Vehicle Detail
This 1972 Mercedes 250c is a great driver's car. It's not going to win any awards but has a lot of potential to be fixed up along the way to do so. I purchased this less than a year ago with the idea of fixing it up over time. My requirements when I was in the market were for a car that looked great on the outside, was OK/good on the inside, and it had to be something I could drive without worry. I was not in the mood for something that I had to work on to just get it on the road; this fit the bill perfectly. And in the time that I have had it I fixed some bits here and there and what I didn't fix I pick up most of the parts needed. I installed rare (and expensive) euro headlights which look great but disabled the from side running lights. The original headlights are included for the new owner to reinstall. I am also including a pair of Weber bolt-on carbs!!! These are supposed to make the car run even better than with the Zeniths with better fuel economy. The Zeniths currently installed run great and I have had no need to install the Webers. A new transmission fluid filter is included. The previous owner replaced the rear brake calipers and pads. Under very heavy braking there is a slight shudder from the front rotors. I intended on replacing all 4 rotors and 4 sets of pads but never got around to it since the car brakes fine as-is and the shudder really isn't that big of a deal or bothered me. All brake components are included with the sale. Speaking of brakes, I recently had a new master cylinder installed. I felt that the original one may have been leaking and best to be safe than sorry. The front seat belts were recently replaced. These were purchased from SeatBeltsPlus.com. I actually bought one set, installed them (currently in the car), didn't like them and bough a new set. The second set had not been installed and are included with the purchase. I also have the owner's manuals and other various books that came with the car and lots of service records from the previous owner. The car does have a lien as I have a loan for it via my bank. This will be paid off once a buyer agrees to make the purchase via a $500 non-refundable deposit. While it runs, drives, and stops just fine there are a few things that the new owner should know does not work: 1. The ignition "start" is not currently working. This means that the ignition is just used to turn the car on and off and not to enable the starter. This was an issue that the previous owner bypassed by installing a separate starter button. I never had a problem with this (and the car can still not be started without the key) but it is something worth pointing out. 2. There is an A/C compressor but I do not believe it works. The clutch does enable but I do not remember any cold air being emitted. It may just need to be charged but I only ever drove in cooler weather. 3. There are holes in the trunk on the left side (see picture) where the previous owner had issues with the trunk seal leaking. I have heard this is a typical problem with these cars. The previous owner replaced the seal and sprayed a rust inhibitor in the trouble areas. I have never had water issues anywhere in the car although it was only in the rain, at most, 3 times since I have owned it. 4. The driver's side seat has a broken cross-member which causes it to be slanted. A replacement driver's side seat is included in the purchase. It is tan so the new owner would need to swap the upholstery. 5. The cluster has some issues: The odometer has recently decided to give up. When I bought it it was working, then was intermittent, then it stopped incrementing. The odometer was accurate when I bought it and the mileage actual. I estimate that I have driven 200 more miles than the odometer currently states. Also the temp gauge is not working. It appears to be frozen at ~175 degrees. The clock and cluster lights to not work. This may just be a power lead being disconnected or a fuse I can't fine. Lastly the gear indicator is not hooked up. This should just be a cable that came loose but I did not fiddle with it. A separate gauge cluster is included in the same. 6. The turn signal lever does not always stay in place when activating the signals and thus they do not always stay on when you let go of the lever. You must hold it in place to keep the signal on. 7. There are other smaller bits that will need updating/refinishing as you can imagine on a 42year old car but the list above are the major ones that stand out. This really is a great classic car that looks great but isn't one you're afraid to drive around. And from what I can tell they are starting to go up in price and rightfully so! From Wikipedia's stats there were only about 40,000 coupes compared to 2 MILLION sedans models. I encourage interested buyers to get in touch with me to schedule a time to see the car in person. Note that there is no warranty at all. It is a 40+ year car and will have some wear and deficiencies outside of what was described. I also reserve the right to take does this auction if the car is sold locally. I will help anyway I can with shipping but have never shipped a vehicle or dealt with vehicle shippers. The buyer will need to pick this car up from it's location in Laurel, MD. Depending on your state, but definitely in Maryland, you will be able to obtain tags without an inspection and could drive this car home! Not sure I would drive it cross-country just yet but it is road worthy.
