Vehicle Detail
OVERVIEW:This 1971 Pontiac LeMans Sport Hardtop is a very original, quite complete, and unmolested, one owner driven car. It is in driving condition, and has its original smooth running 350 ci. V8 engine mated to an automatic transmission, power steering, and power brakes. The owner bought the car new from his local Pontiac dealer, Magwood Motors of Nanton, Alberta, and it has remained with him to this day, spending its entire life in the dry climate of southern Alberta where it currently remains registered as an antique auto. This Canadian built LeMans Sport is a model 237-37. It has had only one repaint in its original color, and has a totally original interior with bucket seats and center console with shifter. It is overall very solid and straight, with only a few minor rust blisters in a few spots. The odometer shows 142,629 original miles. There have been no modifications from original done to this vehicle apart from a change of wheels, but the original rims and wheel covers are still with the car.I have driven one of these in the past, they ride well, they pull out very quickly and can fly down the highway, they’re fast!Basically untouched, it shows the normal wear and tear of its years and mileage, and has been maintained and kept in roadworthy condition.A reliable driver as is, or an excellent car to restore or customize to your own taste. This listing provides many more details as you scroll thru. Near the end of this listing under Payment Terms you will find a link to a photo album of 149 pictures. DRIVETRAIN:The engine is the original 350 ci. V8 equipped with 2 bbl. carburetor. The engine starts easily, runs smooth, sounds good and doesn’t smoke. The engine compartment is not detailed, and shows the grime and wear of its use and miles. All other components on and around the engine appear as original equipment and operate as required, having been maintained and serviced over the years to keep the car roadworthy and reliable.Recent servicing included a new fuel pump, spark plugs, wires, points and condenser, and a carb kit was installed. All hoses and belts appear in good condition. The radiator is original and in good condition and there are no overheating problems. The automatic transmission works fine, but the owner indicates he has to get the car rolling in 1st or 2nd gear before shifting into drive, likely a simple linkage adjustment. The undercarriage shows the usual signs of grime, but there were no puddles or serious leakage evident in its parking spot. The owner would also change the rear differential oil as part of his maintenance and this is evidenced by the clean rear cover on the diff. CHASSIS:The chassis is all original and unrestored, showing the road dirt and grime of its miles. There is no heavy rust on the frame and it is very solid. The underside sheet metal also appears solid with mostly just surface rust and no significant rust issues.Front end, suspension, power steering components, and exhaust have all been maintained and appear to be in serviceable condition. The power brakes are in good order, equipped with optional discs on the front. The gas tank has no issues. The running tires are white lettered Firestone Firehawk SS radials, 215/65R15 on the front, 235/60R15 at the rear in roadable condition, mounted on after-market turbine style mag wheels. The right rear is missing its center cap.The original 14” wheels with good radial tires and sporting correct original wheel covers will go with the car, along with the original jack. BODY & PAINT:The car has had one professional exterior repaint since new, in its original metallic green color, and is quite straight and overall very solid. The work was done some years ago, about 1993, and it appears that it may have received a new lower quarter section on the right side as evidenced by a seam visible from inside the trunk, midway up. This is the only body work and paint the car has ever had. The only evident flaws on the exterior are a few minor blisters showing near the left wheel well moldings, and a small dent on the left fender behind the side marker lamps and just ahead of the left front wheel.Given the years that have passed since the work was done, I believe there are no major surprises with this car. The paint still retains a good luster, and there are no dents, or hail damage to the hood, roof, or trunk lid.Having been painted with doors closed, some overspray appears just inside the B posts as a light haze when doors are open, shows up worse in the pics than it actually is. Outer and inner rockers all appear very solid, as well as the floor and trunk pans, and quarter panels. The drop down panels from the trunk pan to the lower rear quarters are both solid with no rust out.Door bottoms are very solid also. The factory ‘Cordova’ roof is an original option. It is in great condition, still lays flat and tight, and there is only one spot small bump area showing near the bottom right corner of the rear window. There are 2 very minor ‘soft’ dents on the roof above the right rear quarter window, not easily noticed. ELECTRICAL:The car retains its original electrical system and all appears in serviceable condition. The headlights work but left low beam burnt out at time of inspection. Otherwise the horn, wipers, heater fan, lighter and factory AM radio all work. This car is equipped with a gauge package which includes temperature and oil pressure gauges, and a tachometer. The fuel gauge is stuck, owner suspects the float has stuck due to modern fuel and storage, typical problem these days.Rear defogger not working, not investigated. Silver accent panel at lower dash has a small crack next to the wiper switch, and has been trimmed slightly around the radio for a previous stereo, but that is not really even noticeable. INTERIOR:Interior is all original and overall quite decent condition. The dash pad is really nice with no cracks across the top, but there is a teardrop shaped nick to the left of the right vent which could be touched up with paint or filled in with a repair material. The woodgrain accent panel is very nice, as is the steering wheel. The headliner is intact with no tears or stains evident. The sun visors are very good. The rear package shelf has a very slight warp, and a small hole each side from previous speaker wire run. The kick panels, door panels and rear side panels are all in excellent and clean condition. There is a slight lifting of the cover on the left arm rest, and a small chunk out of the top of the left rear windlace. The original vinyl seats are pretty good, but there is a split in the outer panel of the left seat cushion.Equipped with center console. The original carpet is still in relatively good condition apart from being a bit soiled. There is the original set of 4 matching green Pontiac script floor mats. The door and trunk weather seals are original are still soft and in good serviceable condition.Aluminum door sills are in decent shape with no corrosion. The shaded windshield is in good condition, all other glass on the car is tinted and also in good condition. The owner has a spare new windshield that he will make available to the new owner if desired. BRIGHTWORK:All original chrome, stainless, and aluminum bright work is still on the car. The only missing piece is one of the vertical accent bars on the right fender.Front and rear bumpers are in very good original condition with good chrome and great shine, no rust or peeling. One tiny dimple below right tail light. All items such as the grilles and surrounds, headlamp bezels, door handles, LeMans and Sport scripts are in good condition with no pitting. The grilles are very nice, very straight bars with no cracks or breaks, but some silver is worn off on the right grille. The lower rocker aluminum moldings sport 350 emblems and are straight, but the left one is corroded below the door.Tail lamp lenses on the car are 1970, and the left lens has a chip at top, but three correct 1971 lenses in good condition are included, 2 lefts and 1 right. The four original hubcaps are in nice condition. SUMMARY:Original glove box literature include the Owner’s Manual and Warranty documents dated March 11, 1971 from Magwood Motors. The owner also has a parts car and spare transmission that can go with the car if you want them. This is an affordable and easy car to maintain and keep roadworthy. It would be ideal as a daily driver, or it would make a super candidate for restoration or customizing. There should be no hidden secrets or horrors with this car. If you are considering a sporty GM coupe from the early 70’s, then this could be it! This is a great car to get into the hobby with, and be able to enjoy while you improve and enhance it over time. Due to his limited use of it over the last few years, the owner has decided to make it available to its next caretaker. It is being offered with a reasonable reserve.
