Vehicle Detail
This is a good example of a great bike. EVERYTHING works and it's ready to ride. Though cosmetically just OK -- it sat on the former owner's back patio for a year or two -- it's mechanically excellent with stainless brake lines, a stock exhaust system in excellent shape and a full service just completed: fresh oil and filter, new plugs, timing check, new air filter, carbs cleaned and adjusted, brakes serviced, cables checked and lubed and new engine coolant. It comes with battery charger pigtail (battery is OK but this is its last season) Hondaline saddle bags, tail trunk, optional rear seat and includes u-install 'em rear crash bars. note that the hideous stock "rototiller" bars have been replaced with a nice touring bend (see pix 3 & 4) since some of these fotos were taken, making the bike a far more pleasant ride... I got the bike as part of a two-bike deal, and had to replace the starter clutch roller and springs to make it run, so while the engine was out -- I'm an M/C mechanic of more than 30 years experience and I specialize in vintage Ducatis, so the CX motor was well within my skill set -- I took the opportunity to do the much vaunted "triple bypass" and replaced starter clutch rollers and springs; water pump seal; checked the stator (fine); checked the cam chain and tensioner (also in perfect condition); and cleaned, lubed and adjusted the ignition advance unit, so the bike is good to go. It'll soon need a battery, as I said, and tires for next season, but there's no better $1200 bike on the Bay -- if I didn't already have one, I'd keep it... here's a walkaround/startup video of the bike: https://youtu.be/udMoSHl8oZo and an appreciation from anothe GL650 fan: https://www.ericpetersautos.com/2011/03/24/the-one-year-wonder-and-why/ Yes, the 650 Silverwing looks like a CX/GL 500, but this one-year only model is significantly changed and improved over the 500 while maintaining the unique - high cam/splayed cylinder architecture of the CX line. It's got 674cc compared to 500cc and makes 30 percent more power: 64hp, and it makes that power at lower revs for better cruising, which the taller final drive ratio also helps...the 650 gets better gas mileage than the 500 and the extra horses make it a far better mid-range tourer. Internally, the engine is beefier with bigger rods, rod bolts, main bearings, a bigger sump and transmission gears that are 30 percent thicker, making the bulletproof CX500 engine truly bombproof too.
