Vehicle Detail
This auction is for a 2009 Smart Fortwo that is finished in Rally Red with a black Tridion® and has the gray interior. When you are looking at and comparing other Smart cars listed here on eBay, keep in mind this Smart has had over $2,500 of new or recent parts, service, maintenance and tires (details further down in the description) so while it may not be the cheapest one here, it is certainly the best value for the money. Smarts were first sold in the USA in 2008, but they have been sold in Europe and the rest of the world for ten years prior to that, earning a reputation for quality and reliability after countless billions of miles on the road. 1.5 million Smart Fortwo cars were built as of 2013 and annual sales figures are strong. The design of the Smart was influenced by the Swiss watch maker Swatch®, whose CEO began developing an idea for a new small and stylish city car using the same type of manufacturing strategies and personalization features used to popularize Swatch watches. Initially, the car was known as the Swatchmobile. To share costs and manufacturing technology, Swatch partnered with Mercedes-Benz to implement production. The name Smart derives from Smart Mercedes ART. A factory was built in Hambach, France, just a few miles from the German border, and this is where Smarts are built to this day. A combination of chic French and Swiss style with renowned German engineering. The Smart Fortwo is powered by a rear mounted 1.0 liter 70 H.P. DOHC 12-valve 3 cylinder all aluminum engine made by Mitsubishi. Known as the 3B21, the engine is set at an angle to fit below the back cargo floor and features an aluminum engine block and head for light weight and maximum heat dissipation, cast iron cylinder liners for exceptional durability, dual overhead cams with MIVEC® (Mitsubishi Innovative Valve timing Electronic Control system) variable valve timing for maximum power output at all engine speeds, a steel timing chain for reduced maintenance instead of a rubber timing belt found in many other cars that need periodic replacement, multiport fuel injection for excellent gas mileage, drive by wire throttle for precise engine control and coil on plug (COP) ignition for reliability in all environmental conditions. This engine adds Japanese quality to the mix along with affordable parts and service goals that couldn’t have been met if a Mercedes manufactured engine was used. The engine is mated to a 5-speed automated manual transmission with manual mode along with Electronic Traction Control (ETC). It combines the ease and comfort of driving an automatic transmission with the economy, sportiness and easier reparability of a manual transmission. In other words, it’s a lot easier and cheaper to replace a clutch on a manual transmission than it is to rebuild or replace an automatic transmission. The transmission is basically a regular manual gearbox, but there is no clutch pedal. In automatic mode, all shifting and clutch actuation is performed by a module controlling the shift motor and a clutch actuator. The feel is identical to that of a full manual transmission with the slight pause between gear shifts and slight engine revving during take off from a stop. It even has rollback protection with Hill-Assist Control (HAC) that keeps the brakes engaged for a second while you move your foot from the brake pedal to the accelerator. Besides automatic mode, you can move the shifter to the left from the “D” position into manual mode and then tap forward to upshift or rearward to downshift. Regardless, the transmission will always downshift to a lower gear if you slowdown and forget to do it yourself. And whenever manual mode is selected, the gear position, 1 thru 5, is shown in the multifunction display. It has a low first gear that provides brisk acceleration from a stop, while the high overdrive top gear allows for effortless highway cruising and great fuel economy. The traction control system uses the components from the ABS system and the electronic throttle to regulate engine torque to enhance traction with wheel slip of one tire of the vehicle being counteracted by applying brakes to that wheel, causing torque to be sent to the wheel with the most traction. Rounding out the Smart is a body built to last and a rigid chassis with steering, suspension and brake systems made for comfort as well as providing excellent handling, road feel and positive feedback. Smart body panels are made of a plastic composite that will never rust and that absorb minor impacts without getting dents like a metal car body would. The main structure of the car is composed of the Tridion Safety Cell, which in addition to excellent safety characteristics, makes for an exceptionally stiff chassis for reduced body flex allowing excellent handling. Start with a manual rack and pinion steering for quick maneuvering and easy parking on congested city streets while still providing precise feedback at higher speeds that most power steering systems isolate out. Add a MacPherson strut suspension with a stabilizer bar up front along with coil springs and twin-tube dampers in the back for a smooth ride on rough city streets and a taught controlled ride on highways and twisting roads. Finish with front disc brakes for maximum fade resistance coupled with ABS for sure stops on all road surfaces and weather conditions, plus Electronic Brake Distribution that activates in emergency stopping