Vehicle Detail

* * * 1966 Ford Country Sedan * * * 75K original miles Original paint Excellent driver Up for bids is this 1966 Ford Country Sedan station wagon in super condition.  Of all the "survivor" cars that I've bought and sold, this wagon ranks among the top.  The level of originality and preservation is simply incredible.  I actually brought this car into my inventory last February but it's been such a great car to have around that I've been reluctant to sell it.  Along the way I've logged about 2000 trouble free miles in it, I've nicknamed it Ol' Reliable.  I recently took it on a 400 mile day trip with 5 passengers and the car didn't miss a beat.  If you're on the East Coast and looking for a fun summer road trip, this is your car, you can fly in and drive it home, it's that reliable.  This wagon always starts right away, runs terrific, is comfortable, and of course has loads of room. The car was originally sold new in Rochester, MN and then made its way to California.  Always garaged, the car is like stepping back in time.  Aside from the original paint, it also has all original weatherstripping, glass, trim work, and interior - all in excellent shape.  Take a look at the photos, I think you'll agree that this may be the ultimate time warp wagon.  A slideshow of all the enlarged images is available at the bottom of the page. Painted in "Medium Sage Metallic", this wagon has a classic 60s look.  For original paint, it's held up incredibly well, still with good finish and shine.  I've gone to look at cars that were represented as having original paint and they were not, you can rest assured I know what I'm looking at and can confidently state that this is indeed original.   It's pretty cool to view a car with 44 year old factory paint, there's nothing to hide, what you see if what you get.  No masking marks, no sanding scratches beneath the paint, no layers of bondo hidden below.  The trade off is that you'll find a fair amount of little dings and chips from its 44 years of use.  Nothing too extreme though, probably the car's biggest flaw is a ding on the tailgate, visible in the 2nd photo below.  My PDR (paintless dent removal) guy said it would be an easy fix but we never got around to doing it.  The overall impression of the car is very strong, these little flaws just add a little patina to the car's survivor status.  The car is also exceedingly solid, there's no bubbling to be found, none.  The bottom of the spare tire well shows a small area with corrosion, otherwise you'll find no rust issues anywhere on this car.  Wheels are American Racing Torque Thrusts on BFG Radial T/As showing lots of tread. The bumpers have never been redone, they're still in great shape for their age with no dents or dings.  The chrome work is great with no pitting or hazing.  All of the stainless trim on the car is also very well preserved.   All lights and signals operate correctly, tail light lenses are like new. All of the glass are the original factory Car-Lite pieces, all still in great shape, even the windshield.  I've had this car in the rain enough times to tell you that it's completely watertight, you won't be chasing down water leaks in this car.  The factory roof rack shows some delamination of the wood sticker on the left rail, otherwise it's looking good after 44 years. The story of this car can by told be looking at the door jambs.  This is a car that has been garaged and babied from new. The interior continues the survivor theme, it's all original and has held up beautifully. Seats, door panels, windlace, hardware - all in excellent condition. Perfect steeing wheel with no cracks or spidering.  Working clock and radio.  Effective heater and fan.  Functional AC that blows cold.  Working CB radio.  One thing you'll find about this wagon is that everything works just as it should.  There are no gremlins or glitches, not always the case with old cars. Underdash area is clean and correct.  Details are what make the difference between a good car and a great car, and this one can handle close scrutiny. Nice dash pad with no cracks or splits, even on the speaker grill.  Headliner is exceptional from front to back.  Full assortment of original documents, along with the car's first issue license plate. This wagon offers huge amounts of cargo space, in addition there's a locking storage bin underneath. '66 was the first year for the "Magic Tailgate", which either folds down or opens horizontally to the left.  The door's window is power and works smoothly.  The door bottom is rust free, as shown in the 2nd photo.  The 3rd photo shows the tailgate seam with the door opened horizontally.  Ever seen this area on a wagon look so good? Some cars look good and some cars drive good, this one does both.  The car is just a treat to drive, it has lots of power, has a comfortable ride, brakes well, and the power steering means you can pilot this land yacht with one finger.  The car has an all new exhaust from the manifolds back, along with new manifold gaskets.  Combined with the smooth running 352 motor, the exhaust has a nice subdued rumble to it.  There's been recent work done to bushings, power steering, and u-joints too, the car is dialed in.  I do let the car warm up for 20 seconds, as it tends to be cold blooded, but that's really the only thing I can find to pick on.  The back cargo area can make creaky sounds at times but it's never bothered me much.  I can guarantee that you'll appreciate the way this car operates - to drive it is to love it. The undercarriage is solid and original.  Areas where the undercoating has flaked off reveal bare steel that looks like new.  The pans and frame show no areas of patching or repair, just an incredible representation of what a well cared for, low mile car should look like.
