Vehicle Detail
I've decided to sell this '97 540i as I have too many cars and am no longer driving this one. It has 260K+ miles, but are mostly highway miles. Before I parked this car at the beginning of winter, I was primarily using this car for commuting to and from work in Grand Rapids, MI. (About 120 miles each way). I parked this car with the intentions on repairing the little bit that it needs, but my job doesn't allow me the time anymore. So, I've decided to sell this car, and have priced it to move fast. Anyone who has owned or driven a BMW 540i knows that these cars are SERIOUS performers! They're capable of reaching 60 MPH in around 6 seconds, and can reach a top speed of 155 MPH. They seat 5 comfortably, and are great for taking long trips. I've done some work on this car, and it still needs a bit more work to bring it back up to par. The drivetrain is this car still works and runs good. The engine is strong, and pulls HARD - while the transmission shifts as it should with no slipping. I bought this car about 5 years ago from a dealership in Manhattan, and brought it up to northern Michigan. (This is NOT a rusted away northern Michigan car). In the time that I've owned it, I've replaced many parts with OEM parts. Some of the good things about the car and things that have been replaced already include: -Updated HALO projector headlights with LED HALO's (driver's side lens has some small cracks)-Smoked taillights-Clear side marker lights-Tinted windows-New OEM Behr radiator-New OEM Behr overflow bottle and cap-Updated rims (original rims come with the vehicle, but I believe 3 are slightly bent)-Good tread on the tires-New OEM front bumper ($1000 alone)-New OEM rear bumper ($900 alone)-New OEM PCV valve-Replaced valve cover gaskets, and painted valve covers black-Always used Castrol Syntec 0W30 synthetic (German Castrol) oil and Mann filters-The title is clean and clear NOT rebuilt or salvage! There are some things that need repair or attention that I either didn't get around to or just didn't have the time to fix yet. Some are small things that can be repaired as you feel like fixing them, while others need repaired right away. I'll separate those into two lists. Things that need repaired right away:-Driver's side outer tie rod end (slight movement can be felt on the driver's side)-Catalytic converters need replaced (or eliminated) (Check engine light is on, and engine power is reduced)-One of the wheel speed sensors (ABS light stays on)-Air bag light is on (I believe it's the passenger seat sensor - a common BMW problem)-Hood latches need replaced (I'm including a set with the car - you just need to put them on) The car can be driven as it is, as I used it for my primary commuting car to work with these things wrong with it. However, it doesn't drive like a BMW 540i should until these items can be replaced. Other items that need repaired but don't affect the drivability of the car are as follows: Things that could be repaired at the owner's discretion:-Fuel pump was replaced, but the jet pump isn't working properly (I don't think the fuel pump module was installed properly - I'm including the original)-Passenger front window regulator (common BMW problem)-Inside driver's rear door handle (door opens from the outside)-Trunk button on the outside of the trunk (button still works, but the "handle" of the button fell apart)-Glove box handle is missing (glove box still can be opened and closed, but needs a new handle)-Front and rear cup holders are broken/missing (common BMW problem)-Moon roof slides open but doesn't tilt (common BMW problem - broken plastic "tabs")-Pixels on the instrument cluster display don't work properly (common BMW problem - all other pixels on the radio and heater work)-Radio has a couple of bulbs burnt out (still readable at night, just worthy of a mention)-Missing A/C fan (seized up, and removed while replacing the front bumper - I never got around to replacing it)-Surface rust starting on the driver's door, fender, and some spots on the trunk, hood, and fuel filler (sand and re-paint) (NO RUST UNDER THE CAR!)-Seat switch plastic panels have come detached from the front seats (seat switches still work)-Driver's side heated seat doesn't stay on (I never looked into the cause of this problem)-The trunk is missing the ski pass through and trim as the previous owner had a subwoofer box in the trunk PLEASE NOTE: The hood is opened slightly in the pics, as I didn't latch the hood completely before taking the pictures. The hood does close properly and latches as it should. That's everything that I could think of that needs attention or repair to bring the car back to the standards that a luxury car should be. Overall, the interior and exterior of the car is solid, and still looks pretty good. As with any car with over 250K miles on it, it does show wear from being used - but still has plenty of life left. For someone who knows how to work on these cars, and don't mind putting in a little wrench time - this car is a bargain! This is a perfect car for someone who is looking for a premium BMW at a used Chevy price. I'd like to see this car go to someone who will appreciate it as much as I have, and who is able to give it the care it needs. That said, I have the Buy It Now price set low for both a fast sale - and to help offset the cost of some of the parts that I know it needs. I have the reserve set for half of what could easily be made by parting the car out, so if someone wanted to buy it just to part it out - there is still quite a bit of room for a profit to be made. I also have this car sale locally, and I reserve the right to end this auction at any time without prior notice if the car sells. Please feel free to send me a message with any questions, and thank you for looking!