situations. It’s been said that the Smart Fortwo is like driving a street legal go-cart every day. 70 horsepower may not seem like much, but since the car only weighs 1,800 pounds and rides on the shortest wheelbase of any car sold in America, “fun to drive” is an understatement. Whether you’re battling bumper to bumper traffic downtown, or making time down a smooth interstate highway, the Smart Fortwo makes any drive something to look forward to. Lastly, the most important attribute of any car is safety, and the Smart Fortwo ranks high in government tests. Small size doesn’t have to equate with small protection. The main structure of the car known as the Tridion Safety Cell is designed to activate the crumple zones of a colliding vehicle while creating a safety cell around the occupants. Numerous active, passive and preventive safety systems in addition to the Tridion are incorporated including dual stage front airbags, head/thorax side airbags, seatbelt pretensioners, anti-lock brakes, brake force distribution and stability control. In Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) tests, the 2008 Smart Fortwo, the smallest car marketed in the US market, earned the top overall rating of "Good" in both the front and side crash tests. The Fortwo received the "Good" score in 8 of 11 measured injury categories. Its seat/head restraints earned the second highest rating of "Acceptable" for protection against whiplash in rear impacts. In tests by NHTSA, the Fortwo received a 4 out 5 star rating for front impact to the driver and 5 out of 5 star safety rating for side impacts. The Smart Fortwo is safer than many much larger cars, and with it’s small footprint and excellent maneuverability, the Smart car often avoids accidents in the first place. This Smart Fortwo is fully equipped with all the desirable safety, comfort and convenience features and equipment including: 1.0L 3 cylinder engine 5-speed automated manual transmission with manual modes, Rollback Protection and Electronic Traction Control (ETC). Air conditioning with cabin air filter Power windows with one-touch express down Power door locks Factory touch-screen navigation infotainment system with AM/FM/CD/DVD/SD stereo Bluetooth® interface Auxiliary input jack and USB port for external devices Euro-style shorty antenna Remote keyless entry with rear hatch opening and panic button Premium cloth seat upholstery with mesh back inserts for air circulation Sport bucket seats with recline function Door storage pockets Fold-down passenger seatback for hauling long objects Center consolette with coin holder and storage tray Leather wrapped shift knob Instrument cluster with multifunction display for trip odometer, outside temperature, clock, gear position, fuel level, low fuel, service interval, etc. 12 volt power outlet Locking glove box Tinted glass Passenger visor vanity mirror Power outside mirrors Clear lens projector beam headlights One-touch three flash turn signals Fender mounted turn signal repeaters Illuminated entry Black honeycomb mesh grille inserts Rear window defroster Aluminum wheels Tire pressure monitoring system TPMS Flat tire inflator and sealant Carpeted cargo area with tie-down hook Independently opening rear hatch window and tailgate Fold-down rear tailgate Storage compartment in tailgate Rear aerodynamic spoiler Rear intermittent wiper and washer Anti-theft security system with engine immobilizer Scuff resistant textured rocker panel moldings Tridion Safety Cell Dual-stage front airbags with passenger sensing Occupant Classification System (OCS) Side airbags Seatbelt pretensioners Child seat tether anchor Anti-lock brakes Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) Electronic Stability Program (ESP) And many more items too numerous to mention. There are over 100 photos ahead and if you don’t have a high speed internet connection and get an “X” where a picture should be you may need to hit the Refresh button a few times. If that still doesn’t work, contact me for a direct link to see the pictures individually. And it’s best to view the listing on a desktop or laptop computer. A smart phone won’t give you the same details. It has an excellent body with none of the scratches or blemishes you would normally expect on a car of this age and mileage. I checked the car over top to bottom and found no evidence of any accidents or even any previous paintwork. Remember, it’s hard enough to find a two or three year old low mileage car which hasn’t had a hood or fender repaired or replaced, let alone a 7 year old one. The paint itself is beautiful and shiny and this bright red color just about glows in the sunlight. It has been cleaned with Meguiar’s Smooth Surface Clay System, polished with Meguiar’s Mirror Glaze cleaner polish and topped off with Meguiar’s Ultimate Synthetic Wax for a high gloss shine. The headlights were detailed with the 3M headlight polishing system for a crystal clear look. The wheels were removed and detailed on the inside as well as the outside and look great. All the glass, moldings, trim and emblems are excellent except for the cosmetic plastic outer coating on the roof has deteriorated in spots which is quite common on these models. It’s not anything that stands out, and an inexpensive solution some have done is a wrap, particularly a carbon fiber design would look great. The interior is in great condition as well. It has nice upholstery, dashboard, door panels, carpet