Vehicle Detail
1974 BMW 2002 Tii 02 E10 Original Unmolested Extensive Service History in Calif. This 1974 BMW 2002 Tii is two owner car. Unmolested, well documented and completely stock, it is a numbers matching U.S. Model Tii with 110,797 California miles. The Body VIN stamping (#2781812) matches the engine, steering column pad, and D.O.T. door tag. Unlike many performance cars of this vintage, this Tii escaped modification by its previous owners. Records dating back to 1977 document the servicing using OEM replacement parts. It is obvious that the previous owners took very good care of this car as evidenced by the many original parts, including all four original 13x5 steel wheels, each date stamped 4/74, and an original Michelin XAS spare tire. Evidence of its originality is in every area: all four original AUTOFLUG seatbelts (dated 1974), all original glass (including windscreen) that even includes the transparent engine Tii starting instructions. This continues with original carpet, red tip (Hirschmann) antenna, jack and lug wrench, two sets of keys that match the ignition and doors and a separate key for the trunk. In the glove box resides the original BMW service books and both owner’s manuals. All electrical components work, including all lights, blinkers, gauges, horn, emergency flasher, and even the original tii clock. Rust: One of the best features of this car is its rust free under carriage, including all four floor pans, shock towers and frame rails. Only small patches of surface rust can be found on two wheel well lips and the bottom corners of the passenger door. Spare wheel well is original. This is a very dry car with no structural rust. Obviously, there is spot rust in the lower door and rear fender lip areas. You would need to address this prior to any repainting. I have owned and restored many vintage BMW’s and this is one of the structurally driest cars I have ever seen. Paint and Body: There is no evidence of front or rear collision damage. Tii aficionado’s will appreciate the original nose clip / radiator core support that is without the air intake ‘snorkel’, covered at the corners with the original seem sealer. Aged evidence does not get any clearer. All body panels, with the exception of the left front fender, are original. The exterior surfaces were repainted once in the 1980’s in the original Siena Braun color, there is overspray on some of the rubber parts indicating the repaint was typical when re-sprays where casually taped off. I’ve tried to provide very clear images as there are several nicks, scratches, and door dings, but the car looks very good as a daily driver. An exterior respray (no jambs required) would make a substantial improvement in its up close visual appeal and long-term investment potential. Interior- Both the headliner and carpet are original with no rips. Dash has one crack- see photo. The Tii clock works. Door cards are complete and original with –very rare- no aftermarket speaker holes. Front and rear seats look great and have no rips or tears; they were reupholstered about 20 years ago retaining original color and pattern. Everything except the stereo is stock. Fortunately, the speakers were installed in the kick panels below the rear seats, keeping the door cards and rear parcel shelf intact. Included in the sale is an original radio with an uncut AC front console cover should you wish to return the car to original. Owner history: The most recent California owner garaged the car for the past 27 years (1988 to 2015). It was used as a daily driver for the first 13 years and then put it in dry California storage for the past 14 years –with minimal miles driven. A major service has just been completed in November of 2015 including: all fluids, flushed the gas tank and radiator, new hoses, thermostat, master brake cylinder, brake lines, spark plugs, plug wires, and distributor, a new battery, adjusted the valves and re-timed the ignition system. Four matching 185/60/13 Kumho tires with 95% tread remaining. The car has just completed a 400 miles run-in with no problems. Local pick up is available and I would not hesitate to get in the car and drive to Seattle. It starts easily, shifts smoothly in all gears with excellent synchronizer performance including downshifting. On the freeway, the car runs smoothly at 75mph and the temperature gauge registers steadily at the half way mark. The motor makes full power (Spec: 125 H.P. SAE) and pulls very strong from low rpm to near redline. There is light tailpipe smoking on deceleration. The doors, hood and trunk fit nicely with consistent gaps and operate without rattles. I greased all window regulators and replaced both door-stops. The most important, yet subjective, observation with 2781812 is the very tight feel and solid structural feedback you get when driving. Pot holes are met with a single ‘thud’ on recovery. It is bank-vault tight in comparison to other 2002’s. This is performance evidence of a car that is truly ‘original” and has not been abused, disassembled, or reassembled incorrectly. It offers an exception data point in enjoying a true 1974 Tii driving experience. Please pay careful attention to the photos. I’ve made every effort to accurately document the true condition of this Tii. If you have questions email me. I post and reply to all questions to all sellers. In fairness to all bidders, I do not disclose my reserve. My reserve is quite low in comparison to other recent auction closures of 1974 2002tii’s. See Sports Car Market Magazine -December 2015. Any professional inspection is welcome. If you are from out of State / Country, there are number of local, highly qualified independent BMW mechanics who are most welcome to inspect the car. I would not recommend the local BMW Dealership for this inspection as the service technician will likely approach the lower dash area with an OBD II computer and will likely comment that his parents were born in 1974. PPI inspections are at the buyer’s expense. This offer requires a 24 hour advance notice to make arrangements. Please arrange a morning appointment, as I will not leave the car at any mechanics facility overnight. Seller gets a full copy of any mechanics report. This car requires a 10% paypal deposit 24 hours after auction close. Fully payment is due with 4 days of auction close. Wire transfer is available. If you have 0 auction(s) history on Ebay you must contact me before bidding. Repeat: zero feedback on Ebay requires contacting the seller prior to your first bid. This car has a current clear title in the state of California. Insurance (at auction close) and registration are 100% a buyer expense. I will collaborate with any carrier service you select and I am willing to deliver the car to the Port of Long Beach for containerization. Buyer is responsible to source, select and pay for all shipping costs and make all arrangements. Local pick up in Costa Mesa, California is welcome after funds transfer. Check my feedback. Good Luck Bidding.
