Vehicle Detail
1974 BMW 2002 Turbo VIN 4290089 Very correct and original factory 2002 Turbo with electric sunroof, 4 speed transmission, limited slip differential and original black interior rare Alpina wheels. I purchased this car a few years ago in Japan and had it imported into the US. The car has a Clear South Carolina Title with no liens. This car shows 25,563 Kilometers on the odometer. I do not know the actual miles, however the odometer was working properly when I purchased the car and it has always worked properly since I have owner her. The overall condition of the interior and the chassis suggests that the car has very low total miles on her from new. This car runs well, does not have any issues and can be enjoyed as is. The paint is overall very good, but not perfect as it has a few nicks here and there. You will not be disappointed. The correct and original 2002 Turbo interior is in excellent condition (seats, and carpets). The electric sunroof does not work, The switch was broken when I purchased the car and I did not get around to fixing this. No editorial on my part. The new owner can have this repaired. Since I have owned the car, I have: - Installed a large aluminum cored radiator built by Ray Korman (using original BMW 2002 Turbo top and bottom radiator tanks), the car will not run hot! - Replaced all cooling system hoses with new BMW hoses - Installed NEW front BMW Black Grills (left & right) and the center grill - Installed NEW front headlights and rear turn signal lenses - Replaced the engine and tranny mounts with NEW BMW 2002 Turbo mounts - Replaced the water pump and the red cooling fan w/ NEW 2002 Turbo parts The car is fitted with very rare Alpina 15” x 8” (rear) and 15” x 7” (Front) wheels. The tires are Bridgestones (205 50 on the Front and 205 55 on the Rear. They are in very good condition. The attached image of the recent BMW M3 advertisement has this car in the photo. A local BMW dealer asked to use my 2002 Turbo for a display at the 2009 Hilton Head Concours and then for this advertisement. She is very rare and you have wanted one for a while, this is your chance to get a very nice 2002 Turbo at a fair price. The car is located near Hilton Head, South Carolina. If you are interested to buy the car and want to discuss, please call me at 843 639-9393 (8am – 9pm). Deposit of $1000 due w/in 48 hours of the auction end. The full balance is due w/in 5 business days of the auction end. Seller will sell to international buyers. Please contact me in advance of the auction end to discuss export shipping and payment for the vehicle. A bit of information on the 2002 Turbo: The 2002 Turbo was introduced at the 1973 Frankfurt Auto Show. Production stopped in July 1975. Between July 1973 and July 1975, only 1,672 models were built. Only 18 were sold in Holland and only 1 in the USA. The distinguishing feature of the Turbo was the Kuhnle, Kopp & Kausch turbocharger. It was mounted low on the right front of the engine and air was fed to it through a tube. The holes in the front spoiler are for cooling. The large center opening is for the oil cooler, while the smaller one to the right is used for the tube that feeds cool air directly onto the turbo itself. The 2002 Turbo can do 0-60 in 6.9 seconds with a top speed of 130 mph. The turbocharger kicks in at about 3500-4000 rpm. The 2002 Turbo produced 170 hp at 5800 rpm. The Turbo had heavy-duty clutch, a 40% limited slip differential, and 10" vented rotors for the front brakes. A Getrag close ratio 5-speed gearbox was optional. Heavy-duty shocks were fitted, along with standard 13-inch two-tone steel wheels, the same as 320i wheels. 6" wide "turbo style" alloys were optional A red plastic panel highlights the instrument cluster, which contains a clock and a boost gauge. There is no oil pressure or oil temperature gauge. The boost gauge has a white zone (no boost), a green zone (the boost is On), and a red zone (too much boost). Black sport seats and a sport steering wheel were standard. Most 2002 options were either standard or available, including cloth seats and a sunroof. Air-conditioning was not an option because there was no room for the condenser. The exhaust pipe from the turbo to the center muffler is 2 l/2" in diameter, and the center muffler and rear muffler are fed by 2" pipes. At VIN 4291212 the outlet for the rear muffler was changed to exit at the center. As one might expect, the exhaust system parts are expensive. Most of the 2002 Turbos were made in two colours, 1049 cars are made in Chamonix white and 615 cars are made in Polaris silver. On Jul-12-10 at 15:42:06 PDT, seller added the following information: The images did not upload to EBAY properly. I have attached several additional images that I took this evening to the web site: http://1974bmw2002turbo.shutterfly.com/ Let me know if you have any issues seeing these images. On Jul-17-10 at 05:30:42 PDT, seller added the following information: I wanted to add a few comments based on questions that I have received re: shipping and/or exporting the Turbo to other countries: - NO issue at all in assisting a buyer in exporting the car. - The car is secured now in my garage, it does not have to be "moved" quickly - you have time to get shipping quotes (I have worked with a very capable export company here in the US and I can assist you in getting quotes in a couple of days. - I "guesstimate" the shipping cost to Europe will be around $1,900 US (this should includes, document fees, inland transport in the US, customs broker fees, ocean transport fees,....). - NO issue at all in loading the car into an ocean container. I have done this for friends in Germany, Switzerland, Australia, Sweden..... over the years. You do not just drive the car into the container and close the doors. The car must be "tied down" (ie: secured into the container with heavy straps to the suspension so that it is safe from mishaps during shipping). YES, this car is a candidate for RO-RO (roll on - roll off) shipping. This type of transport is 1/2 of the cost vs. shipping in a container. You must understand that the car does NOT need body work and paint now and that it's interior, gauges, radio (although it is a later CD player) is all intact - the issue folks have w/ RO-RO is that dings happen and small items seem to disappear sometimes. YES, I will ship the tool kit, papers, small spare parts to the buyer separately via express shipping (for safety). On Aug-02-10 at 06:48:37 PDT, seller added the following information: Due to many questions, I have posted additional images on the web link provided above:- the sunroof is original and YES it is the factory sunroof- I had the the engine compartment, underside of the front hood and spare tire well / trunk area cleaned when I acquired the car. There is NO rust in these areas and NEVER was. There is a very slight amount of overspray around the front strut boots.... you can have this cleaned very easily. The spare tire well is original and VERY solid. The front fenders are solid and very nice. - this car was not and is not a rust bucket like many of the 2002s- the vin stamp in the front cowl area (in front of the passenger area) is correct, original and has never been tampered with.- When I purchased the car, I found and installed a new correct, original BMW 2002 vin plate as the original was made w/ black ?painted areas and it had faded badly. I DO HAVE THE ORIGINAL WITH THE CAR"S PAPERS.- The decal set in the front engine compartment is new and very nice- in the last 2 weeks I have had: - the drive shaft guibo replaced - turn signals repaired - wiper motor repaired - small paint bubbling area where the front fenders meet the front nose section repaired - Oil line replaced - engine cleaned - ...... total for all work was over $2k- I had a pre-purchase inspection done by a local BMW repair shop for a potential buyer. He did not purchase the car and he decided that my car is basically the same as a 2002 (non-sunroof) car he already owns. I will link the winning bidder w/ the owner of the local BMW repair shop to discuss the PPO. Bid w/ confidence as the car is in great condition!
