Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 1981 VW Rabbit Pickup Bio-Diesel I purchased this car in April of 2008. I have drove it 27,085 miles in the last 2 years. The engine and trannsmission are factory original with an estimated mileage of 124,595. The mileage is estimated because I have put two gauge sets in this truck to get everything working. I purchased it from a NH VW dealer who started the restoration. Since then here is what I've done. REPLACED : Both brake drums and rotors. New tires. The fuel selector valve that changes you from the factory fuel tank to the 32 gallon bio-diesel tank in the bed. Both wheel bearings, Steering rack, Speedo cable. Glow plugs. Sunroof with new headliner. Positive & Negative battery cables. 50 amp fusible link for glow plug relay. Shifter linkage. Steering shaft bearing. Tailgate (comes with both). Seat belts. Lower A arms. Ball joints. Steel braided brake lines. Brake caliper. Energy suspension bushings. Inner and outer tie rod ends. Glow plug relay. Injection pump. Timing belt. V-belt. Both axles. All 4 fuel injectors. Most hoses. Drivers side window regulator. added hushmat to doors. changed rear tank fuel filter to marine type. added AM/FM CD stereo with speakers. I also undercoated the vehicle. This restoration is almost complete. The paint is in very good shape. There is no rust. I added upper and lower strut bars. The only thing this truck is missing is one rear inner rubber bumper pad. I have not been able to find one. I also added a center console with three gauges that light up but are not wired. The steering wheel was upgraded to a new type ( old wheel included) Now for what is left to do. The engine has leakage problems due to sitting in a barn so long. The gaskets got dry rotted. It was a concern for me but never worked on due to me not wanting to tear at least the top off the engine. It has trouble starting in severe cold weather. I was told that it is probably time for a head job. The seals could be done at the same time. Right now it starts easy, runs well, and has no known problems other than what I just mentioned. I was planning on keeping this truck for a long time and using the bio-diesel feature which I was told by a VW mechanic is one of the better ones he's seen. I have put hundreds of gallons through it using only 40% bio and 60% diesel with cetane boost. I changed the oil every 5,000 miles and the inside of this engine has no sludge. It comes with a lot of extra parts, filters, and such. You won't find an original Caddy in this nice of shape. The only body damage is a dent in the tailgate. Both tailgates I have are dented. I'm lousy at bodywork so I never had it fixed. There is a front end collision damage point on the drivers side bumper. If you look on the drivers side fender well you can see that the bumper has been pushed back an inch or two. The only way I noticed this was because the front bumper is not quite symetrical. The bumper shock could be pulled back to factory very easily.
