Vehicle Detail
Up for sale is a rare 1949 Lincoln Cosmopolitan with suicide doors that is in all original condition. It has the big 337 cubic inch flathead with a three-speed trans on the column. The body is in great condition given its age, with near perfect sheet metal. As you can see in the pictures, it has some very light surface rust but no major dents in it. There are a couple of very small dings on the right rear quarter (small fingernail size) but that is all. The paint is the original colors and this car has great patina. My plan was to shoot clear over the current paint to keep it all original - yes, it's that cool! This car has a clear title and runs and drives like a champ! Here's what I've done: I've installed all new tinted side glasses ($400), painted the wheels red and installed brand new wide white walls ($500), rebuilt the carburetor, replaced all the old metal fuel lines with brand new metal lines, had the gas tank completely reconditioned ($500 with lifetime guarantee), installed a brand new gas tank sending unit, put on a new starter solenoid switch, put in a new 6-volt battery, installed all new hydraulic hoses for the hydraulic windows, put on a new brake master cylinder, new brake hydraulic hoses (with brass washers), all new metal brake lines (front to rear), installed all new wheel cylinders, drained/flushed/replaced the gear oil in the rear end, drained/flushed/replaced the gear oil in the transmission, put in new external front/rear fuel filters (one after the tank and one before the carb), it has a fresh oil change, a fresh tune-up (plugs/cap/rotor/points), and I cleaned all of the grease zerks and lubed the entire car. This car starts right up and drives like a champ. It goes through all the gears and doesn't smoke when it drives. The exhaust needs to be replaced and the interior needs to be replaced. All of the seat springs are there and are in good condition, and the original door panels are all present. The rear windshield (all three pieces) is in great condition, but the front windshield has some BB holes in it. The only rust I've found in the vehicle, and I've checked it from top to bottom, is in the trunk (imagine that!) and on the right rear floorboard where water got under the floor trim panel because the window was down when the hydraulic hoses leaked. That's it, the car is otherwise a rust free Texas car that ended up in Oklahoma/Missouri. I've tried to describe this car as exhaustively as possible. If you have any questions, please ask them during the auction so that I can answer them before the end of the auction. The car can be easily driven onto a transport, trailer, etc., and I'll be happy to help with shipping, but you are completely responsible for all shipping costs. I'll happily store the vehicle until you can pick it up as long as it is fully paid for at the end of the auction. Please note that I have all of the receipts and a good clean title for the purchaser. I only put 999,999 miles in the listing because frankly I have no idea what the mileage on this car is. On Mar-05-14 at 09:31:48 PST, seller added the following information: I have had a tremendous amount of interest in this car, along with a surge in questions, so I'm going to try and provide some additional information based upon the questions I am receiving. Please keep the questions coming as I try very hard to describe my items as thoroughly as possible, but it's impossible to think of everything. I have had well over 500 auctions with 100% feedback rating, which is thanks to my efforts to always describe the good AND the bad! I would not show up where the car is stored and expect to drive it home. Yes, it runs and drives but I haven't taken it out on the highway for long trips or anything like that. I was working on it more to make it a driver to local car shows. That being said, I've taken it up to highway speed but just not for long distances. But I'll tell you, it's fun to drive. Talk about a car that gets lots of looks! It's got the old cloth covered wiring that I've started separating and wrapping with electrical tape as I've found problem spots. It's pretty typical in that it doesn't take much for it to disintegrate in certain parts of the car. In other areas of the car the wiring is very solid and can be readily handled without worry. I have to admit it is in pretty decent condition overall. I do have 2/3 of the air cleaner but it is missing the middle section. I didn't realize that until I saw a picture of a 49 with the air cleaner intact. I may have it somewhere and just don't realize it. If so, it and any other parts associated with the car will be yours, but there are no other missing parts that I know of. When we topped off the radiator the other day we noticed it leaked up high. Could have been that way all along for all I know. I've only owned the car about a year and was doing what I could when I had time, as I do not live in the same city where the car is stored. Anyway, there are no other areas that leak antifreeze. I've never gotten around to testing any of the gauges, lights, etc. on the car. I guess I was more interested in getting it running/driving before I worried about the micro aspects of things. In particular, I concentrated on redoing the fuel system, redoing the brake system (did not replace the brake shoes), replacing the hydraulic hoses for the windows, rebuilding the carb, tuning it up, getting new side glass in it, etc. It's a pretty solid old car that needs a full interior (seats recovered, carpet, headliner, door panels, etc.) and attention to the details. It has a very good body with some trunk rust and right rear floor rust where the door sill plate was. Underneath, I couldn't find any rust and other than a few small dings in the body, she's pretty good. I did notice that the driver window was down last week. Since the window hydraulic hoses are all new I'm guessing it's the seal on that window cylinder. I also had one guy mention the tires. Yes, they are dirty. That's because since I purchased them a year ago they have been mounted/balanced and also on and off the car multiple times as I worked on it. However, they have nearly no miles on them and are road ready. That being said, it wouldn't take more than a few minutes to clean the whitewalls. There is a key with the car and the starter button on the dash works properly. The trunk lock was apparantly broken and a previous owner pulled it out. I purchased a new lock with key on ebay that goes with the car. Finally, this car does have a clean title that is ready for your name!
