Vehicle Detail
Auction is for a 1938 Studebaker Commander State 4 door sedan. The Commander State had the art deco style front headlights and the upgraded interior the same as the President. This is the classic car from the 1930's with the suicide rear door and the huge rear seat. Car is equipped with the original Studebaker 6 cylinder flat head engine with a 3 speed floor mounted shifter. Car appears to be completely stock. Car is in driveable condition and we've driven it to local shows or cruise ins. I would not recommend making a long trip. Longest trip we took was about 200 miles in one day. A comfortable cruising speed is about 50 mph. You can drive the car as is or it is ready to be restored or made into a street rod. I purchased the car in 2008 after it had been sitting for several years. The gas tank was removed and the top cut off to pressure clean the inside and remove all the rust and build up. The inside was also chemically cleaned and treated. A new top was welded back on. The brakes were completely disassembled and rebuilt. However since it's not been used regularly the master cylinder has developed a small leak. Brakes still work great but need to check master cylinder ever couple of months. The engine was tuned up with new plugs, points, condenser, cap, rotor and wires. A new fuel pump was installed. A new battery was installed about 2010. Car starts right up even after sitting for a long period of time. The engine runs good with good oil pressure. Has about 20 psi at hot idle. Only problem is it makes a knocking sound that appears to be coming from front of the engine. I know on these old Commander 6 engines the timing gears sometimes make the knocking noise. It doesn't seem to get louder or make any difference if its warm or cold. I've driven it for the last couple of years with no problems. Car also has an aftermarket heater that works great. Has a vent in front of windshield that opens up to let air inside in warmer weather. Also, if you look at the pictures you'll notice the incorrect wheels and hubcaps. I will be putting the original wheels and hub caps back on the car before it is sold. The tires on the car and the original tires need to be replaced. They hold air but are old and weather cracked. The bolt pattern is a 5 x 5 Chevy pattern. The body is very solid with the only appreciable rust inside of the trunk area up near the spare tire. The body was repainted some time ago and in spots the paint is flaking off. The running boards are very solid but the rubber covering has deteriorated. New rubber running boards are available through a Studebaker parts vendor if you decide to replace. I was going to strip and paint with a bed liner material. Glass and rubber on car are old and need to be replaced if you are going to restore. The interior appears to be original but has some water stains. There is no carpet currently in car. The wire harness needs to be replaced. I've made a wire harness from the generator to the battery to keep the battery charged and I've run a separate circuit for the brake lights so they work. Headlights work occasionally. Car is located in Spartanburg, South Carolina and appointments can be arranged for a test drive or inspection.
