Vehicle Detail

This auction is for a 2012 Smart Fortwo Passion Coupe with just 13,000 miles that has collision damage at the left front and left side, details of which, are further down in the description. The car runs and drives great and you can still drive it anywhere. It is finished in Rally Red with a Black Tridion® and has the Gray leather interior. It has all the options including Panoramic roof, leather seats, heated seats, paddle shifters, aluminum wheels, tachometer and clock, rain sense wipers, etc. 2008 was the first year that Smarts were sold in the USA, but they have been sold in Europe and the rest of the world for ten years prior to that, earning a reputation for quality and reliability after countless billions of miles on the road. 1.5 million Smart Fortwo cars were built as of 2013 and annual sales figures are strong. The design of the Smart was influenced by the Swiss watch maker Swatch®, whose CEO began developing an idea for a new small and stylish city car using the same type of manufacturing strategies and personalization features used to popularize Swatch watches. Initially, the car was known as the Swatchmobile. To share costs and manufacturing technology, Swatch partnered with Mercedes-Benz to implement production. The name Smart derives from Smart Mercedes ART. A factory was built in Hambach, France, just a few miles from the German border, and this is where Smarts are built to this day. A combination of chic French and Swiss style with renowned German engineering. The Smart Fortwo is powered by a rear mounted 1.0 liter 70 H.P. DOHC 12-valve 3 cylinder all aluminum engine made by Mitsubishi. Known as the 3B21, the engine is set at an angle to fit below the back cargo floor and features an aluminum engine block and head for light weight and maximum heat dissipation, cast iron cylinder liners for exceptional durability, dual overhead cams with MIVEC® (Mitsubishi Innovative Valve timing Electronic Control system) variable valve timing for maximum power output at all engine speeds, a steel timing chain for reduced maintenance instead of a rubber timing belt found in many other cars that need periodic replacement, multiport fuel injection for excellent gas mileage, drive by wire throttle for precise engine control and coil on plug (COP) ignition for reliability in all environmental conditions. This engine adds Japanese quality to the mix along with affordable parts and service goals that couldn’t have been met if a Mercedes manufactured engine was used. The engine is mated to a 5-speed automated manual transmission with manual mode and steering wheel mounted paddle shifters along with Electronic Traction Control (ETC). It combines the ease and comfort of driving an automatic transmission with the economy, sportiness and easier reparability of a manual transmission. In other words, it’s a lot easier and cheaper to replace a clutch on a manual transmission than it is to rebuild or replace an automatic transmission. The transmission is basically a regular manual gearbox, but there is no clutch pedal. In automatic mode, all shifting and clutch actuation is performed by a module controlling the shift motor and a clutch actuator. The feel is identical to that of a full manual transmission with the slight pause between gear shifts and slight engine revving during take off from a stop. It even has rollback protection with Hill-Assist Control (HAC) that keeps the brakes engaged for a second while you move your foot from the brake pedal to the accelerator. Besides automatic mode, there are two ways you can shift manually. You can use the paddle shifters on the steering wheel by pressing the right paddle to upshift or the left one to downshift. Also, you can move the shifter to the left from the “D” position into manual mode and then tap forward to upshift or rearward to downshift. Regardless, the transmission will always downshift to a lower gear if you slowdown and forget to do it yourself. And whenever manual mode is selected, the gear position, 1 thru 5, is shown in the multifunction display. It has a low first gear that provides brisk acceleration from a stop, while the high overdrive top gear allows for effortless highway cruising and great fuel economy. The traction control system uses the components from the ABS system and the electronic throttle to regulate engine torque to enhance traction with wheel slip of one tire of the vehicle being counteracted by applying brakes to that wheel, causing torque to be sent to the wheel with the most traction. Rounding out the Smart is a body built to last and a rigid chassis with steering, suspension and brake systems made for comfort as well as providing excellent handling, road feel and positive feedback. Smart body panels are made of a plastic composite that will never rust and that absorb minor impacts without getting dents like a metal car body would. The main structure of the car is composed of the Tridion® Safety Cell, which in addition to excellent safety characteristics, makes for an exceptionally stiff chassis for reduced body flex allowing excellent handling. Start with electric rack and pinion power steering for quick maneuvering and easy parking on congested city streets while still providing precise feedback at higher speeds and no parasitic drag that most engine powered steering systems have. Add a MacPherson strut suspension with a stabilizer bar up front along with coil springs and twin-tube dampers in the back for a smooth ride on rough city streets and a taught controlled ride on highways and twisting roads. Finish with front disc brakes for maximum fade resistance coupled with ABS