Vehicle Detail
Up for auction is a very interesting and rare 1954 Corvette. This car has a serious SCCA race history and is one of the earliest know Corvettes that was road raced and used for testing. I will put all the information I have on this car out here for everyone to see and let it speak for itself. Let me start with a brief introduction of the information I have gathered. Mr. Robert Clift was 2nd in command at GM under Mr. Duntov in the Corvette program. Mr. Duntov had his personal "TEST MULE 1954" and Robert Clift had his personal "WHITE MULE 1954". These cars both saw heavy research and development on and off the track. Currently Duntov's 54 test mule is fully restored and in the Lingenfelter collection. This particular car has been tucked away for ALOT of years. I will list all of the supporting facts that show this car to be the REAL 1954 Corvette that Bob Clift owned and raced in SCCA events and was also used for clandestine testing at the Waterford hills race track (with parts that were gifted from Duntov for reaserach and development). I have contacted the SCCA and have a lot of vintage pictures and race information about the car. I also have had numerous conversations with a few people that were close to Mr. Clift. They were able to give me some very interesting information about the car. The most interesting information I found is that Mr. Clift (before his passing) was reunited with his car in 1997. The car that was "found", restored and reunited with him is pictured below. Funny thing here is that I HAVE THE REAL CAR. I was told that the "found car" was and I quote "questionable and the man who found it was also". WELL I GUESS SO. There were only 4 1954 Corvettes registered to race SCCA in the mid to late 50's. 3 of them were white. Duntovs test mule, 1 that is currently still vintage road raced and the other white one, this car. When this car was set up to race, it had a V8 and a prototype 4 speed. The "found car" supposedly has that motor and transmission in it according to my source. This car was found with no motor/transmission or headlight buckets. This car has the following features that directly relate it to being Mr Clifts car. 1. SCCA Road race type roll bar. The down bar comes directly into the passenger floor. No other 54' SCCA car had this roll bar configuration.2. Custom built coilovers on the rear shocks that were integrated onto factory gm spiral shocks 3. Custom built clutch Z bar under the hood. Not production style, but not home made either. (interesting part)4. Identical damage to the passenger rocker panel directly under the passenger door as seen in vintage race pictures.5. Screw holes around the headlight buckets from when the headlights had tin covers on the body.6. Drilled backing plates on thee front brakes for cooling.7. Interesting coil mount on the firewall and weird throttle cable/bracket 8. I was told the original 6 cylinder radiator tank was screwed to the passenger side inner fender. You will see evidence of screw holes for this modification in the pics.9. The swiss cheese holes that were drilled in the nose for cooling. Please look at the pictures of the damaged parts that have been patched.10. Robert bought this car in Michigan, wrecked on the drivers side and then turned it into a race car. There are Original GM replacement rocker and front fender on this car, with a fabricated sheetmetal inner rocker panel (from the original wreck repair). I could keep going on and on. I have done my home work and I know what car I have. It is being listed with no reserve. I know the car is rough. But the frame is solid and this car needs to be returned to race trim. I welcome any call and questions. Thanks, Brett 225-235-0083
