Vehicle Detail
This auction is for a 2011 Honda CR-Z EX finished in Milano Red with the gray interior. The CR-Z is powered by a hybrid gasoline-electric powertrain (hence the name Hybrid) consisting of an all aluminum 1.5 liter 4 cylinder VTEC engine used in the Honda Fit, coupled to a battery powered electric motor known as the Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) used in the Insight. Power is then routed to a 6-speed manual transmission that drives the front wheels. This powertrain combined with a light weight body, excellent aerodynamics and numerous gas saving features, allows the CR-Z to get great gas mileage as well as have sports car feel and handling. A hybrid powertrain combines the best features of two different propulsion systems into one integrated seamless powerplant. An internal combustion engine produces little power and torque at idle and low engine speeds but greater power as the RPMs increase. An electric motor on the other hand puts out its maximum torque at ZERO rpm. What that means is you can utilize the maximum torque output of the electric motor when accelerating from a stop, and the greater power output of the gas engine at higher RPMs for cruising at highway speeds, or any combination of both at speeds in between, to optimize both acceleration and fuel economy. Additional benefits of this system are regenerative braking that makes use of energy that other cars waste while braking and coasting by recharging the battery pack, and engine cut-off at stop lights when other cars are wasting gas idling. The CR-Z’s layout consists of a 10-killowatt 22-pound thin electric motor sandwiched between the engine and transmission to boost the car’s performance when needed. During coasting and braking the motor also serves as a generator (a.k.a. regenerative braking) to recharge a 100 volt nickel-metal hydride battery pack located below the spare tire. Think of this IMA system as a supercharger that provides additional performance without using much energy, and in fact, because it recovers the CR-Z’s momentum to recharge the battery pack, it’s more efficient than any supercharger could ever be. The engine doesn’t have an alternator. The IMA keeps the high voltage battery pack charged and an inverter powers most 12 volt electricals including keeping the 12V battery charged, which itself is mainly used just to power up the IMA control modules when you first turn the key. The other key component of this CR-Z’s powertrain is the 6-speed manual transmission. It uses widely spaced gears for maximizing engine output that provides brisk acceleration from a stoplight, while a high top gear ratio allows for effortless highway cruising. In addition, the CR-Z has a 3-mode adjustable drive system. In NORMAL mode you have a good balance between all-out performance and maximum economy and is visualized by a blue theme in the center gauge pod. When the ECONOMY mode is selected, rapid acceleration is exchanged for increased gas mileage and a green theme is displayed. And lastly, when in SPORT mode, there is greater throttle sensitivity, increased road feel from the steering wheel and more assistance from the electric motor while a red theme is highlighted. The CR-Z has a few other tweaks to save fuel including an extensive use of composite materials and lighter weight high strength steel structural components to give it a light 2,600 pound curb weight, aerodynamic clam-shell door handles, two mini front spoilers and air dams along with numerous underbody panels which give the car a drag coefficient of just 0.30 (one of the lowest in it’s class), electrically assisted power steering that reduces parasitic losses on the engine, and probably the best feature, an idle shutoff mode called Auto Stop that turns off the engine as you come to a stop and provides you with an eerie silence at most every traffic light. Quite soothing after a long day at the office. The IMA automatically restarts the engine the instant you put the transmission in gear. The IMA starts the engine most of the time, and in fact, you may go for years without ever using the conventional 12 volt starter. About the only time the 12V starter is used is if the IMA battery is discharged from the car sitting a few months. Not only is the CR-Z economical to drive, it’s also economical to maintain. Most systems have low or reduced maintenance components. For example, instead of a timing belt that needs periodic replacement, the CR-Z engine uses a steel timing chain that should last the life of the car. It uses iridium tipped spark plugs with 100,000 mile service intervals, extended life coolant with a 120,000 mile service interval, and a fuel filter that never needs servicing. The oil capacity for the