Vehicle Detail

OVERVIEW: This 1972 Karmann Ghia convertible was originally a Texas car, with time spent in Idaho. It was imported into Canada from Idaho, USA in 2007, and still retains its State of Idaho Title Certificate. The car passed and was issued an Alberta Out of Province Vehicle Inspection Certificate that same year. The car was last registered in Alberta in 2010. Odometer reading at time of inspection in 2007 was 61,982 miles. Owner subsequently changed out the speedo for one in better condition, which shows 16,501 miles, but the original speedometer will go with the car. It bears serial number 1422136056, tag is located under the rear seat. It has been in the possession of the same owner since 2007, and had some front end work done to ensure roadworthiness. It appears not to have suffered the ravages of winter, salted roads, or rust issues. This would be typical of a car from the dry climates of Texas, Idaho and Alberta. It is also in good running order with good brakes and tires. This listing provides many more details as you scroll thru. At the bottom of this listing you will find a link to a photo album of 79 pics. DRIVETRAIN: The engine starts easily, sounds good, runs smooth, and does not smoke. The engine compartment is basically clean and tidy. The gearbox shifts as it should, the clutch displays no slippage or chatter. The undersides of the engine and gearbox show some minor oil weeping but there are no serious leaks or puddles left on the floor. UNDERCARRIAGE AND SUSPENSION: The undercarriage merely displays the road dust and dirt of its miles and appears as original equipment. The all original steel tub and floor pans appear solid with no rot or rust out issues. Paperwork in the file indicates new parts installed in 2007 as follows: 1 lower ball joint, 2 upper ball joints, and 2 tie rod ends, followed by a wheel alignment. Inspection report indicates steering, suspension, exhaust, and brake systems, along with all mechanicals, to be in good condition. The running tires are like new and have virtually no miles on them. They are a matched set of 165/80R15 (87T rated) Kumho PowerStar 758 blackwall radials mounted on nice chrome rims. BODY & PAINT: All indications are that it has never been abused or suffered the ravages of winters and salt. Overall this is a very solid car, the body and sheet metal are quite straight. There is a scrape with very minor dent on the right quarter, above and forward of the wheel, resulting in a crack of some filler. The filler does not appear thick or covering a rust issue, it appears to be a levelling skim. There is no sign of rust or rust repairs on any of the wheel wells or inner wells. There is one very tiny blister at the forward bottom corner of the right door skin. The only other place is a couple of small blisters on the left rocker, below and back of the bottom rear corner of the left door. Otherwise the rockers are quite clean and solid, as are the bottoms of both doors. The forward trunk area and pan is totally solid and original, no signs of rust or collision damage. The engine bay pan shows an overlay patch on the left side between the center latch and partially under the battery, reason unknown. The metallic green paint is pretty smooth and retains good shine. There are some blemishes here and there, such as minor chips, very light scratches, a scuff above the right front wheel, and some drip splatters on the hood. The scuff, light scratches and splatters would buff out with a good polishing, which would also enhance the finish nicely. Unless you’re seeking total perfection this car does not need to be repainted. ELECTRICAL: A new wiring harness was installed by the previous owner and the paperwork for that is still with the car. A new NAPA battery has just been added. Equipped with a nice aftermarket in-car heater. There is also a 150 watt amplifier and a sub-woofer mounted behind the back seat, but there is no radio or stereo. Gas gauge works, horn and wipers do not, clock unknown. Headlamps, parking lights, left tail light work, right tail light burnt out. None of the plastic lenses are cracked or broken, but the right park lamp and both tail lamp lenses have crazing. INTERIOR AND TOP: It has a cloth interior and a new carpet kit was installed over very solid and clean floor pans. Original VW seat belts for 5 passengers. Has a new dash pad and a custom Grant GT steering wheel. The sun visors were removed but come with the car. The headliner is dirty and fit is unfinished at the rear corners. Possibly missing rear interior side panels. The windscreen has one small star chip, otherwise it’s in good condition. The right door window has 3 blemish spots etched into the glass, the left door has one. The rear glass is good, but the latch needs adjustment to tighten its fit. The top is intact but likely not the original. It has tears only at the bottom corners of the rear window. Top latches work properly, bows appear intact and work up and down smoothly. BRIGHTWORK: The black painted bumpers are not original. The head lamp rings, as well as the chrome trim surrounding the park and tail lights are all in very nice condition and have no pitting. Door handles also not pitted. The short stainless upper spears on both front fenders are not on the car, but there is one loose with the spare parts. There is a new emblem on the right front fender, and another new one in with the parts. There is also a new VW emblem and a Karmann Ghia script with the parts. Beltline stainless door trim missing from right door. No antenna in left front fender. Receipt indicates new left and right door mirrors were purchased, right one on door, left one not mounted. There is also a spare. The car sports nice original VW chrome hub caps. SUMMARY: Included are some misc. spare parts, in which there are some new weather seals, and some pieces of new padding and carpeting, these possibly go to the sides of the rear seat, not sure. Having only spent time with it during his first 3 years of ownership, and now needing space and having other interests and priorities, the owner has decided to offer this car with a reasonable reserve below $5K. It’s a solid car that you can play with without having to incur major expenditures, while restoring or customizing to your own tastes over time.
