Vehicle Detail

Up for auction is my 1995 Mercedes-Benz E320 sedan, finished in Black Pearl metallic paint over Gray leather interior with a low 104,000 miles. My car has undergone extensive refurbishment to provide its new owner with a turn-key opportunity to enjoy one of the most popular models Mercedes has built in recent years. History of the W124: Penned by renowned Mercedes designer Bruno Sacco, the W124 first went on sale in North America in 1985 as the 300E. At the time of its launch, the car was considered one of the most advanced in the world for its aerodynamics, technology and safety innovations. Over time, the W124 series expanded to include coupe, cabriolet and station wagon variants, all of which have proven to be extremely reliable. During the final two years of production (1994 and 1995), Mercedes reorganized their model naming structure, creating the first official “E-Class” cars. About My Car and its Refurbishment: This car has always been registered in California since new. The car is equipped comprehensively as all E-Class cars were in 1995 – full power accessories, automatic climate control, full leather interior, standard 3.2L inline 6 engine with 4-speed automatic transmission, driver and passenger airbags, ABS brakes – the only options on mine are the power rear sunshade and two-position memory for the driver’s seat. I purchased the car in December 2017, initially looking to use it to commute to a job which fell through right after – I have another couple of projects I’m working on so it’s time to find this baby a home. This is my ninth Mercedes and my third W124 sedan, so I have a good background with these cars. I knew that the car was going to need some TLC to bring it up to the condition worthy of a new Mercedes, but it has great bones, having been garaged and gently driven by its last owner (only 5,000 miles over a 10 year period). I have consulted with both a local German car specialist, as well as the closest Mercedes-Benz dealer, for vehicle inspections and have followed all of their recommendations for service and repairs, as well as additional items I chose to upgrade. (A special shout-out to fellow eBay user Dave “Obi Wan” for his invaluable technical expertise and parts.) I have used a combination of Mercedes OEM parts as well as European-made OES parts (Original Equipment Supplier, i.e. Bilstein shocks). I took the car on a 1,300 mile drive and it performed well in all conditions, from mountain driving and the cool coast to the 115 degree heat of Palm Springs. Naturally, as this is a 23-year old car, there are some things which will continue to come up with use, but as it sits, it’s a turn-key car, ready to go another 100,000 miles. Here is a brief summary of parts I have replaced or repaired, listed by vehicle system: Climate Control: · Replaced Schrader valves and topped off R134A refrigerant; replaced AC pressure switch, ACC head unit in dash, heater control valve, cabin air temperature sensor, cabin air filters Cooling System: · Replaced thermostat, water pump and coolant reservoir tank; flushed system and replaced coolant Suspension: · Replaced front struts and mounts, rear shocks, tires, left and right side lower control arm assemblies (including ball joints and bushings), left tie rod end, steering stabilizer; Alignment Driveline: · Replaced front and rear flex couplers, driveshaft center bearing support and bearing Electrical: · Replaced wiring harness, overload protection relay and all fuses in fuse panel Engine: · Replaced intake air temperature sensor, oxygen sensor, engine mounts, oil filter housing gaskets, serpentine belt, belt tensioner and pulley, idler pulley, fan clutch tensioner bracket, alternator, valve cover gasket, injector gaskets, cover grommets and crankcase breather gaskets. Cleaned and re-greased air pump bearings Interior: · Replaced driver side B pillar trim, center console box, driver sun visor; driver seat lower frame, gearbox and cable; passenger side headrest gears; headliner; MB OEM rubber mats Audio System: · Replaced stereo with Alpine radio/CD/USB/Bluetooth head unit, driver door speaker; inner and outer antenna seals Brake System: · Replaced front rotors and brake pads, rear brake pads; flushed and replaced brake fluid Other Repairs: · Replaced wiper blade; new battery in 2017; engine oil at 100,000 miles in December 2017; spark plugs and fuel filter at 96,000 miles; Mass Air Flow Sensor in December 2017 At this point, everything works as it should, especially the most trouble-prone components such as the sunroof, cruise control, power windows and climate control system. The wiring harness on the later W124 cars such as mine was a major failure point due to Mercedes’ decision to use “eco-friendly” biodegradable insulation which has failed over time (resulting in a $2,000+ repair) ; mine has been replaced with the upgraded (and better) Delphi wiring harness. Likewise, the company’s decision to use more environmentally friendly components also meant the adhesives used in the headliner were prone to failure; I have replaced the headliner with a color-matched material using the newest 3M adhesives. Condition of the Car: Beyond the mechanical work described above, I have also done my best to ensure the car’s cosmetic appearance is more than satisfactory. The paint is original and was well-preserved as the car was garaged for most of its life; I had the paint professionally polished and hand waxed. Of course, this is still a 23-year old car, so there are a few minor dings and surface scratches which didn’t polish out – if you are interested in a concours restoration it would involve refinishing the clearcoat on the paint, none of the scratches have gone beyond that. Likewise, I have replaced a few interior trim pieces which were showing wear. The leather is original with no tears; the patina is lovely, with only a slight wear spot on the driver’s seat left side bolster and on the folding center armrest at the edge of the lid. I clean and condition the leather using Griot’s Garage leather care products. The wood is in excellent condition, with the usual hairline cracks in the lacquer around the gear shift. As mentioned above, the original sagging headliner was replaced with new color-matched fabric. The original wheels show some signs of “curb rash” but are in very good condition overall. The original spare tire has never been used; the complete tool kit and jack are in the trunk. Original owner’s manual with service booklet (stamped by MB of San Francisco) and vehicle data card are included. Two master keys also included. A binder including all receipts for dealer service and parts I have installed is included (photos are available on request), as well as a copy of the Carfax history report. The only minor issue on the Carfax is something listed when the car was with its first owner as “other damage” – when I reached out to Carfax I was told that is NOT any sort of collision damage but would be something covered by an insurance comprehensive claim (i.e. vehicle break-in). I realize that my asking price is above KBB and even NADA Guides prices – I am only attempting to recoup my investment…if you were to find another similar year and mileage E320 I can guarantee it would need most if not all of the same items replaced, and unless you can do those repairs yourself, I assure you the cost of having this work done at a German independent shop or MB dealer would far exceed what I have put into mine. In the words of the late Lee Iacocca, “If you can find a better car, buy it.” Terms of Sale: Winning bidder will be required to make a $500 deposit by PayPal within 48 hours of the auction close, with remaining balance to be paid in cash or bank transfer within 14 days of auction close. If the bidder wishes to pay by cashier’s check it will need to be drawn on a major bank. Vehicle doesn’t move until funds have cleared. Bidder is responsible for any shipping costs, and vehicle must be picked up, or shipping arrangements made, within 7 days of payment. Should the bidder wish to pick up the vehicle in person I can meet at either Sacramento or Oakland Airport. I have attempted to identify and correct any issues with the car with the assistance of my local Mercedes dealer; however there is always the chance that something may have been missed – if the bidder wishes to have the vehicle inspected, it is at your own expense – I recommend Carchex or AAA. Please ask any questions prior to bidding. Thanks for considering my E320 and good luck on your bid! Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE
