Vehicle Detail
According to the previous owner this 1967 230SL was totaled in 1979 and was purchased with an Iowa “salvage title” in 1979 from a local yard Because it has a salvage title it can be restored, inspected and titled as a rebuilt car or used as a parts car. The car was hit in the front end. The front end was repaired and replaced with an entire new front clip, using Mercedes OEM parts. A copy of the repair bill comes with the car along with many other bills showing all the work that was done and the parts that were replaced. (Over 10K) Restoration continued over several years and then the car was stored with no work being done because of the previous owner’s health. I acquired the car when I purchased a large amount of 107 chassis parts (450SL) from the previous owner. He wanted to sell everything he had because of his health. I am not an expert on the 230SL but I have attempted to describe the car as best I can. I am sure I could do quite well parting the car out and selling it that way but would rather sell it as a complete car. The car is complete. Nothing is missing. The car is in a grey primer. The body is in fair condition and looks straight, but will need work to finish it. The car has two tops. The hard top is dark blue and in very good condition with only a small dent in the lower corner on the driver’s side. The top interior is good and has all the wood trim. The headliner is in fair shape. The convertible frame works well and the top is a blue German canvass. It could be cleaned and used. The rear window is fogged but could possibly be polished out? The headlights and tail lights are complete. All the instruments, clock, radio, speedometer, tachometer, instrument cluster and wood trim are there. The leather on the dash is in good condition. The exterior body chrome trim pieces, which I understand are hard to find, are complete and in very good shape. Both front and rear bumpers and grill are complete and usable as is. I put a battery in the car to test the engine and it is free and turns over. I have not tried to start the car as the gas tank was out of the car when I got it (included) The wood trim is in good condition with nothing broken or cracked. It will need refinishing. The car also has a factory FrigeKing air conditioner. The door panels and other leather trim is in good condition. The seats were recovered by Bill Hirsh in September of 1987 using MB345 Blue leather. (Invoice is included) They have never been used in the car. .The window glass is OEM and in good condition. The rockers look to have been replaced as well as the rear lower quarters and the tail panel. The under carriage shows surface rust. It looks to me that the area on one side of the hood where the hood hinge bolts was destroyed trying to get the bolts out and will need repair or a different hood. The exhaust system is partially there from the headers back to the muffler. The original muffler is there and looks to be usable, however the system needs to be replaced. I can’t attest to the brakes. The car rolls free and I suspect that the driveshaft has been disconnected Some repairs were made to the floor as there are several metal patches in the floor. There are several small holes in the floor pan corners that the floor patches didn’t cover.. The tires look good and hold air, but time may have taken a toll on them. All the wheels have trim rings and MBZ hubcaps . Please ask any questions before bidding-309-235-4380. Buyer is responsible for all cost of the removal and transporting the car. I will assist with making pickup and transportation arrangements. A $500 non-refundable deposit is required within twenty- four (24) hours of auction end payable to my Pay Pal account... Remaining balance is to be paid within 7 days by bank wire or other guaranteed funds. Title plus other papers and invoices verifying work done on the car will be turned over to the person collecting the car after the balance of the funds have cleared. All sales are final with the car being sold “As is, Where Is”.