and headliner with no cracks, rips or tears, or any major signs of wear. The car doesn‘t appear to have been smoked in. In fact, it’s not even equipped with a lighter. The engine compartment is clean and the cargo area looks like its hardly ever been used. Mechanically it runs and drives excellent. The engine runs strong and feels smooth while accelerating and throughout the cruising range and it starts instantly whether hot or cold. The steering wheel is on dead center going down the road with no shakes or vibrations at speed, the brakes are firm with no pedal pulsations or pulling to one side when stopping and the suspension is tight. The A/C blows ice cold. It has a matching set of four Kumho Solus tires with excellent tread all around. They have been balanced with coated weights mounted on the inside of the wheel for a super clean look and which wont corrode and look ugly like uncoated weights do. The car has been fully checked out and serviced with over $2,500 worth of new or recent parts, maintenance and repairs with original Smart, Mercedes or other name brand parts so that only your enjoyment rather than your immediate attention will be required on delivery. Some of the items checked or serviced include: New Mobil 1 0W-40 synthetic oil change New Smart oil filter New Smart air filter Recent Smart cabin air filter New throttle body cleaning New valve adjustment New Smart valve tappets New Smart valve cover gasket New Smart spark plug tube seals New Denso iridium spark plugs New Remy remanufactured alternator Recent Smart alternator belt Recent Smart A/C belt New coolant flush with distilled water New Mercedes coolant change Recent front brake pads Recent front brake rotors Recent Ferodo rear brake shoes New Castrol Dot 4 Synthetic brake fluid flush and change Recent set of four Kumho Solus tires Photos of some of the parts replaced, checked or serviced: Parts replaced: Oil change: Oil filter: Air filter: Cabin air filter: Throttle body cleaning: Super clean internal engine condition: Valve clearance check: Valve tappets removed: New valve tappets: Valve clearance check after tappets installed: Valve cover gasket and spark plug tune seals: Spark plugs with the proper amount of anti-seize on the threads: Alternator: Alternator belt: A/C belt: Coolant flushed until water drains clear: Front brake pads: Front brake rotors 9.7 mm new, 8 mm minimum: Rear brake shoes: Brake fluid flush and change: Smart has sold a majority of their cars in Europe because of the narrow roads, tight parking spaces and high gas prices. While not as common in the U.S., that can be a good thing if you don’t want a cookie cutter car that you see by the dozen at every mall or supermarket parking lot. If you like individuality, the Smart Fortwo is a good car to express that in. It’s styling is unique, a with Euro-chic design combined with Teutonic flair combining to form an attractive and functional vehicle that looks stylish from any angle without being flashy. The first thing you notice is the overall size, or lack thereof, as the doors seem to span nearly the entire length of the car. The next thing you notice is the beautiful shade of red that a Ferrari owner would be most familiar with. Then you admire the euro-style touches that add a rich appearance such as the black honeycomb upper and lower grilles, fender mounted turn signal repeaters and shorty antenna. Now open the door and step inside. Notice the light and airy feeling you get, totally opposite of what you would expect in such a small car. Even 6 foot 5” drivers have enough head and legroom in the Fortwo. In fact, it has about the same legroom, and close to the headroom, of a Cadillac Escalade. The seats are exceptionally comfortable, the materials inside are first-rate, and the view out the windshield is panoramic. An abundance of light fills the cabin. Grab the steering wheel or shifter and notice how the dash switches and navigation screen are just a fingertip away. Next, look ahead at the dashboard and instrument cluster with the large easy to read speedometer with just MPH markings and the multifunction display below it. Notice high quality pinpoint design gray fabric covering the dash and the brushed aluminum accents throughout. Not only is the styling attractive, but all the textures have a rich feel and look and all the switchgear have a precise soft touch action. From the thickness of the steering wheel, the leather on the shift knob, the graining pattern on the dash and door panels, or the layout of the knobs and switches on the dash, everything looks and feels like it came from a more expensive car. It’s no wonder that in 2002, the New York Museum of Modern Art (MoMa) introduced a first generation Fortwo into its permanent collection (the only vehicle to be included into the collection while still in production). Overall this is a super sharp car that looks absolutely fantastic in this Rally Red color. You’re sure to get many questions and complements about it at the mall or supermarket parking lot from total strangers. If you don’t want attention, or if you are the least bit shy, don’t buy this car, I warn you. Also, it’s been a one owner southern car from Maryland most of its life, which probably explains why it’s so clean. CLICK HERE to see the title. It also has a clean one owner Carfax. CLICK HERE to see the Carfax report. I bought this Smart a year and a half ago to sell, but liked it so much, I held on