small 1.5 liter engine is just 4 quarts so even full synthetic oil changes are under $40. And the CR-Z has a Maintenance Minder™ indicator that calculates the optimum service intervals based on how the car is driven and illuminates a light on the dash when routine service is due. A car driven primarily on the highway requires less maintenance than one subject to city use with constant stopping and starting, and so, oil changes may not be required for 8,000 or 10,000 miles. While the CR-Z doesn’t cost much to drive or maintain, it’s also well built and very reliable. While the oldest CR-Z is just 5 years old so there aren’t many with over 200,000 miles on them yet, the Honda Fit which has the same engine has many owners with 200,000 and 300,000 plus miles still running well, and there was a courier in Dallas with over 500,000 miles on his ‘07 Fit back in 2014! Who knows where it’s at now. The biggest concern to many hybrid car buyers is the battery pack. In reality, there is little reason to worry too much about the battery pack wearing out on an CR-Z. First of all, unlike other Hybrids like Toyota’s Prius where the battery is integral to the powertrain, such that if it quits the car is undriveable, on the CR-Z, that is not an issue. The CR-Z battery pack can be disconnected and the car driven indefinitely in that condition. Remember, the Integrated Motor Assist is just an assist, like a supercharger. In steady highway driving and other driving situations that don’t require lots of power, you would be hard pressed to tell that there was anything unusual if the battery was disconnected, and the gas mileage would be nearly identical as with the battery connected. The only situation where mileage might drop is in city driving where the Auto Stop feature would be disabled, and even then, the reduction in mileage would be minimal. After all, it’s still a 1.5 liter powered low weight aerodynamic car. The battery and entire IMA system has an excellent factory warranty that lasts up to 15 years or 150,000 miles for cars registered and normally operated in the states of California, Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont. The in-service date for this CR-Z was April 1, 2011. In all other states, that warranty is for 8 years or 100,000 miles on the battery and specific components of the IMA system. Contact a Honda dealer for details. And in addition to the battery and IMA, an extensive list of related mechanical components for cars in those mentioned states also have their warranty coverage bumped up to 15 years/150K miles including catalytic converters, ignition coils and spark plugs, engine computer, fuel injectors, pressure regulator, fuel tank and filter, evaporative emissions canister, valves and lines, knock and oxygen sensors, MAP sensor, accelerator pedal module, EGR valve and pipe, throttle body, MAF sensor, intake manifold, etc. CLICK HERE to see the warranty coverage. The Honda CR-Z can be seen as a combination of the much beloved CRX of the ‘80’s but updated for the 21st century, combined with the first generation Insight. These cars share stubby rear ends, dual pane rear glass, two-seat layouts and frugal intentions. And while the CR-Z sold in the USA is a two seater, in other countries it’s sold as a 2+2 with seating in the rear, albeit for children and short people. The USA model still has a vestigial rear seat that can only be used for cargo since there are no seat belts. Some people have bought and installed the rear seat and belts from foreign junk yards that have wrecked CR-Z’s, so it is possible to do a retrofit. If you are into being green, then besides getting great gas mileage, the CR-Z is also certified by CARB (California Air Resources Board) to be an Advanced Technology Partial Zero Emission Vehicle (AT-PZEV). And you don’t give up anything in comfort and room with the CR-Z. Headroom and legroom is plenty for all but the tallest basketball players and there is no claustrophobic feeling like you get in some other small cars. Driving it is also no different as it accelerates and merges into traffic with ease and keeps up with 80 mph highway speeds without breaking a sweat. In many states, the CR-Z may be eligible for numerous perks such as being able to drive alone in the HOV carpool lanes without a passenger, being exempt from annual emissions inspections, free or reduced parking rates at downtown or airport parking lots, etc. Check your state or local government for more details. Its exterior style is very unique, combining sleek form with aerodynamic function. From its stylish lines and sweeping curves, it incorporates numerous design elements to create a look that is like no other car on the road. From up front, it has a contoured bumper