I bought this car from the 2nd owner in 1998 and drove in from Florida to California with no problems. I basically put it in storage and 2 years ago figured it was time to get it going. I found a very experience Studebaker mechanic and we got started. He got it started and said it really smokes which it did. I was surprised since it hadn't done that before. So the engine was rebuilt. Bored .040 over and crank .010/.010 under. New Camshaft, hardened valve seats,squared deck,balanced rotating assembly I used small dished pistons to lower the compression ratio. We figure 9.5 to 1 and 296 CI. The transmission was removed and resealed. I order Turner disk brakes for the front and Simmons stainless exhaust bolts to R-3 headers. New fuel pump, distributor, new engine and transmission mounts. We repaired the inner fender fiber glass battery box with stainless hold-down. The engine compartment was treated with Lizard Skin both for heat and sound proofing. When I first drove it there was a lot of looseness in the front end so we put in $1600 worth of new parts. There was an open seam on the driver seat but the vinyl was too hard to fix it so new upholstery on both front seats. The windshield had wiper scratches so new windshield. The power steering control was replaced along with the power steering hoses. Also the power steering pump was replaced. Orginal radiator was boiled out along with surge tank. However the surge tank continue to leak so it was removed. The original carburetor wasn't doing the job so new Edlebrock was installed. I wanted larger radial tires so installed Mopar wider 15" wheels with Firestone P215/R70 15 narrow white walls.
