However, with a V-8 engine and full-size amenities -- including standard seating for eight -- this rugged all-roader resembles the former more in flavor and flair but offers a base-price far closer to the latter. Following a mild face- and feature-lift last year, the made-in-America Sequoia carries over virtually intact for 2006, offering SR5 and upline Limited editions in both rear-drive and four-wheel-drive configurations. Cosmetic enhancements for 2005 helped the Sequoia maintain a contemporary, albeit conventional, appearance. Its traditional SUV profile integrates a front fascia, fender flares, and C-pillar treatment that highlight clear family ties with the Tundra and 4Runner. Standard 16-inch steel wheels wear 245/70 M+S tires on the SR5 and 265/70s on the SR5 4WD while Limited models have 265/65R17 rubber on alloy rims. Step up and slip into this versatile hauler and you enter a cabin that's roomy, comfortable, and well isolated. The Tundra influence is strong here as well, particularly in the dash and door panel design. While that means the key instruments are legible and main controls positioned in a user-friendly manner, there are a few exceptions. The most notable relate to the less-than-ideal placement of switchgear for the power windows, power mirrors, and seat heaters, and a temperature/fan speed display that's virtually unreadable in most lighting conditions. Filling the center stack are the audio and/or optional touch-screen navigation systems, controls for the standard front/rear automatic air conditioning, and activator buttons for the 4WD system, on vehicles so equipped. Both SR5 and Limited models are feature-rich, and include items like power front seats, cruise control, power windows/lock/mirrors, a tilt steering column, six-speaker AM/FM/CD stereo, and a power-down liftgate window. The Limited replaces cloth trim with leather and adds items like keyless remote entry, a 10-speaker JBL sound system, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. Storage in all Sequoias is provided by a locking glovebox, multi-level covered console storage bin, and door pockets. Ten cupholders and four 12V powerpoints add even more utility to the mix. While the standard passenger load is eight in a 2/3/3 configuration, our Limited-spec test vehicle had the Luxury Package, which replaces the 60/40-split folding second-row bench with two individual Captain's Chairs and a removable console. Like the front buckets, these second-row perches offer good head and better legroom, but decidedly more straight-line comfort than lateral support. Each one tips and flips to permit easier -- although not exactly easy -- access to the 50/50 split folding/removable third-row bench. The full-aft quarters are actually capable of carrying two average-sized adults in modest comfort, but three-up occupancy, even for kids, is a less-inviting proposition. When cargo takes priority, the Sequoia can carry anywhere from 26.6 cubic feet of it with all seats up to a voluminous 128.1 cu ft in its most open mode. Loading and unloading is facilitated by the large liftgate with bumper-level cutout. Complementing its solid structure, engineered crumple zones, and three-point seatbelts with retractors/lockers/force limiters, the Sequoia comes with "smart" front airbags, and Toyota's Star Safety System (stability and traction controls, ABS discs with Electronic Brake force Distribution and Brake Assist). Front-side and side-curtain airbags are optional, as are daytime running lights. Sequoia motivation comes from Toyota's 4.7-liter i-Force V-8 and a smooth, responsive five-speed automatic transmission. Upgraded with VVT-I -- the firm's "intelligent" variable valve timing for 2005 -- the free-revving DOHC engine turns out 273 hp at 5,400 rpm and 314 lb-ft of torque at 3,400 revs -- on regular unleaded gas. More impressive, over 90 percent of that critical latter commodity is on hand by 1,200 rpm, enough to drop 0-60-mph times to around eight seconds and hold EPA fuel economy numbers to 15/18 mpg on all models. Both the SR5 and Limited also have Toyota's Active Traction Control and Vehicle Stability Control as standard. 4WD Sequoias offer push-button shift-on-the-fly transitions, and feature a lockable center differential and dual-range transfer case. Reasonably quick and commendably civil, the Sequoia makes living with a full-size SUV a quite palatable proposition. With loads of torque ever at the ready, the i-Force V-8 keeps it well apace of any traffic situation. The Sequoia's soft brake pedal takes some getting used to, but ultimately, its sophisticated ABS package does a good job of halting this 5,000-lb SUV with little drama. While the steering feels rather numb and vague on center, the biggest caveat in maneuvering the Sequoia through tighter confines is its substantial 42.3-foot turning circle. Pairing double wishbones up front with a live rear axle, the Sequoia's suspension excels in soaking up most bumps and road imperfections, although there's a fair amount of body roll when you press it hard through the twisties. Exceed the modest grip of its M+S tires or jump out of the throttle in a corner, and the stability control will quickly--an overtly--kick in to bring this big Toyota back into line. Its off-road character displays similarly protective qualities, with 10.0-10.6 inches of ground clearance, beefy skidplates over its critical mechanical bits, and optional height-adjustable suspension with rear leveling. The Sequoia isn't the most powerful full-size SUV, nor does it boast the highest passenger or tow ratings. But this capable and personable Toyota strikes an impressive balance of function and comfort that will have strong appeal to anyone who wants major helpings of real utility on a grand scale. Those demanding the absolute in motive force or people-moving capacity should look to alternatives like the Chevrolet Suburban/Tahoe, Ford Expedition, or Nissan Armada. But for the vast majority of SUV intenders, the Sequoia's singular blend of sophistication, functionality, reliability, safety, and Toyota quality should place it high on the list of potential considerees. Those same factors figure heavily in helping the Sequoia earn 2005 Best Overall Value accolades in our IntelliChoice Total Ownership Cost ratings.
