Vehicle Detail

Up for sale is my son's daily driver, 1972 MGB. First and foremost I’d like to say that he has been using this as a daily driver to run errands between Buffalo, Syracuse and Rochester for the last 2 months and has put 4500 miles on it since he purchased it. He purchased the car two months ago and did a substantial amount of work to assure it was running nicely. We set the engine timing, set the valve clearances, installed a new gas tank, replaced the fuel pump, installed a new thermostat (car runs very cool even on very warm days, stuck in traffic), installed a new fuel sender unit and the car has very recently had front suspension work done and a new top installed. Prior to getting the car someone did a Holley carb conversion. The carb is nicely tuned and the car idles very well. It always starts right up without any serious hesitation despite the choke not being attached. The good: The car drives very well, steering is excellent, tires are excellent, carb runs well, suspension is good, exhaust is excellent, the car doesn’t misfire and is running on all 4 cylinders. There are also no fuel leaks (the tops of MG gas tanks collect water and frequently rust out!) and ALL gages work, fuel, temp, oil pressure (oil pressure is excellent!), speedometer and tach. There is also excellent compression in all of the cylinders. We also installed a 1972 grille and replaced it with an older 60’s style grille – paid big bucks for the new one! The window winders work properly. The bad: The car has typical rust. The body looks OK but the rear quarter panels have one or two holes rusted through to the trunk. The underbody isn’t great. The inner rocker panels have a lot of rust should definitely be replaced if someone wants to keep this car for the long haul. The floor support under the seats is rusty as well. The car is still very tight but within a few years should definitely have some serious rust repair done if you’d like to keep it on the road. There is a typical crack in the driver's door next to the mirror and I have a very good rust free replacement door from a coupe that can be used. The window frame from the roadster door can be installed in the coupe door in order for it to fit properly. The car also leaks and burns oil. Going over 60mph you can actually see and smell burning oil coming from the engine compartment. He would always drive around 50-55mph to avoid this. Lower than these speeds, its undetectable but if you drive it 70-80 it's definitely present! He was going through a quart of oil every 150 miles when he was driving it regularly. Recently the clutch has started acting up as well. It doesn't slip at all but it engages when the pedal is too low to the floor. To get into first or reverse it is necessary to push the pedal almost all the way down. The interior is fair but original. The dash is good but with 3 rips and the seats both need to be re-stitched. We can provide seat covers for the car if you’d like but they are not original MG. The rear carpet has been replaced as well, behind the seats but with the wrong material. The top is good but has two small rips near the rear side windows from being closed improperly. The paint is definitely poor – it has scratches and chips as you can see in the pictures. There are lots of spare parts including a complete set of SU carbs with original manifold, heat shield and air cleaners if the buyer would like to buy them – we will sell them at a very reasonable price. Basically this is an MG that you can get in and drive away as is. It is currently on the road and NYS inspected. All the instruments work, lights work, horn works, heater blower works, and interior light works. This is a great opportunity to get a running MG at a VERY low price that is a delight to drive. No surprises here, everything known about this car has been disclosed. We decided to spend the big bucks and get a rust free MG that has actually required a lot more work that this one. If you have any questions at all please feel free to call at 585-354-1631 or setup a time to test drive it. We have a clean current transferable registration. We can assist with delivery within 100 miles or so. THIS IS A NO RESERVE AUCTION. $200 or 10% deposit paid with Paypal required within 48 hours of auction end, whichever is greater. Balance due within 7 days, paid in cash only. No checks, cashier checks, money orders, etc. Buyer must appear in person to pick up car, or other arrangements can be made based upon discussion.
