Vehicle Detail
A friend of mine in Atlanta started this restoration in 2000. He had the heads and crank done by Ed Korn of Cycleworks, purchased a new complete exhaust system and aluminum rims from Ulis of Germany and had all the paintwork done by Pauleez of Atlanta. He also accumulated a number of other new parts and nicely organized them in boxes in his basement. Then the project stalled for the next 17 years as two daughters came along, his business started growing rapidly and he took in an interest in restoring Ford Broncos. I got a call last year that it was time to clean out the basement and move the project along so I drove down and picked up the rolling chassis and all the boxes full of parts. A retired friend of mine here in Asheville who had previously restored more than a dozen /2’s agreed to help me put the bike together over the winter in his shop. We purchased a new set of pistons and rings from Benchmark and had a local machine shop HCV Motorsport hones the heads to match. We sent the transmission up to Richard Scheckler of Ohio to it rebuilt, the generator to Gerhard Heller of Germany to have it restored and the speedo to Palo Alto. We had the front hub turned and completely rebuilt the front and rear brakes as well as the suspension by putting new springs. Basically everything on this motorcycle is new or rebuilt eg cables, battery, petcock, voltage regulator, solo seat and clutch. All parts purchased from Benchmark or Ulis. Note the addition of a set of real Hella bar end signal lights and Albert bar end mirrors. I’ve put about 170 break in miles and have re-torques the head, changed the oil and did some final carb tuning. The bike comes with receipts for the work described and a clear North Carolina title in my name. Please note from the photos this is a matching numbers machine. These R50’s from the 1950’s are sweet machines with great running motors. Vintage 1957 license plate not included. It’s going on my Goldstar of the same year. I am selling this as I am close to completing a restoration on my 1954 R51/3 and have decided to keep that one. Inspections welcomed. I’m in Asheville, North Carolina.
