Vehicle Detail
OVERVIEW: This 1972 Ford F-250 Sport Custom Camper Special Styleside Pickup is a very clean, complete, and original one owner truck which has been garage kept and pampered from new, and is still in the hands of its original owner. The words ‘3/4 ton’ and ‘cream puff’ don’t generally pair up, but they absolutely do in this case. It is as nice an example of this truck as you could ever hope to find, especially considering that it is original in all respects and with never any work done to it beyond regular service maintenance and upkeep. It’s a 2-wheel drive ¾ ton truck which has been maintained in original condition without modifications. Equipped with the optional 390 ci. V8 with 2 bbl. carburetor, automatic transmission, power steering and power disc brakes. It is in excellent original condition in all respects, has had a recent service, needs nothing, and also comes with its original build sheet. This truck runs, drives, and handles extremely well, goes down gravel without any rattles or squeaks, and down the highway with virtually no wind noise. Very sweet! The current owner bought it new and chose the Sport Custom package as he preferred the trimmer look of the narrow side moldings. He has treated it with respect throughout the years, regularly waxing it and never neglecting any aspect of it. It remains unmolested and as originally equipped. Mileage is just over 58K original. It is an original southern Alberta truck which has spent its whole life in our dry western climate and never saw winter. It draws attention anywhere it’s parked due to its wonderful condition and curbside presence. The Camper Special Package included heavy duty battery, 55-amp.alternator, ammeter, oil pressure gauge, bright 6” x 10” Western long-arm mirrors, extra cooling package, 7-wire camper wiring harness, dual electric horns, and “Camper Special” emblems. He equipped this truck with an auxiliary battery as well. It has the sliding rear window option, and will accommodate up to an 11 ft. camper. Other options on this truck include tinted glass, rear step bumper, tool box with door lock on lower right side, and auxiliary frame mounted fuel tank in addition to standard tank for a combined total of 37 gallons. It also has a Dana cruise control which was added when new. DRIVETRAIN: The high performance 390 ci. V8 engine is fueled by the owners’ choice of a 2 bbl. carburetor and is rated at 325 hp. It starts very easily, sounds very good, and is in very smooth and quiet running condition. It has good oil pressure and does not smoke. Recent service included an oil change and carb kit installed due to dried out gaskets. It has a SelectShift Cruise-O-Matic transmission, and is equipped with an oil cooler. During test drive the transmission shifted as it should. There are no serious oil leaks beyond the couple of sweat drips one finds on most driven vehicles. All mechanical components on and around the engine appear and function in good condition. In terms of roadworthiness and reliability this truck needs nothing. The engine compartment is very complete and original looking, and it is very clean and tidy, although it would appear that Ford did not prime their inner fenders before painting them black. Cleaning up the inner fenders along with some detailing of a few components and brackets would enhance its appearance even further and bring it in line with the exterior. CHASSIS: This truck rides on a 131” wheelbase with Twin-I-Beam front suspension and I-bean radius rods, and has a GVW rating of 6,900 lbs. The Flex-O-Matic rear suspension automatically adjusts spring stiffness for varying loads. This truck also has the optional auxiliary rear springs. The chassis and undercarriage is all original with all components and systems maintained in good roadworthy condition. There are no rust or rot concerns with this truck, it is very solid throughout, and there has never been any collision damage. The frame and chassis components show the wear of its years and miles of service, but that is limited to gravel rash, road dirt, and the typical surface rust of a driven undercarriage. A test drive in this truck confirms a very comfortable ride from Ford’s combination of Twin-I-Beam and Flex-O-Matic suspensions. Front end steering components appear to be in good condition as steering is tight and the power steering functions well. Equipped with the optional heavy duty 12” x 2 ½” power front disc brakes and 12” x 2 ½“ rear brakes with 8.8” booster. Braking during test drive was smooth and even. Exhaust system is in good condition and quiet. The underside sheet metal, such as cab floor and mounts, box floors and braces, are very solid. Factory undercoat is still evident and retains its adhesion and integrity, covered by road dust, and no rust out issues anywhere. The running tires are a matched set of Uniroyal Laredo LT245/75R16 black wall radials in very good condition with very good tread remaining. They are mounted on new 16” rims which the owner chose to replace the original split rims. They are in like new condition with excellent paint on them, sporting a nice set of original hubcaps. BODY & PAINT: The body and paint on this truck are totally original, never having any repairs beyond the owner touching up the odd stone chip with a dab of paint. All body panels and sheet metal are very straight and rust free. There are only 3 very small soft dents worth mentioning on the whole truck. They are approx. the size of a quarter and can