Vehicle Detail

This 1966 MGB was last inspected in the State of Missouri in April of 1980. It was found last month sitting in a basement of a house in the northern part of Kansas City. This car is a time capsule. An original example that just oozes what MG was all about. Sit in it and drive it down the road, feel the sports car like the 60's intended them to be. Such a rare find in this condition that it is worth noting all I can tell you about it. Believed to be a one family owner car. Originally purchased from Orange Motors in Miami, FL by Jack D. Wright on 12/6/65 according to the original dealer metal warranty plate that is tucked into the factory supplied owners manual clear folder with the MG logo on it. His daughter Claudia, purchased or was given the car prior to 1975 and was the owner until her recent passing. The Passport to Service manual is located in the same folder as the owners manual. This manual verifies that this is a numbers matching car with the VIN of GHN3L/70460 and engine ID numbers, 18GB-U-H 22727, which match the plates are on the car. The triple fold out page for MGB accessories and an application for overseas membership to the MG owners club are also located in the same folder, all of which are in the glove box. So, once the car was removed from the basement, it was brought over here and checked out. It was still equipped with the dual Lucas 6 volt batteries. If you continue reading below, I have detailed everything a buyer would need to know about the purchase of a car. If I can do it like this, why don't you ask other sellers to tell you in this detail about any other car you may be purchasing online. VEHICLE CONDITION BODY: If you look at the body closely, you will see that this MGB has some of the usual rust associated with this car. I have provided photos so that you can get the general idea. Solid unibody, solid jack points, solid spring mounts. Never any curb damage under the front valance area of the car. At one time, some damage was done to the bonnet and the right front fender but it was high enough that there was no inner fender damage or front radiator damage. It was very superficial in nature but at that time, some spot paint work was done and you can tell by the paint difference on the front. The car still has the original aluminum bonnet. NO other known or discovered accident damage to this car. The entire car had been repainted at some time in its life. There is a crack in both door skins at the wing vent window, typical for MGBs. Rocker rust is present on both sides. There is rust through on the front portion of the floor pans. This car is very straight with great body lines. MECHANICAL: From what we could tell, the car was placed into storage due to bad clutch hydraulics. The engine oil filter and oil was changed with Castrol GTX 20W50, the oil I use in every old British car I ever get. The radiator was flushed and antifreeze changed. I did not change the hoses. The plugs, points, and condenser were changed. The engine was turned over until oil pressure was built up and then it was started. Fuel was added after we got the original SU fuel pump going. A leak was discovered in the bottom of the fuel tank so a temporary fuel tank is being used at this time with a fuel line going to the inlet of the pump. Once we got the engine started, it had 65 pounds oil pressure. No smoke to speak of and no funny noises. Once it was warmed up a compression test was done on all 4 cylinders with the following results, 1) 95 to 100, 2) 110, 3) 105, 4) 110. Since the engine proved to be in great shape, I replaced all clutch hydraulics. New master, slave, and hose on the clutch hydraulics. The clutch works fine. Believe it or not, other that freeing up the park brake mechanism on the rear differential, the brakes are in working condition. The car was now driveable. I took it out and drove it down the road, checking other things out at the same time. I noticed the second gear synchronizer was starting to get a little weak but the car shifted fine, it only had a minor grind going into second. An inspection of the suspension revealed that the front tie rod ends are shot but there was a new pair in the trunk, ready to be installed and purchased by the past owner. Front bushings are also in need of replacement, just like all MGBs. The car will also need a new exhaust system from the Y pipe back to the rear of the car, it needs it all. I have purchased a new battery for the car but short of cutting the battery trays to hold it, it sticks up above the top of the battery compartment and I refuse to alter this car in any was from original. The tachometer works some of the time. The generator works some of the time. The AM radio comes on but nothing out the speakers. This car is still positive ground and has never been altered or converted from that. Lights are in working condition. Wipers not working for some reason. Speedometer is not functioning and hasn't been for some time so actual miles are unknown. Tires are over 30 years old and you really need to replace them since they are flat on one side anyway. INTERIOR: Original. Still has the black leather seats with red piping, showing wear since they are 44 years old. It still has the original door and interior panels. It still has the original carpet. Yes, it is all useable but could stand to be replaced on the restoration. Dash is intact and no extra holes in it. Safety gauge in proper working condition. TOP, TONNEAU, BOOT: It needs a top. I believe it has the later style top frame installed in the car that stays in the cockpit and not removable to the trunk. The tonneau cover was on the car when I brought it back here. It is original and showing some age but still useable. The boot cover was still in the factory supplied bag and stowed in the trunk. Here is the funny part of all of this. I have been a committee member and former chairman of the Heartland MG Regional car show held here in the KC area every year. This years show was this last Saturday, June 12th. A threat of rain held the car count down to 83 on site when a downpour of 2.5 inches of rain fell in about 3 hours. However, during one of the pauses in sprinkles, I noticed there wasn't any car showing up in the 62 to 67 MGB class. So, me and old red here proceeded to enter the show, park among the show cars, and take home first place. Yep, got a trophy. Nope, it stays with me. Whew! I think I covered pretty much all of it. So in summary, a car hard to find in this condition with this history. Fix some of the mechanical items and drive it this summer. Restore it this winter if you choose to or continue to drive it the way it is. It is only this original once. I want to be clear about this next statement. This car is being sold with a bill of sale only. This car was purchased out of the estate of the previous owner and the title could not be located.
