Vehicle Detail
Mercedes produced the W201 (190) with the 2.5 Turbo Diesel for only one year, 1987. Less than 1300 W201 190DTs were produced and only 1169 were sent to United States. This documented Mercedes had 3 individual families own it and included is almost all receipts since its delivery at HBL Mercedes in Tysons Corner, VA in 11/87. The original window sticker and manuals are included. In 2002, this 190DT received the 250KM(155ml) maintenance award from Mercedes Classics Group for its verified service records. In 2006, its first only accident reported as a fender bender . This incident is reported in its Carfax pulled in 5/08. That dent remains on fender and is mentioned above under conditions reported. Since purchasing from the family member in 2007, this 190DT was the example of "slow and steady". The transmission always shifted firmly and once it reached interstate speed limit it was a normal car. It was used for errands and for going to school. All three sons learned to drive safety and slow with it. It was not the families favorite car, but it posted great mpg of 36 highway and 26 in town. Most importantly it was reliable and never needed a tow or jumpstart. Reviewing the early maintenance records shows service notes of hard shifting. About 6 months ago both of my late model Mercedes C class sedans were in the shop with high tech issues and the Mercedes 300TE was in still storage, the 190DT became the commuter car. During that fall period, I found the micro switch that linked throttle position, trans linkage and fuel delivery was not working. After installation of the new $92 switch, the 190DT came to life. The car now had kick and was fun to drive. You could feel and hear the turbo work. Mileage stayed about the same but the transmission now shifted smoothly. Soon driveline mounts needed replacement starting with the motor and transmission mounts. Next the water pump bearing got loud so the pump and pulley bracket bearing was renewed. Next the leading rear control arm this w201 multilink rear suspension needed replacement. Then the diesel pump seals began to badly leak. I bought a kit from mercedessource.com, installed the wave washers/seals and the leaks stopped and increased its performance even more. I added a K & N airfilter to balance its new fuel performance. Now this 190DT is much quicker and smoother. The W203 C class 16 inch wheels with 20560/16 were put on after the 190DT came alive to improve traction and handling. Recent maintenance and replaced items: Trans linkage micro switch, 5 glow plugs, fuel heater, fuel lines, diesel fuel pump line seal kit, fuel filters, alternator, battery, serpentine belt, steering damper, belt tensioner, left tie rod (have new right tierod and centerlink ready to install), ball joints, water pump, coolant thermostat, coolant sensor, brake pads, overload relay, transmission gasket/filter, headlight covers, copper fuses, rear control arm link, both motor mounts, transmission mount, front struts, linkage bushings, plus regular oil/filter changes using Rotella 15W40, plus a new K & N Air filter. Upcoming items: The AC is becoming cool, not ice cold so a recharge is needed. Since 2007 there was no need to recharge. Replace the supplied passenger side tie rod and center link. Given the added power, a new set of drilled rotors and pads might be considered later. Recently the driver side rear window stopped in the up position. The regulator works with 12v applied so its either the switch or a ground.