incorporating fog lights with black honeycomb bezels and a matching grill along with clear lens projector beam HID (High Intensity Discharge) bi-xenon headlights. Going back, there is a wide hood transitioning to a steeply raked windshield, and along the sides, wide fenders flow into sweeping curves by the doors with body colored clam-shell door handles and body color mirrors incorporating chic euro style secondary turn signal lights. On the roof a low profile body color shark-fin antenna adds another euro touch. Then, going back, the cars’ lines meld into a nearly horizontal rear window followed by a vertical secondary window with a short fastback hatch lid surrounded by oversize LED taillights. At the back, the bumper has a charcoal gray diffuser with honeycomb inserts to accentuate the rear styling. The car looks futuristic from any angle without being flashy. But if you like high tech design, you will really like the interior. Open the door, step inside and sit down into a firm and supportive sport seat. Raise or lower the seat with the side lever and then adjust the steering wheel in or out and up or down for the perfect driving position. Next, look ahead at the dashboard and electroluminescent instrument cluster with the large easy to read tach and digital speedometer front and center with auxiliary gauges on both sides. Grab the thick leather wrapped steering wheel and see the cruise control, voice recognition and infotainment switches are just a fingertip away, as are the various control buttons and displays contained in the pods on either side. The seats are exceptionally comfortable, the materials inside are first-rate, and the view out the windshield is broad. Notice high quality checkerboard fabric covering the seats, the brushed aluminum trim on the dash and door panels and black mesh accents on the steering wheel and console. Not only is the styling attractive, but all the textures have a rich feel and look and all the switchgear have a precise soft touch action. From the stitching of the leather wrapped steering wheel, the graining pattern on the dash and door panels, or the layout of the knobs and switches on the dash, everything looks and feels like it came from a more expensive car. The CR-Z is a low production automobile that you don’t see every day. If you’re tired of the bland cookie-cutter shape of all the common Toyotas, Nissans and Hyundais on the road today, this car will appeal to you. This CR-Z EX is fully equipped with all the desirable safety, comfort and convenience features and equipment including: 1.5 liter 4 cylinder VTEC gas engine with Auto Stop mode Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) electric motor 6-speed manual transmission with Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) traction control Rollback Protection, Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) 3-Mode drive system: Normal, Sport and Economy Air conditioning with automatic electronic climate control and cabin air filter Power windows with drivers express down Power door locks Factory touch-screen navigation and 360 watt sound system with Bluetooth®, voice command, CD/MP3/WMA Auxilliariy input jack and USB port for external devices Seven speakers including year subwoofer Eurostyle roof mounted shark-fin antenna Remote keyless entry Cruise control with steering wheel mounted switches Tilt and telescoping steering column Leather wrapped steering wheel 6-way adjustable drivers seat Two-tone Sport cloth interior Aluminum pedals Leather wrapped shift knob Electroluminescent instrument cluster with tachometer, digital speedometer, and multi-function displays for instant and average fuel mileage, two trip odometers, etc. Center console with two front and one rear cup holders and two storage compartments 12V power outlet Tinted glass Clear lens projector beam HID (High Intensity Discharge) bi-xenon headlights Fog lights with black honeycomb bezels Intermittent wipers Rear window wiper and washer Dome light with driver and passenger map lights Secondary turn signal lights in outside rear view mirrors Dual power heated body color outside rear view mirrors Body color clam-shell door handles Dual illuminated visor vanity mirrors Engine immobilizer theft deterrent system Bright finish aluminum wheels Air conditioned locking glovebox Carpeted factory floor mats Fold-down “rear seat” back for flat cargo floor Dual “rear seat” reading lamps Cargo area light Retractable cargo cover Child seat strap anchor Rear window defroster Rear mini spoiler Rear diffuser Electrically assisted rack and pinion power steering (EPS) Tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) 4 wheel disc anti-lock brakes Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) Dual-stage