The original rear axle tag is there along with a still visible "X" mark made by the assembly line. There is also the assembly line sequence number still visible on the firewall. The original spare tire is still there and has never been on the ground. White markings on the tread and the "OK" stamp by the assembly line is faintly visible. A 16.5" x 7" Firestone "Wide Oval". I don't know if the "Wide Oval" was an upgrade option or not. This does indicate that is what originally came on this truck at least. The original owners manual with selling dealer and purchaser are on the inside cover. The odometer shows 89K miles. The truck has a clear Texas title. The camper top is also period correct and in amazing condition. The top was in dry storage for over twenty years. It is a rare find. The PPG glass is dated December 1968 - January 1969. **Although I have not ordered a K. Marti report, I believe that this truck indeed was a special order; mainly from the fact of the documentation in the original owners manual of the selling date (5/16/68) and the engine assembly date stamped into the engine block (5/16/68) - the dates are coincidentally on the same day. (The San Jose plant may have been fast - but I don't think they were that fast). This particular vehicle V.I.N. was purchased in Wilmington, CA. while the engine that was installed in this V.I.N. was assembled on the same day at the Ford Plant in San Jose, CA.; therefore the vehicle (and it's engine) could not be in two places at one time. Unfortunately I have not found a build sheet and do not have the original selling invoice. The AM/FM radio stereo in the dash is one I have had from a 1968 - 1969 Torino and I believe is cosmetically correct for a truck option. It does not go with the vehicle but if bidding goes well I will consider to let it go with the truck. (No guarantees on it working. I just put it in there for looks. Last time I bench tested it, it worked). There was an aftermarket radio in it when I bought the truck. The bezel or metal dash was not cut. Engine bay needs restoring, but I believe it is all there except for the windshield washer bottle. Bed needs restoring, a drop in liner, or rhino-lined. The upper lip is completely painted aqua. This is where I stopped until a decision was to be made on whether to paint it or rhino-line it. The bed is very straight, I could only find one small shallow ding. The wheel wells have no dents either. The engine oil cooler looks like one from the Accessories Brochure. (The block adapter looks aftermarket. I would think Ford would possibly have used the Shelby S8MS part numbered type block adapter. The picture below is from a 1970 Ford Accessories brochure and the text has a C9AZ (1969) part number and listed as a transmission cooler, which is the closest thing I could find looking like it. Original Firestone "Wide Oval" Spare with factory markings. The factory inspection "OK" stamp is faintly visible on the sidewall. It appears the tire has never been on the ground. Nibs can still be seen on the sidewall. Lastly, if it would matter.. Steve McQueen owned a 1968 Camper Special.. Steve McQueen owned a 1968 Ford Camper Special that he kept at his ranch. His was white bottom half, and what appears to possibly be a "Brittany Blue" or Winter Blue top half (I think the picture was black and white), which also was painted over an originally all white vehicle. The clue that it was painted over an all Wimbledon White color is the front hood edge section - it is Wimbledon white and not blue while the rest of the hood is blue. His also has almost the same exact type of camper top on the back. His Camper Special had Perlux fog lights in the front bumper and had a factory Ford accessory spotlight mounted on top of the cab. You can find this picture in a great book "McQueen's Machines" about Steve McQueen and all of his vehicles at some of your larger chain bookstores. CONDITION PAINT: I have used this truck as a daily driver. It has had a recent repaint which still needs to be finished (door jambs and interior). Paint job is currently a twenty footer daily driver. Assume the pictures look better than it is. There is one long run in the aqua on the passenger side bed. I will try to wet sand it away and buff it by auction end, but no guarantees. A complete wet sand and buff should make the paint job acceptable for weekend cruise nights. If you are expecting a show quality paint job, you will be disappointed. If you "sight" down the body you will notice some slight "ripples" and imperfections. This was not a ten thousand dollar perfected better-than-original-multiple-guide-coat-sanded-before-color-coat paint job. If I put a show paint job on this truck I would not have been able to drive it. This truck was originally all Wimbledon White. The 1968-69 Ford Reef Aqua was added. All exterior trim was removed but the door jambs and inner door frames have not been done. There is enough Wimbledon White paint left to bring the truck back to all Wimbledon White. There is enough Reef Aqua for touch up, a panel or two, or to do the interior. The bed still needs paint, a plastic liner, or rhino lined. There is a small ding in the hood, and a shallow "impression" on the spear where probably in the past people have used to push down on to close the hood. These spots are not obvious, and not noticed unless you look for them. There are a few nicks in the paint on the driver door. DRIVETRAIN: This engine has no blow-by". That is a generally good indicator that there are no worn piston rings or valve guides. The transmission works great, the brakes are excellent, power steering works fine, and the tires are good. I rebuilt the carburetor and replaced the fuel pump with the correct large cannister type (not the cheap passenger car type). BODY: The beltline trim is missing on the driver side bed. The rocker trim is missing on the toolbox door. There is a ding in an otherwise perfect horn ring on the steering wheel. There was an electrical short in the past. I individually wrapped then grouped wrapped all alternator harness and related wires. I had to wrap the black-green stripe primary accessory power wire all the way to the ignition switch and fuse box. If I didn't tell you this you probably would not even have noticed it, as the harnesses are black tape wrapped from the factory. All lights, blinkers, wipers, flashers, dual tank switch/fuel gauge and even the cigarette lighter works. A/C works, it doesn't blow absolute ice cubes but it will keep you under the sweat level even in Texas summer heat. Both dual tanks work, but the auxillary tank needs flushing out. Rear bumper has a slight dent. I believe the truck originally had a rear step bumper but I never got around to getting one. SUSPENSION/STEERING: I have pulled a two axle trailer with a deep V offshore hull boat with this truck. The springs do not sag (and does not sag with the boat load - the truck and trailer are on even keel), and the ride and drive is firm. When towing you realize the noticeable difference between a 1/2 ton truck versus a 3/4 ton. This F250 flexes its muscles under a load and handles it with a confident feel of control without any overwhelming stress or strain. There is no comparison to a F150. (After owning a F250 I doubt I will ever own another F150. This truck's feel of confidence, strength and control under load has spoiled me). An F250 is a "real" truck. I AM A SAAC MEMBER AND PROBABLY VIEW VEHICLES MORE CRITICALLY THAN MOST. MY PAST FEEDBACK SHOWS ACCURATE DESCRIPTIONS. I HAVE TRIED TO GIVE AN ACCURATE DESCRIPTION.
