Vehicle Detail

Best of Both Worlds: 1977 Porsche 911S Carrera 3.2! Ask any man or boy what kind of sports cars they'd love to own, and don't be surprised to hear "Porsche" over and over again. No other car is as easily recognizable as Professor Porsche's Autobahn Stormer, and no other sports car has been in production as long as the Nine-Eleven: 45 years and counting! Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Especially the 911 "S" and the 911 "Carrera" models have a special place in the hearts of the Porsche cognoscenti. In the early days, the "S" always was the most powerful Porsche, until the "Carrera" came along in 1973. With '73 Ducktail Carreras being prized collectibles worth a Quarter of a Million Dollars and up, their 1974-1977 brethren are about to follow suit, becoming ever more desirable as time passes on. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Alas, when it comes to the pure joy of driving, don't you wonder what it would be like to have an early Porsche 911S or Carrera that's powered by the finest air cooled engine ever to leave the Zuffenhausen factory? Luckily, we're about to find out, right now! Click on any of the above images for a full-size view The 1977 Porsche presented here, VIN *9117200920* is a genuine 911S model, born in Germany and raised in the Golden State, where it spent the last 33 years, becoming the recipient of a thorough mechanical and cosmetic makeover in 1994, including the drivetrain from a 1986 Carrera. Externally, the car may look like one of the 1,473 Porsche Carrera Coupés manufactured in 1977; underneath the beautiful skin lurks a well-mannered beast, ready to prowl upon demand. Already cherished: the California blue-and-gold license plate, beautiful to behold, and testimony to a life well lived in sunny California. Close to $10,000.00 was spent during the past 9 months on meaningful cosmetic and mechanical work, registration is paid for 'til December 2010, and the car needs absolutely nothing to be instantly enjoyed. Well, let's now inspect this remarkable Porsche in more detail, starting with the trunk. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Clean, original trunk carpeting and factory tool roll create a positive first impression. Yes, the trunk light works! Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Removing the gray felt, we are amazed by the showroom-like tidyness of this 33 year-old Porsche. Note original, dated-coded, inflatable spare. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) The vulnerable "nose" section: there is no damage to be found. This 911 has always been pampered and garaged by its second, adult owner of the past 16 years, and it clearly shows. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) We think this 911 possesses just the right stance; its presence is stunning. Coachwork, with its steel flared Carrera fenders, correct for the 1977 model, is smooth and free of any disturbance. Shut lines of doors and hoods are perfect. We love the contrasting black "Carrera" script--called Donauwellen in Germany--on the Porsche's flanks! Click on any of the above images for a full-size view Chromed-and-painted 16" FUCHS wide alloy wheels are in-your-face attractive and wonderfully complement this particular car. We splurged and had a set of four brand new high performance tires of the correct sizes, 205/55/R16 up front, 225/50/ZR16 out back, installed just last week. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) The most desirable option on any early Porsche Coupé must be the electric sunroof. This one works perfectly; note the freshly installed sunroof seals. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) The car was recently re-sprayed in Porsche's Guards Red (factory code 027) and shows superbly. All windows were taken out prior to painting; the weatherstripping was replaced as needed. There are no dings, dents, scratches, bubbles, rock chips, or other imperfections to note; the finish is smooth and very glossy. All lenses, including the expensive original BOSCH rear reflector bar, are immaculate. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Correct, white perforated headliner was also just replaced--not a cheap endeavor! Yes, both interior lights work. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Continuing our inspection of the cockpit, we are fascinated by the car's integrity of design. Dashboard, with its original gauges and steering wheel, looks perfect. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) There are a few minute hairline splits on the dash top, but nothing to lose sleep over. Stereo is an updated ALPINE CD system. Note original shift knob. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Genuine leather throne seats are very comfortable, power-operated Carrera units. Door and side panels, as well as the black carpeting, are in excellent condition. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Black leather is still supple and aromatic, lending the car a touch of luxury. There are no rips or tears anywhere! Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Occasional rear seats look immaculate; they fold forward, creating additional luggage capacity. Check out the rare KAMEI stereo speaker unit. The '77s were the last 911s to feature pop-out rear quarter windows, a neat touch. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Ready for a test drive? So are we, but before we start, let's have a closer look at engine and undercarriage. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Engine compartment appears toothbrush clean, did not have to be modified at all to accept the larger power plant. Click on any of the above images for a full-size view The 217-horsepower 3.2-liter Carrea engine, heart of this exciting Carrera, is fully certified and smog legal in the State of California. Installation of such a 3.2 does not come cheap; it typically runs between $10-12,000.00. Click on any of the above images for a full-size view This particular engine is said to have come out of a 56,000-mile donor car. It starts, runs, and sounds fabulous. A major service has been performed, the clutch was replaced, and the transaxle was re-sealed, less than 4,000 miles ago. There are no ill manners--such as smoking, (oil) drinking, or leaking--to report. With its enlarged volume, Motronic fuel injection, as well as updated chain tensioners and head studs, the 3.2 motor has rightfully been called Porsche's best engine ever. Here's a mill that can still be worked on with hand tools while delivering exciting supercar performance and excellent fuel mileage. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Engine underneath: no diapers needed! Most often, the state of its undercarriage speaks volumes about a particular Porsche's condition. This one has nothing to hide! Take a closer look: Being from California's arid Central Valley, the car has survived 33 years without any corrosion. (Porsche's galvanization process helped, of course.) Note: Front tie rod ends have just been replaced. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Floor pans, door sills, and longitudinals are dry, clean, and entirely unmolested. There will be no restoration worries here! Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Monday, April 19, turned out to be another fine day in San Buenaventura. There was no need for arm-twisting in order to exchange the office desk for a place behind the Porsche's volant. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) After letting the engine warm up properly, we headed to the 101 freeway for a quick run up the coast, right along the Pacific Ocean. The only danger you'll face driving this potent Porsche will be the radar guns of eager CHP officers. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) At 85mph, the tachometer shows a mere 3,300rpm in fifth gear, with 60lbs of oil pressure to boot. Smooth sailing all the way! Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) A lightweight vintage Porsche, powered by what's arguably Porsche's best engine ever, certainly is among the more exciting cars to own and drive. Aside from impressive power, the three-point-two motor has a wonderful torque band, allowing for relaxed cruising even in in the lower rpm range. Most important, however, is its longevity. It's not uncommon for late 1980s Carreras to reach 250,000 miles without a hiccup. This one's still fresh and destined to provide many years of faithful service without needing anything but regular oil changes. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) With its most attractive color combination, perfect stance, amazing 3.2-liter motor, electric sunroof, and great California provenance, this rare Porsche is ready to deliver the goods, while being a cost-efficient, reliable sports car, even qualifying for most affordable classic car insurance. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Featuring the iconic look of a vintage, air-cooled 911 Carrera, with late-model Carrera horsepower to match--it's truly The Best of Both Worlds.