front airbags Side airbags Head curtain airbags And many more items too numerous to mention. It has a beautiful dent-free body and even after walking around the car twice, I couldn’t find a single door ding or paint scratch. The paint itself is fantastic and this shade of bright red would be the envy of even a Ferrari owner. It has been cleaned with Meguiar’s Smooth Surface Clay System, polished with Meguiar’s Mirror Glaze cleaner polish and topped off with Meguiar’s Ultimate Synthetic Wax for a high gloss shine. All the glass, moldings, trim and emblems are excellent, I checked the car out top to bottom and found no evidence that is was ever wrecked. In fact, it still has the original VIN stickers on all body panels. Remember, it’s hard enough to find a two year old or 30,000 mile vehicle that hasn’t had at least a fender-bender requiring a bumper, hood or fender to be replaced or repaired. Front bumper: Hood: Left fender: Right fender: Left door: Right door: Left quarter panel: Right quarter panel: Rear hatch: Rear bumper: In addition, this CR-Z has all it’s underbody panels installed. If a mechanic forgets to replace a panel after an oil change or you run over a curb and break one off, your gas mileage may suffer as the aerodynamics under a car are just as important as above it. If you are looking at other CR-Z’s for sale as well, check underneath and make sure all the following panels are still intact as they are not cheap to replace. Front underbody panel: Center underbody panel: Rear underbody panels: Right mini spoiler and air deflector: Left mini spoiler and air deflector: The interior is in great condition as well and included are a pair of factory floor mats. It has excellent upholstery, dashboard and door panels with no cracks, rips or tears or any significant signs of wear. The car doesn‘t appear to have been smoked in. In fact, it’s not even equipped with a lighter. The cargo area looks like it was never used and the engine compartment has been fully detailed and is clean enough to eat off of. Mechanically it runs and drives excellent. The engine runs strong and feels smooth while accelerating and throughout the cruising range and it starts instantly whether hot or cold. The steering wheel is on dead center going down the road with no shakes or vibrations at speed, the brakes are firm with no pedal pulsations or pulling to one side when stopping and the suspension is tight. The clutch is feather light and buttery smooth while the precise shifter action lets you flick off shifts with just your finger tips. The A/C blows ice cold. It has a new set of four identical Dunlop SP Sport 7000 tires. These tires combine a high performance tread design, exceptional all-season wet/dry traction, extended comfort, excellent handling and superior tread life. They have been balanced with coated stick-on balance weights mounted on the inside of the wheel for a super clean look. These weights won’t corrode and turn ugly like cheap uncoated weights. The spare tire doesn’t look like it has ever been used. In total, this CR-Z looks, runs and drives just as nice as any 30,000 mile example you will find. A very well kept 30,000 mile example I have to add. It has been dealer serviced almost exclusively and over 20 service records are contained in the Carfax report further down in the description. The car has been fully checked out and serviced with over $2,400 worth of new or recent parts, maintenance and repairs with original Honda or other name brand parts so that only your enjoyment rather than your immediate attention will be required on delivery. Some of the items checked or serviced include: New Mobil 1 0W-20 synthetic oil change New Honda oil filter New Honda air filter New Honda cabin air filter New throttle body cleaning New MAF sensor cleaning New OEM NGK laser iridium spark plugs New valve adjustment New OEM Bando serpentine belt New coolant flush with distilled water New Honda Long Life Type 2 (blue) coolant change Recent front brake pads Recent front brake rotors Recent rear brake pads Recent rear brake rotors New parking brake adjustment New Valvoline Dot 4 Synthetic brake fluid flush and change New Honda manual transmission fluid change New Valvoline Dot 4 Synthetic clutch fluid flush and change New MAS right sway bar link New set of four Dunlop SP Sport 7000 tires Photos of some of the parts replaced, checked or serviced: Parts replaced: Oil change: Oil filter: Air filter: Cabin air filter: Throttle body cleaning: MAF sendor cleaning: Spark plugs with the proper amount of anti-seize on the threads: Valve adjustment: Engine SUPER CLEAN internally: Serpentine belt: Coolant flushed until water is clear from the radiator: Front brake pads: Front brake rotors: 