to it this long. I got it at a dealer auction during the winter when prices are traditionally lower and I’m passing on the savings in this auction. If instead of selling it back at a dealer auction I can sell it here on Ebay for a similar price and avoid dealer auction fees and transportation expenses, and the new owner gets the car at a true wholesale price, then both buyer and seller make out ahead. If you are looking for a very nice Smart Fortwo in the most desirable color, in excellent condition, and at a good price, then this car is hard to beat. 2008 was the first year for the Smart Fortwo in the USA, and this 2009 looks virtually identical to late model Fortwo’s up to 2015. What that means is you can own a car with the looks and style of a late model Fortwo for a fraction of the cost. Also remember that we don’t charge dealer processing fees or document fees that many other listings have for $200 or more and bury in their fine print. And don’t be fooled by some other auctions that are advertised as NO RESERVE and start at $100 or some other low price. Since no dealer is going to risk losing thousands of dollars if their auction doesn’t bring enough money, you can be pretty sure he has some “people” bidding on it for him. Especially those auctions that are private listings where it says “User ID kept private.” Also, because my reserve is close to the Buy It Now price, don’t think that you will get a much better deal if you just keep bidding it up instead of using B.I.N., especially if you need it delivered. If you are serious about buying a Smart that is ready to drive, this is about as low as they go in this condition. Sure, you can find many of these cars that look nice and seem like good deals in the $3,000 to $4,000 range, but if after getting it home you have to spend another $2,000 or $3,000 for mechanical work, body repairs, tires, and routine maintenance, it’s no bargain. Remember, you can get a great deal on Ebay with prices sometimes way below retail, but no bidder is going to “steal” a vehicle and no seller is going to give one away either. Also when comparing prices to the other Fortwo’s listed for sale, remember the things that you won’t have to spend money on, soon after getting it home. With this car you wont have to spend $1,000 or more on paint or bodywork, you won’t have to spend $700 on a valve adjustment, you won’t have to spend $300 for a new set of tires, you won’t have to spend $300 on a complete front brake service, you won’t have to spend $300 on a complete rear brake service, you won’t have to spend $300 on a coolant and brake flush, you won’t have to spend $300 on a tune-up and filters service and you won’t have to spend $300 on any upcoming scheduled maintenance. With many of the other listings on Ebay, Craigslist or on dealers lots, you’re lucky if they even check the oil before delivery. When comparing this car to the others, also keep in mind that this car looks and runs excellent, is fully serviced, hasn’t been smoked in and is super clean inside and out. TERMS OF THE AUCTION ARE AS FOLLOWS: Since this car may be advertised locally, auction can be canceled at any time (unless auction ended early with BUY IT NOW) due to prior sale without liability to any bidder. A down payment of $500 (plus any additional delivery charge) is required within 3 days of the close of the auction, balance due in cash on delivery or certified funds on delivery if I deliver it or you pick it up, or before it’s dropped off at the transporter if a shipping company is transporting it, but no later than 7 days after the close of the auction without prior agreement. I accept bank or certified checks, money orders, credit cards through PayPal (accepted for down payment only). If paying balance with funds other than cash, buyer to fax copy of monetary instrument no less than 24 hours before picking up vehicle. The car is sold as is. Buyer is welcome to inspect car BEFORE the end of the auction or to have someone check it out on your behalf provided you authorize whoever is checking the car to provide me with a copy of the results. I have tried to accurately describe this car, both mechanically and cosmetically but you can expect a certain amount of minor flaws on ANY used car including squeaks, rattles, drips, nicks, chips, scratches, blemishes and any other marks that are consistent with the age and mileage of the vehicle. There is no possible way to include all minute details and imperfections, however, I believe my listing accurately depicts this vehicle and if there are any issues they are noted in the description. Also remember that a vehicle is made up of thousands of mechanical parts and components and in an older or higher mileage used vehicle a part that is working fine now may go bad the next day, in a week, or a month from now. It’s nearly impossible to tell when a particular part or component will fail as most don’t exhibit prior symptoms, however, proper preventative maintenance as this car has received, can prevent most problems or breakdowns from happening. In fairness to all bidders the reserve price will not be disclosed so please don’t even ask. Buyer responsible for transportation and car must be paid for in full before it can be released. May deliver. Email or call for delivery quote or for any other questions. atikovi@email.com Maryland and District of Columbia dealer. Phone 202-246-5201. Please do not bid if you don’t intend to buy.
