Vehicle Detail
***NOTE*** This car is currently NOT DRIVEABLE ! -- FOR REPAIR OR PARTS ! My 2001 Jaguar has been sitting in my garage for the past 4 years or so, looking forlorn ! Back then, one day, I started it up a couple of miles away from home. The engine gave a sort of groan, and started running with a brruppp brruppp brruppp bruppp sound, like a John Deere tractor. The check engine light came on with all sorts of flashing warnings. I drove slowly home engine at idle. The many engine codes indicated that the passenger side bank was not operating. No kidding! I immediately knew what all this meant - the infamous Jaguar Secondary Camshaft Drive Tensioner Failure. The camshafts on this car are chain driven. If a tensioner fails, one of the overhead camshafts slips out of time with respect to the other one, by one, two , or more teeth. As I understand it, if the slippage is one tooth, the engine runs very rough. If it slips two or more teeth, you get bent valves and/or damaged pistons. In my case, I THINK, but I do not KNOW, that my engine (and just the passenger side) has slipped by just one tooth. I believe this to be the case because, when the engine started, it did not make any loud banging or hammering noise, and kept running. If it is a one-tooth slippage, then the repair involves new tensioners and some gaskets, and could be done by a do-it-yourselfer for maybe a few hundred $$. If the valves are bent, the afflicted cylinder head could be replaced for maybe close to a thousand. If any of the pistons are holed, then it is probably several thousand dollars anyway -- in which case maybe best to part out the car. I had been going to replace the tensioners before this happened, but "didn't get around to it." And after the fact, I haven't gotten around to a repair either. Too many projects on my list .... SOOO... I am selling this car, either to be repaired or for parts. If it doesn't sell on eBay, I am going to donate it to a charity that accepts cars like this. As for condition: The exterior is fine, except for dust from sitting in my garage. No dents or rust or body rot. There is a minor scuff on the right rear bumper, not a dent (see picture). The interior is beige leather, in good shape. The little lights around the shift quadrant had burned out, and I was in the process of fixing that when the engine trouble happened. I have had a trickle charger on it all this time, so the battery is presumably good. But I have not tried to restart the car. Before all this happened, I had rebuilt the ABS controller to fix a persistent ABS error light. Buyer must arrange for any shipping or (preferably) come get the car. It is in western Massachusetts, north of Springfield. Since the car is not running, it will need to be winched up onto a flatbed. I don't think it can go up onto the usual automotive semi-trailer car-carrier rig. Happy to answer any questions. When it was running, it was sweet. Maybe someone else can get it roadworthy again. USA customers only, please. On Apr-12-17 at 18:41:59 PDT, seller added the following information: Someone asked for more details regarding the body condition. This car originally came from South Carolina. I never drove it up here in the Winter, so it has not seen any road salt. Every Winter, it would get parked behind my house, under a cover. And as far as I can see, there is no rust or rot. On Apr-12-17 at 21:52:00 PDT, seller added the following information: I just noticed that under "Shipping and Payments," it said the car was in Lexington MA. That was 6 years ago ! Now in zip code 01073, Southampton MA. On Apr-17-17 at 06:57:38 PDT, seller added the following information: I was recently contacted by a potential bidder about the possibility of storing the vehicle on my property for an extended period, before pickup. There are legal and practical issues with this (I want to free up my garage space), and after some further consideration I ask that anyone who cannot get the car or get it shipped within two weeks or so after the auction closes, PLEASE DO NOT BID !!