21 mm new, 19 mm minimum thickness: Front brakes: Rear brake pads: Rear brake rotors: 9 mm new, 8 mm minimum thickness: Rear brakes: Parking brake adjustment: Brake fluid flush and change: Transmission: Transmission fluid change: Clutch fluid flush and change: Right stabilizer bar link: Other than routine oil and filter changes, with all the above mentioned servicing the car has recently received, you should be good to go for another 100,000 miles before requiring major maintenance. Overall this is a super sharp car that looks absolutely fantastic in this Milano Red color. If you’re going to buy a car in general and a CR-Z specifically, you might as well get the hottest possible color they made. Sure, blue is nice, silver and white are good if a bit bland, and Black is great just hard to keep clean, but only this shade of red really catches everyone’s eye. Remember, as you step out of your home every day, and as you set eyes on your CR-Z, there is nothing like a bright red car to get you feeling excited about your day ahead. You’ll probably be driving this car for a few years, so just ask yourself, would you rather wake up every morning to a Milano Red CR-Z, or just some other color you “settled” for. And you’re sure to get many questions and complements about it at the mall or supermarket parking lot from total strangers. If you don’t want attention, or if you are the least bit shy, don’t buy this car, I warn you. The cost new of this CR-Z was over $23,000! CLICK HERE to see the original pricing. But because it was a hot new model, most dealers were adding additional market adjustment markups (read rip off), so with tax, title and tags, you were lucky if you got ANY change back from your $25,000 bill! It’s a one owner southern car from Maryland which probably explains why it’s so clean. CLICK HERE to see the title. Plus it has a clean and clear Carfax. CLICK HERE to see the Carfax. Note that the car is subject to the airbag inflator recall but the part has not been made available yet. Honda expects it in by mid summer. In the mean time, you may be eligible to get a free rental car until the part does come in. Contact your local Honda dealer for terms and conditions. The car comes with all the books: Two factory remote keys: A set of factory carpeted floor mats: And a front license plate bracket if you need it: 2011 was the first year of the new CR-Z and is the best value since it’s nearly identical to a new 2016 model, but being five years old, the majority of the depreciation has been absorbed by the previous owner, yet the car still looks and runs like new. Since 2011 was the first year the CR-Z was sold, it’s the oldest, and thus, the least expensive CR-Z you can buy. What that means is you can own a car with the looks, style and prestige of a brand new CR-Z for a fraction of the cost. In fact, because of the above average mileage, this CR-Z may be the cheapest one you will find until a few years of depreciation have reduced the prices of other CR-Z’s to the level of this one. It could be a while before that happens, so if you’ve always wanted a CR-Z but thought you didn’t quite have enough funds to purchase one, this car may just have your name on it. In other words, it’s going to take a year or two before the other lower mileage CR-Z’s that are advertised now for $12,000 to $14,000 depreciate down to the price of this CR-Z. So why wait that long? In a year or two their prices will be the same as this one is right now anyway, so you might as well own and enjoy it now! If you are serious about buying a CR-Z in general, and a loaded EX 6-speed model specifically, this is about as low as they go in this nice condition because of the higher mileage. Remember, you can get a great deal on Ebay with prices sometimes way below retail, but no bidder is going to “steal” a vehicle and no seller is going to give one away either. Also when comparing prices, remember the things that you won’t have to spend money on soon after getting it home. With this car you won’t have to spend $1,000 or more on paint or bodywork to fix scratched bumpers or a dented panel, you won’t have to spend $500 for a new set of tires, you won’t have to spend $400 on a complete front brake service, you won’t have to spend $400 on a complete rear brake service, you won’t have to spend $300 on a coolant and brake flush, you won’t have to spend $300 on a tune-up and filters service, and you won’t have to spend $300 on a valve adjustment or any upcoming scheduled maintenance. With many of the other listings on Ebay, Craigslist or on dealers lots, you’re lucky if they even check the oil before delivery. Also, when comparing this CR-Z to the others listed, keep in mind that this car was never in an