for sure stops on all road surfaces and weather conditions, plus Electronic Brake Distribution that activates in emergency stopping situations. It’s been said that the Smart Fortwo is like driving a street legal go-cart every day. 70 horsepower may not seem like much, but since the car only weighs 1,800 pounds and rides on the shortest wheelbase of any car sold in America,  “fun to drive” is an understatement. Whether you’re battling bumper to bumper traffic downtown, or making time down a smooth interstate highway, the Smart Fortwo makes any drive something to look forward to. Lastly, the most important attribute of any car is safety, and the Smart Fortwo ranks high in government tests. Small size doesn’t have to equate with small protection. The main structure of the car known as the Tridion® Safety Cell is designed to activate the crumple zones of a colliding vehicle while creating a safety cell around the occupants. Numerous active, passive and preventive safety systems in addition to the Tridion® are incorporated including dual stage front airbags, side airbags, head curtain airbags, knee airbags, seatbelt pretensioners, anti-lock brakes, brake force distribution and stability control. In Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) tests, the 2008 Smart Fortwo, the smallest car marketed in the US market, earned the top overall rating of "Good" in both the front and side crash tests. The Fortwo received the "Good" score in 8 of 11 measured injury categories. Its seat/head restraints earned the second highest rating of "Acceptable" for protection against whiplash in rear impacts. In tests by NHTSA, the Fortwo received a 4 out 5 star rating for front impact to the driver and 5 out of 5 star safety rating for side impacts. The Smart Fortwo is safer than many much larger cars, and with it’s small footprint and excellent maneuverability, the Smart car often avoids accidents in the first place.   This Smart Fortwo is a fully equipped Passion model that has more standard equipment than the base Pure model and comes with all the desirable safety, comfort and convenience features and equipment including: 1.0L 3 cylinder engine 5-speed automated manual transmission with manual modes, Rollback Protection and Electronic Traction Control (ETC). FENDER MOUNTED TURN SIGNAL REPEATERS: PANORAMIC ROOF: RAIN SENSOR: NOVEMBER 2016 PENNSYLVANIA INSPECTIONS: KNEE AIRBAGS: SIDE AIRBAGS: PADDLE SHIFTERS: HEATED SEATS: MINI STORAGE POCKET: SUN SHADE: HEAD CURTAIN AIRBAGS: TAILGATE STORAGE: FOLD-DOWN PASSENGER SEATBACK: FRONT COVER IN SERVICE POSITION: TIRE INFLATOR AND SEALANT: This car has collision damage at the left front and the left side but no airbags were blown. I make no representation as to the cost to repair the damage but most Smart exterior panels are bolt-on parts that are readily available used on Ebay and self-service junkyards at reasonable prices. Even new parts from a Smart dealer are affordable considering most come color matched. All the dash warning lights come on when you first turn the ignition on and then they all go off like they are supposed to. It’s sold on a Pennsylvania salvage certificate, CLICK HERE to see the certificate, and has November 2016 PA inspection stickers. It still runs and drives great and you can drive it anywhere. I’ve put over 300 miles on it already, both on the highway and in town. That will increase during the auction as I’m still driving it. I just filled it up with gas so don’t expect a full tank on delivery. It has the original set of Kumho tires in very good condition. The steering wheel is on dead center going down the road with no shakes or vibrations at speed, the brakes are firm with no pedal pulsations or pulling to one side when stopping and the A/C blows ice cold. The rest of the body is excellent except the rear bumper has numerous small nicks and scratches. The exterior finish is beautiful and this shade of Rally Red just about glows in the sunlight. The paint as well as the Pano roof has been cleaned with Meguiar’s Smooth Surface Clay System, polished with Meguiar’s Mirror Glaze cleaner polish and topped off with Meguiar’s Ultimate Synthetic Wax for a high gloss shine. The interior is excellent too. The engine compartment is clean and the cargo area looks like its hardly ever been used. Smart has sold a majority of their cars in Europe because of the narrow roads, tight parking spaces and high gas prices. While not as common in the U.S., that can be a good thing if you don’t want a cookie cutter car that you see by the dozen at every mall or supermarket parking lot. If you like individuality, the Smart Fortwo is a good car to express that in. It’s styling is unique, with Euro-chic design combined with Teutonic flair combining to form an attractive and functional vehicle that looks stylish from any angle without being flashy. The first thing you notice is the overall size, or lack thereof, as the doors seem to span nearly the entire length of the car. The next thing you notice is the beautiful shade of red that would make a Ferrari owner jealous. Then you admire the euro-style touches that add a rich appearance such as the black honeycomb upper and lower grilles, fender mounted turn signal repeaters and shorty antenna. Open the door and step inside. Now take a deep breath and let your senses take in the rich aromatic scent of the fine leather seats, then notice the light and airy feeling you get, totally opposite of what you would expect in such a small car. Even 6 foot 5” drivers have enough head and legroom in the Fortwo. In fact, it has about the same legroom, and close to the headroom, of a Cadillac