Vehicle Detail

This is a 2002 BMW 540i that has the Sport package and automatic transmission with less than 78,000 miles on it. The car is awesome overall and is in pretty fantastic shape inside and out. I bought this car a few years ago and just never really drove it since I needed a SUV at the time and picked up a 4Runner to drive daily. This car with this many miles is pretty much unable to be found these days, but similar cars with around 130,000-140,000 and in good order are selling on eBay on average for around $6,000-$9,000 (these are based on historical SALES, not listing but actual sold vehicles. This is the ultimate enthusiast vehicle and could make an absolute perfect car for someone wanting to have that BMW experience since it rides and handles incredible. I have a new job, I moved, and am in the process of starting a business so the time to work with and fix the car is not something I have these days, so I’m selling it instead. The good: -The car has extremely low miles for its year. -Very strong engine and transmission -Interior is beautiful-Has sport package including the awesome seats and the staggered special wheels (wide rear tires) -Paint and body in really nice shape -Only changed the oil with Mobil 1 synthetic -MANY new parts; some of them to list here are brake pads and rotors, MAF sensor, Coolant temp sensor, IAC valve, EGR, Ambient temp sensor, Secondary Air valve, battery (2 years ago and has been not used in many months), multiple relays, cabin and engine air filters, and Michelin Pilot Sport A/S with less than 400 miles on them. The bad: The car will run perfect (when battery is charged of course as it is dead since it hasn't been driven in many months) for around 2 minutes or until the secondary air system kicks to its “off” position. Once this happens the car will sputter then turn off. You can start it back up but since the car is warm, it will then turn off again within about 30 seconds. This took me a long time to diagnose and it happened around a year and a half ago or so which means I haven’t driven it in that long so I finally contacted and had the help of a local European specific car shop take a look to find out the issue. I was a technician at MAG about 6 years ago so I had run a few tests with the limited tools I had that gave me the ideas to replace the parts I did. Finally, once I replaced almost $2,000 in parts and still didn’t fix it, I got the shop involved. What we found was the coolant temp sensor had ended up leaking right into the wire sleeve and caused the wire to corrode up to the ECM (one of the engine computers). The ECM pins where this wire and the secondary air circuits are held then had shorted out and caused damage to the ECM. Long story short, the car needs a new ECM and those secondary air system wires re-wired which in total is estimated right around $1,100 (ECM kit is $699 and wiring work is around 4-5 hours so if done by a shop it’s about $400-$500 in my area) If those two parts get replaced the car is back in action to a perfectly good and very strong/desirable car. The only other pieces I’d personally replace would be the normal issues that the 540 gets such as the right rear door seal so the water doesn’t leak in anymore when it rains hard (looks like a tiny bit of mold has started to show up on the back seat due to the water leak), the front kidney grilles , and the valve cover gaskets since they leak a little bit. Those are common maintenance items on this car but I recommend that so the car is pretty much excellent at that point. The buyer will arrange and pay for all shipping and handling related services. (Remember it is considered non-running by shipping carrier terms) $500 deposit through PayPal and you pay the 3% transaction fee they charge for using their service. If the entire car amount is paid for by using PayPal, don't forget to add the 3% fee in the payment amount. Also - In case you wanted to verify the cost of the ECM, feel free to contact me and I can get you the link to the part.