accident, has a clean Carfax, runs excellent, is fully serviced, hasn’t been smoked in and is clean inside and out. Lastly, check if they come with both remote keys because a new one from the dealer, with programming, is going to cost you $200. And if you lost that only key, it’ll cost three times as much to replace the security module. If you are looking for an all original CR-Z in beautiful condition at a good price, then this car is hard to beat. It is bone stock unlike many of these CR-Z’s out there that are extensively modified with sometimes questionable mods, both in terms of quality and taste. So whether you like your car all original like this one is, or like to modify it correctly, this car is the blank canvas you can start with knowing you won’t have to correct another persons mistakes or poor taste. Also remember that we don’t charge dealer processing fees or document fees that many other listings have for $200 or more and bury in their fine print. And don’t be fooled by some other auctions that are advertised as NO RESERVE and start at $100 or some other low price. Since no dealer is going to risk losing thousands of dollars if their auction doesn’t bring enough money, you can be pretty sure he has some “people” bidding on it for him. Especially those auctions that are private listings where it says “User ID kept private.” Also, because my reserve is close to the Buy It Now price, don’t think that you will get a much better deal if you just keep bidding it up instead of using B.I.N., especially if you need it delivered. TERMS OF THE AUCTION ARE AS FOLLOWS: Since this car may be advertised locally, auction can be canceled at any time (unless auction ended early with BUY IT NOW) due to prior sale without liability to any bidder. A down payment of $500 (plus any additional delivery charge) is required within 3 days of the close of the auction, balance due in cash on delivery or certified funds on delivery if I deliver it or you pick it up, or before it’s dropped off at the transporter if a shipping company is transporting it, but no later than 7 days after the close of the auction without prior agreement. I accept bank or certified checks, money orders, credit cards through PayPal (accepted for down payment only). If paying balance with funds other than cash, buyer to fax copy of monetary instrument no less than 24 hours before picking up vehicle. The car is sold as is but still has the balance of the manufacturers warranties as previously mentioned. Buyer is welcome to inspect car BEFORE the end of the auction or to have someone check it out on your behalf provided you authorize whoever is checking the car to provide me with a copy of the results. I have tried to accurately describe this car, both mechanically and cosmetically but you can expect a certain amount of minor flaws on ANY used car including squeaks, rattles, drips, nicks, chips, scratches, blemishes and any other marks that are consistent with the age and mileage of the vehicle. There is no possible way to include all minute details and imperfections, however, I believe my listing accurately depicts this vehicle and if there are any issues they are noted in the description. Also remember that a vehicle is made up of thousands of mechanical parts and components and in an older or higher mileage used vehicle a part that is working fine now may go bad the next day, in a week, or a month from now. It’s nearly impossible to tell when a particular part or component will fail as most don’t exhibit prior symptoms, however, proper preventative maintenance as this car has received, can prevent most problems or breakdowns from happening. In fairness to all bidders the reserve price will not be disclosed so please don’t even ask. Buyer responsible for transportation and car must be paid for in full before it can be released. May deliver. Email or call for delivery quote or for any other questions. atikovi@email.com Maryland and District of Columbia dealer. Phone 202-246-5201. Please do not bid if you don’t intend to buy. FREE DELIVERY TERMS: Free delivery within 300 miles of the Washington DC area if bidder purchases vehicle with Buy It Now. (35 cents per mile for additional miles as shown in MapQuest.com from zip code 20001 to your address.) That is still the same rate as when I started on Ebay 16 years ago. Remember, the Buy It Now option disappears once the reserve price is met. The Buy It Now price is $8,295. AUCTION ENDS: 10:00pm sharp, EASTERN TIME Monday August 15th unless Buy It Now is used.On Aug-12-16 at 17:55:16 PDT, seller added the following information: Lowered the reserve and dropped the Buy It Now price under $8,000. This is the cleanest and most serviced CR-Z for the money you will find anywhere.
