Vehicle Detail
OVERVIEW:This is an original 1989 Mazda RX-7 Turbo II with extremely low mileage of just over 1,800 km. (1,100 miles) on the odometer today, and an unusual story to account for that.It is fully optioned as available from the factory.According to its serial number it is the 35th unit built in Japan that year of the second generation FC Series 5 Turbo cars. Built from 1989 to 1992, the Series 5 cars featured updated styling and better engine management, lighter rotors, and a higher 9.0:1 compression ratio for the turbo model, generating 200 hp. While new on the Mazda dealer lot in 1989 this car sustained some minor hail damage, primarily on the hood, and subsequently also suffered dent damage to the passenger side door. For reasons unknown to its present owner, Mazda donated the car to the main college in Calgary, SAIT (Southern Alberta Institute of Technology), to be used for education and training of students in the automotive programs. The car remained with SAIT for 5 years, after which time it was transferred to James Fowler High School in Calgary to continue in the same capacity, where it served until it was retired many years later. The present owner purchased the car from the high school in April 2012, and was the first private owner of the car and in June 2015 was the first to ever register the car for road use. It had 528 km. (328 miles) on it at that time.An Alberta Government Motor Vehicle Inspection was performed June 27, 2015 and the car passed in all categories without question.A Carproof Vehicle History Report issued April 16, 2018 validates this timeline of events and found no records of accidents or damage, theft, recalls, or registration outside of Alberta or prior to 2015.Both the Inspection and History Reports are available for your perusal upon request. The car has been driven only about 800 miles in the last 3 years, the owner intent on keeping it low miles. It has spent its entire life indoors and has not seen any winter use what so ever. The car starts, runs, drives and handles as new.The car is currently registered and insured, fully roadworthy. The donation by Mazda and the time spent as an educational tool did result in some minor alterations from how it sat on the showroom floor, but overall do not detract from its low mileage, virtually new mechanical condition, and solid body. Mazda’s standard protocol for a donated car was to remove the serial number tag from the dash, along with a frail and futile attempt to scratch the stamping on the engine side of the firewall. Prior to having the car registered and inspected, the owner had a replacement serial tag made and affixed to the original dash tag location. The firewall stamping remains clear and intact, and the serial number also appears on the factory applied manufacturer’s label on the driver door latch post. The correct and original serial number is therefore matched in 3 locations on the car. This was deemed acceptable to the Government of Alberta Ministry of Transportation, and a recent phone call to US Customs confirmed that the replacement dash tag would not present a problem should the car be imported into the USA, given that it carries the original number and is validated by the firewall stamping, manufacturer’s label, and current registration. This listing outlines any other changes and provides many more details as you scroll thru, followed by a link to a photo album of 137 pics. DRIVETRAIN:The original stock rotary 13B Wankell 1.3 Liter Intercooled Turbocharged engine starts, runs and sounds good, as it should with such low miles. All components around the engine appear and function in good order. All belts and hoses appear in good condition. The engine compartment is as original, and has been maintained clean and tidy. There are no signs of any corrosion problems on the surrounding sheet metal. The 5-speed automatic transmission and LSD rear differential also function as one would expect. There is no evidence of any oil leakage problems. CHASSIS:The underside of the car shows only the road dust of its few miles. It retains its factory undercoating, which has been scuffed in a few small areas along the longitudinal rails from being jacked up. A few minor dents appear along the rails as well simply from improper jack placement. These second generation cars had much improved suspension. Mazda introduced its Dynamic Tracking Suspension System (DTSS), which included revised Independent Rear Suspension (IRS) and Auto Adjusting Suspension (AAS). Power rack and pinion steering was also more precise.Power disc brakes all around with four-piston brakes up front. All components stock and in good condition.Rubber boots on CV joints and all rubber mounts are good. Front and rear stabilizers had been removed. The owner had all new Mazda front stabilizer components installed, receipts included. He also ordered all new rear stabilizer components, and received all the mounting hardware, only to be later advised that the rear stabilizer was no longer available from Mazda. As such the rear stabilizer is not on the car, but all the new mounting hardware will go with the car, and a new bar will need to be sourced after-market. The stock exhaust system was changed out. The new components are in very good condition, but the installation of the dual mufflers at the rear appears odd. The mufflers should be rotated 180 degrees so that the out ports are at the bottom of the muffler rather than the top. This would also tuck them up higher and out of sight. The car is sporting its original tires. They are Bridgestone Potenza RE71’s, P205/55R16 in like new condition, mounted on original alloy wheels in nice condition. The spare is a 135/70R16 BODY & PAINT:The body and paint are original, apart from the passenger door having had dent repairs and repaint while at SAIT, and now somewhat aged and slightly faded. No polishing has been done, and there is some primer overspray below the front bottom corner of the door and along the upper black trim. There are no rust issues. There is some hail damage on the hood, not severe but it’s there as shown in the pics. None found on the roof or sunroof. There are minor blemishes and miscellaneous nicks on some panels. These include small dings along the left door and quarter, and one on the right fender. Other than those, there is a scratch low on the front of the left fender ahead of the wheel, one on the right fender above the wheel, and one across the gas door onto the right quarter. There is no damage to the front bumper/spoiler, the side ground effects package, or the rear spoiler and bumper. ELECTRICAL:All electrical components on the car are in good working order and the battery is only 2 years old. This includes the hide-away headlamps, all lights, wipers, horn, air conditioner, cruise control, power windows, power mirrors and power sunroof. All dash displays are functional and the Turbo Boost gauge works. All plastic lenses on the car are in good condition. The right door mirror is new. So as not to let music distract from education the sound system was removed, including the rear speakers from their tubs. The tub covers are missing also. INTERIOR:The interior remains as original with leather seats and door panel inserts. The only notable wear is on the driver seat, from years of students hoping in and out. The rest of the interior is nice, no cracks in the dash pad, no tears in the headliner, nice door panels and carpets. The interior plastics are in very good condition, as are all the door and window seals and weather strips. The windshield and all other glass on the car is in good condition. The left kick panel is missing, as is the jack and its stowage compartment cover. SUMMARY:This is a rare find, a 29 year old car with just over 1,000 miles on it, and it presents an unusual opportunity. You can attend to its few and mostly minor needs and get as close to a new 1989 RX-7 Turbo II as is likely possible today.Perhaps you have one of these that is worn out but hate to give it up, and have the bits that this one is missing, talk about an easy upgrade! The owner’s minimal use of the car along with having other interests, have led him to the decision to pass it along to its next caretaker. It is being offered with a reasonable 4 digit reserve.