Escalade. The seats are exceptionally comfortable, the materials inside are first-rate, and the view out the windshield is panoramic. An abundance of light fills the cabin from the large panorama sunroof that stretches out to nearly all four corners of the roof. Grab the thick leather wrapped steering wheel and notice the paddle shifters are just a fingertip away. Next, look ahead at the dashboard and instrument cluster with the large easy to read speedometer with just MPH markings and the multifunction display below it and the twin gauge pads housing the tach and clock on top of the dash. Notice high quality pinpoint beige fabric covering the dash and the brushed aluminum accents throughout. Not only is the styling attractive, but all the textures have a rich feel and look and all the switchgear have a precise soft touch action. From the stitching of the leather wrapped steering wheel, the graining pattern on the dash and door panels, or the layout of the knobs and switches on the dash, everything looks and feels like it came from a more expensive car. It’s no wonder that in 2002, the New York Museum of Modern Art (MoMa) introduced a first generation Fortwo into its permanent collection (the only vehicle to be included into the collection while still in production). In 2011 the Smart Fortwo received it’s first cosmetic makeover with redesigned interiors and numerous exterior tweaks so that this 2012 model looks virtually identical to late model Fortwo’s up to 2015. And because of the body damage, this Fortwo will be the cheapest later model one you will find this well equipped and with this super low mileage. What that means is you can own a car with the looks and style of a late model Fortwo for a fraction of the cost. Also remember that we don’t charge dealer processing fees or document fees that many other listings have for $200 or more and bury in their fine print. And don’t be fooled by some other auctions that are advertised as NO RESERVE and start at $100 or some other low price. Since no dealer is going to risk losing thousands of dollars if their auction doesn’t bring enough money, you can be pretty sure he has some “people” bidding on it for him. Especially those auctions that are private listings where it says “User ID kept private.” Also, because my reserve is close to the Buy It Now price, don’t think that you will get a much better deal if you just keep bidding it up instead of using B.I.N., especially if you need it delivered. If you are looking for a very nice Smart Fortwo to rebuild in the most desirable color, in otherwise excellent condition, and at a good price, then this car is hard to beat. Sure, you can find many damaged 2008 and 2009 models with 40 to 80,000 miles but when it takes just as much work to put together a newer lower mileage example, it makes more sense to do this one. The more you start with, the farther you can go. Especially those auctions that are private listings where it says “User ID kept private.” Remember, you can get a great deal on Ebay with prices sometimes way below retail, but no bidder is going to “steal” a vehicle and no seller is going to give one away either. Also, because my reserve is close to the Buy It Now price, don’t think that you will get a much better deal if you just keep bidding it up instead of using B.I.N., especially if you need it delivered. When comparing prices to the other Fortwo rebuilders listed for sale, remember the things that you won’t have to spend money on, soon after getting it home. With this car you wont have to spend $1,000 or more on airbags and diagnostics, you won’t have to spend $500 on suspension parts and alignment, you won’t have to spend $300 for a new set of tires, you won’t have to spend $300 on a complete front brake service, you won’t have to spend $300 on a complete rear brake service, you won’t have to spend $300 on a coolant and brake flush, you won’t have to spend $300 on a tune-up and filters service and you won’t have to spend $300 on any upcoming scheduled maintenance. With many of the other listings on Ebay, Craigslist or on dealers lots, you’re lucky if they even check the oil before delivery. When comparing this car to the others, also keep in mind that this car looks, runs and drives excellent, hasn’t been smoked in and is otherwise clean inside and out. The last Fortwo rebuilder I sold here was in March for $2,595 and was older, higher mileage and needed an airbag and many more parts, so I believe this one is priced correctly in comparison, especially considering the free delivery with Buy It Now offer. TERMS OF THE AUCTION ARE AS FOLLOWS: Since this car may be advertised locally, auction can be canceled at any time (unless auction ended early with BUY IT NOW) due to prior sale without liability to any bidder. If paying balance with funds other than cash, buyer to fax copy of monetary instrument no less than 24 hours before picking up vehicle. The car is sold as is. Buyer is welcome to inspect car BEFORE the end of the auction or to have someone check it out on your behalf provided you authorize whoever is checking the car to provide me with a copy of the results. I have tried to accurately describe this car, both mechanically and cosmetically but you can expect a certain amount of minor flaws on ANY used car including squeaks, rattles, drips, nicks, chips, scratches, blemishes and any other marks that are consistent with the age and mileage of the vehicle. There is no possible way to include all minute details and imperfections, however, I believe my listing accurately depicts this vehicle and if there are any issues they are noted in the description.
