Vehicle Detail
With a face only a mother could love, this '72 bullnose convertible will make an excellent project. Purchased a couple years back, but like the story told thousands of times before me--I lack the time and know-how this little beauty needs. AMC 304 V8 with 3speed manual and 4x4. Rust on the rockers, but otherwise in pretty good shape. Solid motor, clutch, and drivetrain. New tires, fuel pump, water pump, and hoses. I don't know the mileage it is exempt on the tittle, but odometer reads 52k. Just passed Colorado emissions last year after a carburetor re-jetting that traded power for cleaner emissions. The remaining work I had planned was the steering gear box and heater core. Wipers, headlights, and all dash gauges work-- a bit of a rareity if you look at project commandos. It breaks my heart to sell this gem, but will make a fantastic project with the right jeeper. On Oct-06-16 at 17:58:10 PDT, seller added the following information: With a face only a mother could love, this '72 bullnose convertible will make an excellent project. The top is all steel and glass so it is a multiple person job or some sort of pulley assist. Q: Does it run? A: Yes, it runs great. I was driving from castle rock down to colorado springs weekly/biweekly during the summer months. I run it up to 70mph with no problems going down the interstate. Before the carburetor re-jetting, the little 304 was a beast and had plenty of peddle to spare, but limited it to 70 because these jeeps do not have tachometers and its only a 3 speed. After the re-jetting she doesn't have as much power as she did, but can absolutely still make it up to highway speeds. I had collector plates so the emissions are only once every 5 years - can't say I wasn't tempted to reject it back to the stock settings in between emissions test, but never did to keep her legal. Q: Any leaks?A: Yes, small slow oil drip. I had a mechanic check it out when I first picked her up, he said that there was a small drip from the main. I have never had to top off the oil between changes. It was parked while I was deployed for 7 months and there was roughly a 1 inch by 3 inch dry - light oil spot on the ground. It passes emissions and does not emit smoke from the tail pipe, so I've never worried about replacing the seals / gaskets. Q: Why Steering Gear Box?A: There is a few inches of play in the steering wheel, but is driveable upto highway speeds with no issues. Tires are new and the alignment is good (minus the play in the steering wheel) so there is no hard pulling in any direction. Q: Why Heater core?A: Heater blows luke warm. Fan works great, but I suspect the original heater core is cracked or rotten inside. Q: Any more rust than the rockers? Bondo?A: Yes - I didn't intend to make it seem like the rockers were the only rusty parts on this, there is spot rust on the tail gate and in various parts of the body. Rockers are the only part that have bondo because they are rusted thru. I know of atleast 1 website that carries new rocker pannels for these commando's -- I'm not a body guy or a welder so I never got to this. There is 1 rust thru spot in floor in the back by the spare tire in the cargo area. The other areas of the floor pan are solid, it only happend behind the right rear tire well where I suspect the de-icer they spray on roads in colorado had something to do with it. I have added photos to zoom up on the tail gate rust and the one rust thru spot in the back cargo area. Q: Am I including anything with it not pictured?A: Yes - I am including a reprint of the dealer service manual that will walk you through all services and most repairs, as well as a chilton's repair manual. Additionally, I am including 70's / 80's era ski roof racks that still lock and I have the key for. There is a functional CB (80's era) that is wired under the dash, don't think it made the photos - it does need a new antenna, I broke that off on an elk hunt. Lastly I am including my Waylon Jenning 8 track-- that hurts the most. No one asked but wanted to say that someone before me put in an aftermarket AM/FM 8 track player - the radio works, but don't expect HD. The 8 track plays, but can act up. Mostly those were off as I wanted to keep an ear on my RPM's and soundz of the motor. This is a project, but a great Jeep. I can only think of one time when it didn't start and that was an easy $50 fuel pump fix. I have taken it to grand junction / utah border and tooled around on some easy/moderate mountain trails and forest service road a couple years back on an elk hunt -- while fully loaded with gear, which is around 250-300 miles each way; probably around 750 - 1000 miles for the week, and had no issues. I would have no hesitation to make that run again. The 4x4 worked great, it took the snow and mud on the trails with ease.
