Vehicle Detail

* * * 1960 Oldsmobile Dynamic 88 Convertible * * * Hard to find body style Oregon car from new Clean, solid driver  Up for auction here on eBay is this striking 1960 Olds 88 convertible.  Full size GM convertibles from the late 50s and early 60s are hard to find in this condition, as most examples available today are either over the top restorations, modified customs or barn-find rusted hulks.  This particular car is a good honest example that has remained bone stock and mostly all original.  An Oregon car from new, this 88 features a straight, solid body and undercarriage, mostly original interior, and all original brightwork and glass.   Click to enlarge any of the photos below, a link to a slideshow of all the enlarged images is available to view at the bottom of this page.   The car has had one repaint in its original color of  Provincial White.  The paint is to good driver quality standards, it has good shine and shows uniform application.  The paint quality is ideal for a car that is driven and enjoyed, it's not Pebble Beach Concours material but simply a respectable and presentable job for an honest old car.  The body on this big Olds is very straight, showing no dents, dings or waviness, pretty impressive considering its size.  The body is very solid, the one exception being some minor bubbling on the lower passenger side, as shown in the 4th photo below.  The previous owner of 11 years has stated that these areas have remained the same from when he acquired the car in 1999 and have not grown or changed.  The rest of the car shows no problem areas, the undercarriage is also exceptionally solid.  Panel fit is within GM standards of the era, doors show good gaps and close precisely. All of the stainless trim on the car is unrestored and unbelievably straight, the belt line spears are completely free of dings, a miracle after 50 years.  The chrome trim throughout the car is also in unrestored condtion, just as nice as can be with no hazing or pitting anywhere, another signpost that it's an Oregon native.  The cast front grill is excellent, with no broken fins and still showing perfect alignment and finish.  Tires are Remington Cushion-Aire wide whites with low miles and good tread.  Hubcaps and trim rings are original pieces in good shape.   The front and rear bumpers have never been re-plated, the factory chrome work is still holding up beautifully.  The left rear bumperette shows some dings, otherwise both bumpers are straight and true with no pitting, they are a strong point on this car.  Emblems and signal lenses are all good with no cracks, the headlights are original T3's for the high beam and GE units for the low beam. The car was optioned with tinted glass, all of the E-Z-Eye pieces are original to the car and still excellent, including the windshield.  The top is in in good shape, it has shrunk back a bit but still latches easily and seals well.  The back window is clear and pliable, the top raises and lowers smoothly, a new pump has been fitted and the hydraulics flushed and filled with new fluid.  The trunk is unrestored and original, it carries all of the factory jacking equipment and shows no rust along the seams or along the weatherstrip.  This interior is all original with the exception of new material on the back seat bottom cushion.  It shows some light wear and patina throughout but for its age I give it a pass.  The car can comfortably seat 6, it has seatbelts for 4.  The dash pad is in great shape with no splits or cracks, a couple minor blems keep it from being mint. The steering wheel has zero cracks and not even any spidering, a remarkable survivor piece for its age.   Lights and signals all operate correctly, ventilation controls are working and the car has a very effective heater for cool mornings with the top down.  The radio works but the clock does not.  Horn works but on the right side push button only.  All interior courtesy lights work, including the glovebox, which contains an original owners manual.   The 371 motor runs very well with no smoke or noise, the car has a very nice balanced idle.  It's typically cold blooded but runs very smoothly after warming up for a minute.  The motor offers plenty of power on demand and the transmission shifts perfectly.  Like most old cars it has a few drips and drops from underneath but nothing major.  Power steering and power brakes make piloting this large barge easy and the car has good braking power.  The engine bay is undetailed and original, still with factory markings on the firewall. If you take a close look at the undercarriage you'll see that this is a no hit, no rust car.  These floor pans are bare steel, never undercoated or patched, they tell the real story of this 50 year old survivor.   Click here for a slideshow of all of the enlarged images.
