Vehicle Detail

DESCRIPTION / HISTORY OF THE AUSTIN PRINCESS LIMOUSINE- The Austin A135 Princess Long Wheelbase Limousine (DM4) was introduced in 1952. The automatic transmission and power steering from Princess IV were fitted from 1956. The marque name was changed from Austin to Princess in August 1956 and then to Vanden Plas The long wheelbase models continued to be built by hand in limited numbers each year as the Vanden Plas 4-Litre Princess Limousine, until 1968. British Motor Holdings had brought BMC and Jaguar together, and stopped development at Vanden Plas of the potential successor car. The limousine in its day was luxuriously appointed with lots of polished wood, optional Mohair rugs and radio with controls in the armrest. Among the long list of available extras were monograms and a flagstaff. The driving compartment was separated from the rear of the car by a glass division with an optional telephone for the passengers to communicate with the driver. The driving seat was finished in leather but the rear seats were trimmed in cloth, the usual arrangement on many luxury cars of the time. Though not as durable as leather, cloth was considered kinder to passengers' clothes. To increase seating capacity two occasional seats could be folded out of the floor. The car has independent coil suspension at the front with semi elliptic leaf springs and anti roll bar at the rear. You are bidding on a rolling chassis that steers that has had about 150 hours of body work done on it and has no engine or transmission. Body has been completely stripped of paint except front cowl. Body is down to bear metal and in primer on trunk because trunk hinges are all new. The body has no rust or rot. The trunk and doors have been removed and frames are re-enforced and refitted. They open and close perfectly and all steps have been replaced. The aluminum body has been reinforced everywhere and insulation and sound deadener has been installed. All windows are present including all door windows, rear and front windshield. Interior parts and pieces are all here and boxed including side panels, door panels, jump seats and rear seat. Front seat is installed. Front and rear bumpers and door handles and bright work are present and ready to be re-chromed. You need to power with a modern engine and transmission. Old are not reliable if you can even find themChassis rolls and steers fine. No reserve winning bid takes it to restore. Has clear title. Rare car completely restored it will be priceless
