Vehicle Detail
Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE This 1959 Buick Electra is a true time capsule, entirely original other than a few minor details mentioned in the description, magnificent patina and a wonderfully performing car, awaiting its next caretaker and new home. It was bought new September 1959, by the Albert & Sylvia Simons of Lebanon, Oregon. It was purchased at M.E. Woodcock & Sons Buick & Cadillac, in Corvallis Oregon in 1959, the original title comes with the car given back as a Souvenir. The Simons sold the car to the Second owners, in the early 1980’s in Lebanon, Oregon, after being parked in the Simons extra garage for around 15-20 years, at this time the Simons had only put 36K original miles on it, the new owners couldn‘t believe how well preserved it was for an original car. They took it home, got it all cleaned up, had a nice little tune-up performed on it, and touched up the paint on the motor, not a very well done job of painting with overspray and now its pealing and revealing the original paint underneath. The second owners drove it around for a few years in nice summer weather, putting about 2,000 miles on it. Eventually they parked the Buick in their barn, keeping up registration til 2000, but it never saw the light of day, until her Grandson got the car out and cleaned it up some, and they decided to sell it. I do not have any proof documented proof of mileage, but my experience with preservation cars leads me to believe all is true and real about the car being original. By closely examining the amount of wear on the gas pedal, brake pedal, steering wheel, and the drivers side of the seat it becomes very apparent that this car probably does have 38,000 original miles on it. The carpet worn on the drivers front is the only sign of major wear in the interior. The paint is mostly original, on the passenger side, below the beltline trim, the bottom of the door and bottom of the qaurter panel has been repainted, this was done a long time ago, probably in the 60's or 70's, using a paint meter it appears there must have been a surface scratch or dent in that wheel arch, there are no visable signs of the damage or repair when looking at the inner wheel well area. The original license plates are still on the car, confirmed as original by the original souvenir title, 8J-8046, as issued to the car in 1959. The front plate almost looks brand new, excellent condition, not faded or beat by bugs and road pebbles, this also leads me to believe the 38K original miles. The paint on the car, has aged, but overall it is very nice for a preservation car. It looks best out in the sun, but spotting and dullness are more noticeable in the shade, it has great patina and is very presentable, Having gone over the car with a paint meter, I can positively say that other than the pass rear quarter are below the belt line, the rest of the paint is original. Most people wouldn't even notice the old repair, unless I were to point it out, even then I find it hard to tell. It does have some small chips and scratches, the roof has some spotting and blemishes, has little water stains and such. There are some areas where the paint has chipped and some small areas of surface rust have formed, this is nothing serious and could be taken care of easily while preserving the original paint on the car. This is a true time capsule preservation vehicle that should NOT be repainted, they are only original once. There are no major signs of rust on the body that I can see, a few surface things, but no bubbles, quarters panels look excellent, fenders, doors. The Chrome and bright work are in very good condition. The bumpers look very nice for their age. The stainless could use a good buffing, but overall is in nice condition. There is a light crease on the driver side eyebrow above lights. There is a small dent, on the bottom of the rocker molding, on the passenger side, below the Buick Emblem rocker molding. The grill area is in excellent shape the headlight buckets, all look very nice. There mirrors have some pitting in them, this car came with dual mirrors. The Electra was the top of the line for 2dr hardtops. The front windshield has been replaced, the original it is cracked pretty bad, I have saved the original windshield in a box because it has an Elks Club Sticker from the 1960’s Lebanon Chapter on the passenger side, I have not yet figured a way of safely removing it and transferring it to the new windshield. This is a great original car with no rust, solid floors, factory under coating, and having not being driven very often, helped the car stay original and preserved throughout its life. This is probably one of the finest examples available in original condition if not the finest! The interior is original to the car. The seat material, is the same exact as the rear, same material on the door panels, the headliner is like new. The arm rest has been recovered on the drivers side, and the rear parcel shelf has been recovered as well, the carpet is worn and discolored but really not bad at all. The seats are in good shape, not brittle or fragile very much like new. It is a very impressive interior, all the chrome is very nice. The gauges all work, the instrument cluster lens is crystal clear. The buzzer for the speed sensor works, but the speedometer is off about 15mph, so when it says you are going 85, you are going 60. The emergency brake red light turns on. The only things not functioning are the the windshield wipers, the radio turns on and works, but at full volume you can barely hear anything coming from the speakers, I don’t know if it is being caused by the head unit itself or a bad speaker. The key works in the ignition, you put key in the on position, there is a push button next to ignition, and start the car, I am not sure if this is original, but it works. The turn signals, brake lights, running lights, interior lights, headlights, bright lights, and yes the heater and horn work excellent, and yes the Cigarette lighter is working as well. The engine starts right up, and needs to warm up a few minutes, but it has very good oil pressure according to the gauge. The engine has very good power, it does not burn any oils and does not blow smoke of any kind. The exhaust is in good shape, but the drivers side muffler as a couple little holes in it at the bottom. The second owners, had the engine repainted, when they bought it to touch it up, but truly not a good job. Overall the engine compartment looks in nice shape. Notice the Chalk marks on the firewall still, and the original Trico Windshield wiper filler. It appears that the engine has never been out of the car, and still has the little clips on the exhaust manifolds, usually they disappear down the line with repairs. It probably could use a good tune up, it has not been touched. When you go to start it cold, you have to give it a couple of pumps on the throttle, but then she fires up nicely and stays running. The transmission shifts nicely it is the original, Twin Turbine Automatic, it behaves properly as it should. I have driven the car in heavy traffic conditions and on the highway and it performs very nicely. Since we have had the car the only repair we have made other than the windshield was having the power brake unit rebuilt, the brakes are touchy but function well. It is very usable and drive-able in its current condition. It does have new Uniroyal White Wall Tires on it, and they look great on the car The undercarriage and trunk area looks very nice. The floors are in excellent shape, factory undercoating on them. There are no signs underneath of the the car of rust, or weak spots. The body mounts all look very good. The frame is in excellent shape no rust issues as well. Very original underneath of the car, appears untouched for the most part. It does have new shocks all the way around the car as well. The trunk liners are all original including the spare tire and jack and lug wrench. I cannot overstate the originality of this car, please feel free to contact me with any questions and request for detail photos, I will be happy to provide as much information as I possibly can. Thank you for your interest!
