This 1992 Mercedes-Benz 600SEL is truly an intriguing automobile. Rare from birth - being the first V12 engine sedan Mercedes-Benz ever created - this soon-to-be classic example of Mercedes engineering stands apart from its peers due to its impeccable original condition and alleged storied past. Its sticker price in 1992 is the inflation adjusted equivalent today of nearly $250,000!!! As you can see from the pictures, the vehicle has lived a pampered existence its entire life SPANNING ONLY 99,446 ORIGINAL MILES!!! It clearly shows. You will be hard pressed to find a lower mileage, unmolested 1992 “V12.” My grandfather was an automobile collector, and he passed away recently of pancreatic cancer. Being the family car guru, I have slowly been selling off his collection. Given my close relationship with him, I have intimate knowledge of all his vehicles - including this one. Before Grand Dad acquired his 600SEL, the Memphis dealership provided him with the name of the previous owner – a Memphis vascular surgeon who was a car buff, collected several rare Mercedes, and enjoyed racing Porsches as a hobby. Grand Dad successfully reached out to the doctor, and the doctor confirmed that he had lovingly owned the car for over eleven years and replaced/repaired a countless number of parts on the vehicle during his ownership. The doctor explained that he had purchased the car from a fellow Porsche club racer from California that he competed against for years. The California owner was the original owner, and he lovingly cared for the car until the year 2000 when he passed it along to his Memphis friend. The Doctor also told Grand Dad that he had actually traded the car in roughly 1.5 years previously. The dealership confirmed this and admitted that the owner had driven the car as a personal vehicle while maintaining it in inventory. The technology and creature comforts that this car possesses are truly remarkable provided its 22+ year age. It has dual airbags, traction control, anti-lock brakes, power tilt/sliding sunroof, adjustable sport/comfort suspension, active button-controlled charcoal air filtration, power rear sunshade, power tilt/telescopic steering wheel, power adjustable interior rear view mirror, power folding exterior rear view mirrors, power operated rear parking guidance rods, 4-door power assist closing doors, dual climate control, dual paned glass side windows, individually adjustable power and heated rear seats, heated, 3 position memory, and orthopedically adjusting front seats, a concert sound system, in-dash telephone system, lighted rear seat vanity mirrors, the original first aid kit, and the list goes on. The stereo has been updated to a Pioneer Avic-D3 audio unit with navigation, traffic update, blue tooth and rear view camera ability. When the valet pulls up with this car, it truly feels great to say, "that's mine." The paint is original, and while not without imperfections, shines brilliantly due to its consistent garaged state. Living in the mild, California climate for nearly half of its life, and the mild Memphis climate for the rest, the vehicle is 100% Rust Free. The black leather interior is absolutely beautiful. The nicely preserved, original burled walnut wood shines brilliantly and looks great with the exception of some cracking on the shifter console area. You will not be disappointed. The bad news is that that vehicle has recently entered “Limp Mode.” The car will start but appears to only be running on half of its power. It will only respond to throttle beyond half-peddle, and even then, the car is not suitable for daily travel given its illness. Mercedes-Benz of Memphis has analyzed the car and suggested replacing the dual ignition caps and rotors to the tune of $1,500 plus tax. However, the family has spent enough on this beautiful creature already, and we have determined it best to sell it. The car is eagerly awaiting a new owner – It deserves to be restored to its true glory, and my sincerest wish is that someone will give it a chance. We are realistic though, and fully welcome a parts car buyer as well. I guarantee it's the finest condition 1992 600SEL parts car in the entire USA. Detailed Issues With the Car: the engine is in "Limp Mode," there is typical cracking in some places on the center console wood, there is a broken hood release handle (chord still can be pulled open though), the power trunk closer is not pulling the trunk down completely (trunk still closes shut though), the power aerial antenna is broken off and can easily be replaced, and there is some chipping paint on the front bumper. Grand Dad performed regular scheduled maintenance as outlined by the factory service manual (i.e.oil&filter changes, air filter, cabin air filter, transmission flush with new filter & gasket, brake flush, coolant flush, air suspension fluid flush, etc..).The major repairs the Doctor said he had performed were: 2 new Electronic Throttle Actuators, 2 new Throttle Position Sensors, 2 new ECU units, a new Water Pump, a new Radiator, a new Cooling Fan Clutch, a new A/C Dash Control Module, a new Parking Brake Control, 4 new Air Ride Shocks, and a new vacuum pump for the self closing doors (which all 4 work). Please note the vehicle was NOT driven 60K miles in 15 months. The Auto Check does a poor job of providing accurate details of the ownership record for this car - and it can be a bit misleading. On 2/22/2013, a duplicate title was requested by the dealer who sold Grand Dad the car. Duplicate titles display the mileage the car had BEFORE the last owner purchased it. The last owner was the Memphis Doctor, who purchased the car in Feb./Mar 2000 with 26,375 miles on it.As some may know, Mercedes started making the W140 models with instrument clusters that had analogue odometers. Various problems with them called for replacement under warranty. All warranty replacement instrument clusters had digital odometers. The CARFAX reflects this, and I will e-mail it to you if you like.According to the Vehicle Master Inquiry (VMI) from Mercedes - which provides a list of repairs performed on the vehicle while under warranty - the original owner in California complained about the instrument cluster being loose. So on 7/12/1994, the instrument cluster was replaced by Mercedes with a digital odometer and the mileage of 18,681 miles was flashed to represent the correct mileage on the new digital replacement cluster. So the mileage on the car is accurate. Also, the picture of the odometer was taken with the key in position 2 to illustrate two things: 1. To show the mileage on the vehicle. 2. To show the warning lights working. Those lights do not stay on when the vehicle is started with the exception of the ASR light due to the Limp Mode. Please feel free to e-mail me with any questions you may have. I will be more than happy to provide further information. Thank you very much for your interest. PLEASE SEE THE HAGERTY.COM WEBSITE TO VIEW WHAT THESE VEHICLES ARE INSURED FOR. THIS VEHICLE IS EASILLY A CONDITION 3 CAR which is insured for $8,200.
