Vehicle Detail

This auction is for my 1949 (title in 1950) Chevy 1/2 ton Step-side Pickup. It runs great, drives great and looks great. It has been sitting in my garage for far too many years. It has a Oldsmobile 425 Super Rocket V8 Engine, Turbo 400 Switch-pitch Transmission, 9" Ford Rear End, and Dana 44 Front End with Disc Brakes. I drove it for about 9 months after it was built, and it has been in the garage ever since, over 20 years. I have lots of large close-up photos on my web page. Please see: http://yotasandjeeps.com/49chevy/index.htm Below I have listed what has been done to the truck and below that an explanation of why I did what I did.Motor: 1967 Oldsmobile 425 Super Rocket "Ultrahigh Compression, Premium Fuel Only", V8. Transmission: Turbo 400 Switch-Pitch. Ralph's-Built race tranny. (Shifts great!) Transmission Cooler: Large Custom (13.25" X 10.5" X 3.5") Transfercase: Dana 20 (gear-drive) Front End: Dana 44, with 3.55 Ratio, Disc Brakes, Warn Lock-O-Matic Hubs. Front Springs: Custom Double-wrap, stiff front half, long, soft rear half, to match rear springs. Rear End: 9" Ford, 3.55 Ratio. Rear Springs: Late 60's Mopar High Performance "B" Body springs. Brakes: Disc Front, Drum Rear, Power Assist Brakes. Gauges: 1949 2 1/2 ton Chevy Truck Clusters. (oil pressure gauge to 60 psi, Water temp has numbers not "H" and "C"). Gauges work including speedometer. Steering Column: 1970 Cadillac Eldorado. Tilt and Telescoping. Steering box: Saginaw Power Steering. Cooling: Radiator mounted in cage in bed. Angled same angle as Mid '70s Corvette, with one electric fan under, and two electric fans over. Draws air from under pickup. Radiator: 4 Core, tall model, (like '77 Chevy 1 ton pickups) Wheels: 8 1/2 X 15" 5 slot Mag style, Aluminum. Bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2", front and rear. Tires: 33" X 12.50" X 15" The reason I did what I did: I started with a stock frame. I choose the 5 widow cab and not the 7 window because my Dad had a 7 window and said the tires threw rocks that come in the window and hit the corner windows. With my bigger lugged tires I was afraid it might break the windows. The 425 cubic inch Oldsmobile Super Rocket motor is light for a big block. If it had an aluminum intake it would be close to the weight of a small black Chevy and it has real good torque 500 foot pounds and HP 400. Its rods are long and the crank is forged in this motor and will take 6500 RPM. The transmission was, at that time, one of the "Strong" and "Cool" ones being a Turbo 400 with a Switch Pitch Torque Converter. Switched to "low-stall" it stalls around 1500 RPM, switched to high-stall it stalls around 2100 RPM. Maximum engine torque is at 2300 RPM. So they work well together. The transfer case is a Dana 20. They are a good strong gear drive case. The Rear End is a 9 inch Ford, witch had the strength and width I wanted. The Front End is a Dana 44 with disk brakes and Warn Lock-O-Matic Hubs. The hubs work like automatic hubs and like the more positive lock of a manual hub, when you lock them in. The cooling system: I had a hard time cooling it with a radiator in front, so I decided to put the radiator in the bed. I could then have a much larger radiator and also take advantage of the low pressure zone behind the cab. This way the natural air flow is from underneath the truck through the radiator and out behind the cab, like Grand National trucks and many off road racers do. The rear springs are excellent for a good ride and no wheel hop, because the front half of the springs are short and stiff and the rear half are long and soft making spring rap minimal, thus no wheel hop. The front springs I had custom made with the same idea as the rear, double rap stiff front half and long soft rear half. Some of the smaller custom things: The heater motor speed is totally variable, like a volume control. The radio is a Blaupunkt AM FM Cassette that has been modified to fit the stock Chevy radio's mounting holes. It has interior lights under the dash that point on the floor and come on when the doors are opened and when you rotate the Head Light switch, which also controls the instrument cluster lights brightness. The list goes on and on.
