Vehicle Detail
* * * 1941 Cadillac Series 62 Coupe * * * CCCA Full Classic CARavan participant Beautiful, reliable example Up for bids is this fantastic Cadillac, a 1941 Series 62 Coupe. Relatively rare, just 1,985 Model 6227 Coupes were produced for 1941, the last full year of production before Cadillac assembly lines joined the war effort. This car was sold new by Don Lee Motors in Los Angeles, it has primarily stayed in the Western US, with ownership in CA, WA, and Oregon. Ownership of the car can be traced back to the 1980s, when it was owned by a former President of the Cadillac/LaSalle club. 1941 Cadillacs are acknowledged as Full Classics by the CCCA, this particular car was eligible and took part in a multiple club tours across the country, known as a CCCA CARavans. The car remains to this day a reliable, stately classic that can be comfortably and reliably toured with, regardless of distance. The car has been repainted in its original color of "Dusty Gray", which for a gray isn't neutral at all. Depending on the light the car can at times look taupe under sunlight or take on more of a green hue under shade conditions. It is a complex color that suits this car very well. The paint is lacquer and if you get right up to it you can see some of the flaws that aged lacquer brings. There are areas with pimpling and crazing, not to severe levels but obviously worth mentioning. Overall the car presents very well, these paint flaws are more of something a concours judge would pick up on, for most folks they're not readily noticed. The paint application was done to a high standard, there is no overspray or orange peel, it was a quality job. The body panels on this Cadillac are straight and true, panel fit is excellent as well. There are no issues with rust on this car, no bubbling and no areas showing previous repair. The undercarriage (pictured further below) is likewise solid. The trim work on the car is all in very nice condition. Bumpers are straight and clean with no dings or pitting. The grill has also been rechromed, it has a few minor flaws but overall is impressive. Side spears and taillight surrounds are in great shape, all lights and signals work correctly. Below you can see the complexity of "Dusty Gray". In direct sunlight the color leans more towards taupe, as seen in the first photo. The majority of the other photos pictured here were taken under cloudy conditions, which brings out more of a greenish hue in the paint. All of the glass is clean and clear, the 2 front side windows each have a thin vertical scratch up near the wing window, otherwise the glass is really great. Trunk compartment contains a matching spare and original jacking equipment. The car features a beautiful interior with excellent fit and finish. It has all new carpet, headliner, door panels, leather upholstery, and high quality woodgraining. The leather seats are extremely comfortable and add a nice aroma to the interior. Dashboard is excellent, all gauges operate perfectly except for the clock. The woodgraining you see in the photos is becoming a lost art, this was obviously done by a master. The radio is pre-set with Los Angeles area radio stations, it powers on but doesn't tune. Some of these stations were actually owned by Don Lee (!) The wool broadcloth headliner and door panels have been expertly installed. More woodgraining on the window surrounds, all excellent. The steering wheel shows a couple of cracks at 9 and 3. Heater and fan work effectively. Rear seat heating vents are in good shape. Underdash area is clean and uncluttered. Rear seat shows almost no use. Doors close precisely, windows wind smoothly. Vacumn wipers work well. The car has all new weatherstripping. I guarantee that you will be impressed with the way this car runs and drives. The 346 V-8 runs beautifully and produces ample power. Starts readily and has a near silent idle. The motor doesn't smoke and is not a leaker. The car is more than adequate for freeway driving, it cruises at 70 with power to spare. Around town the car has lots of low end torque, it never seems taxed or stressed, it drives with authority. Another impressive mechanical aspect of this Cadillac is the way it shifts. This has to be the smoothest column shift car I've ever driven, it's just perfect. The car has a nice tight feel driving down the road, a bank vault feel, devoid of squeaks or rattles. The car brakes well and has a good, tight suspension. The driving experience in this car is first rate. The car has a few subtle mods. A relay has been added for the brake light switch, a common weak spot on these cars. The relay insures a long life for the switch. Under the dash inside is a toggle for an electric fuel pump, this allows for instant starts after the car has been sitting for days or weeks. Lastly, there is a master cut off switch for the electrical system mounted under the dash, a prudent option for long term storage. Although the car has never been off the frame, the undercarriage shows attention to detail. Things like bushings, brake lines and lube fittings all reflect recent care, this is a car that has been kept up. It does show dirt and grime from driving nearly cross country but it looks like it could easily be detailed if desired. The undercarriage also reflects its California roots - no rust and no history of patch work or repair. The build quality of these cars have earned them a distinction all their own. The motto of Cadillac as "The Standard of the World" bears witness to the quality of these milestone automobiles. Click here for a slideshow of all of the enlarged images.