be seen in the pics, none have broken the paint. One is below the Ford 250 emblem on the right fender, one on the right door below the mirror, and one near the front of the left door about mid-way up. The factory paint has held up very well and is in very good condition. In some areas it’s in downright incredible condition, such as on the door and body jambs, and along inside the drip rails above the windshield and doors. The factory finish is high-solids acrylic enamel, which according to the sales brochure is; “baked-on, hard-gloss finish has maximum ‘new looking’ color retention”. Their claim proves to be true on this truck. The paint is factory smooth and still has good luster. Much credit is due to the owner for his care and the regular waxing it received. In fact, in some of the pictures you will see whitish residue in seams, nooks and crannies, and around emblems, it’s all dried wax. It’s also on the black lettering in the emblems, and visible around the raised lettering of the various plastic lenses. It comes off easily, but is a tedious job done with the likes of a toothpick and toothbrush. I applied a small amount of wax to the front center area of the hood and with a bit of hand polishing and buffing it came back with a super nice shine. It would not take much to bring it to like new showroom shine again. There are very few in the way of blemishes, chips, or scratches on the exterior. The most obvious and unfortunate one is a scratch on the right upper side of the box, above the tool box. The 8 ft. Styleside box has double-wall side panels, and is all welded steel. It has wide-apart flattop wheel housings, and a sturdy tailgate that can support a ton. It also has the optional locking tool box on the right side, as clean as the rest of it. It’s in wonderful original condition. The owner used to have a camper on it, that has been sold. The box on this truck is in amazingly clean and solid condition. The tailgate very clean and straight, with support arms and latch in very good condition. The optional rear step bumper is straight and paint is in good condition. INTERIOR: The blue interior is in super nice original condition. The seat has always had a cover on it, which in itself has survived without any rips or wear thru, and it was finally removed during this picture taking to reveal the original seat vinyl in absolutely wonderful like new condition. Equipped with seat belts for 3 passengers. The dash pad is perfect, and the paint on the dash and door interiors is fantastic. The padded door panels and arm rests are without flaw, as are the sun visors and headliner. The steering wheel has been kept wrapped, but the usual spot for cracks where the spokes meet the rim shows it to be in excellent condition. The original floor mat is very good and without rips, tears or holes. The aluminum door sill step plates are very nice, straight and dent free. Floors under and behind the seat very nice and clean with the tire iron and jack crank held in place by their clips. Main gas tank behind seat retains a nice coat of paint. All weather-strips and seals are still soft and pliable, without deterioration and in very good serviceable condition. The truck is quiet on the highway. The great original condition of this interior further attests that this Ford has not spent much time exposed to the elements and has always been garaged. It’s as nice an original interior as you could hope to find on any truck. All glass on the truck, including the original windshield, is in good condition, with just one chip on the windshield, up high near the top left corner. ELECTRICAL: The wiring and all electricals on the truck are in very good original condition. All electrical components are operational, except for the cigarette lighter. The instrument cluster and gauges are all in excellent condition. The Dana cruise control works as it should. It took the place of the original turn signal lever, which remains with the truck, along with the Dana instruction booklet. The AM radio works and it sports are very unique original antenna with a tear drop profile. All lights are in working order, and all plastic lenses are in excellent condition, albeit with the aforementioned bit of wax residue stuck in the lettering. The headlamps have plastic bubble type shields over them, clear with no cracks. BRIGHTWORK: The front bumper and guards, chrome, stainless, and aluminum trim are all in very nice original condition. The bumpers are nice and straight with no damage and appear as new. All chromed pot metal items like emblems and door handles are pit free and have great shine. Black paint in the emblems is all good, but again home to some wax residue. The aluminum grille is straight, no cracks or breaks, and has very good shine. A small rub in the black center vertical bar can be easily touched up. There is one small ding on the left side, and a couple of tiny ones on the hood molding. All mid and lower side moldings are straight and in very good overall condition with good shine. SUMMARY: A link to a photo album with many additional pics is provided at the end of this listing. Original factory literature includes a full 5 volume set of Shop Manuals, Service Specs Booklet, Maintenance Guide, Accessories Brochure, and Sales Brochure. The original Owner’s Manual has been misplaced but may turn up yet. There are a few new Fomoco spare parts included as well, a fan belt and pair of windshield wipers, a center bearing assembly, and a fuel pump.
