Vehicle Detail
1971 Ford Torino GT, 351 Cleveland 4V, 4 speed toploader, ribbon tach, a/c – factory. I purchased her in Fresno, California in about 1982, the guy said he got from original lady owner. While attending Chico State I saw an add by Speed-O-Motive for factory 2V short blocks for $295.00, I called the guy said the Pro-Stock racers were switching to Austrialian blocks and they were getting rid of their supply, he said with my 4V heads the compression ratio would be 9.8:1, I ordered one. Back then I wanted to keep her all Ford, so I ordered the biggest SVO cam from Ford catalog, good lifters, double roller timing chain and moly rings. Upon inspection I found that during shipping a rod bolt had been broken so I replaced all with HD rod bolts and had heads rebuilt. I kept stock ignition and intake manifold, a “friend” talked me into a Holley 780 double pumper. I installed with new stock clutch and broke her in easy/right. Then I moved to Moscow, Idaho for law school. She didn’t go in the snow so was parked for winter. Although one day while driving from Moscow to Troy, Idaho, a little old lady was in front of me on highway going 50 mph, I went from 4th to 2nd and punched it, I thought the clutch was slipping until I looked in rear view mirror – tire smoke. Later I took to mom’s in California and picked up old pickup. On that trip I got 9 mpg from Idaho to California. She was last licensed in 1990 and has been parked/stored since. I would start her every so often, then joined Army and was gone for awhile, came back to see dent on passenger front fender, family said must have been a deer, must have been stout deer, although dent was suspiciously consistent with step-dad’s riding mower. Later moved back to Idaho, while gone with Army, now Ex-wife would move her out of garage to make room for yard sale treasures… The paint looks funny because I was trying to buff paint out enough to drive on weekends, tried a few different products, none work. The rear part of headliner fell, then last weekend I discovered that both front floorboards are rusted – some tears there. The tires, Dunlop GT Qualifiers are circa 1983 or so, still holding air but I wouldn’t drive on them. The dent on driver’s side front was there when purchased. I was worried about left lower rear window but no change since purchase. The battery corroded the inner wheel well so I moved it to trunk – street racers did that back then. I drained the gas tank, put in fresh gas and Stabil, sprayed the carb with cleaner, new air filter and primed carb, it started but sounded funny, the mufflers were full of acorns from Calif pack rats, I cut the mufflers off and primed carb, it started (have short video) and ran but didn’t seem to pull gas from tank, after 20 years of sitting not bad. I am selling because I have new life, new wife, Corvette, Jeep and Polaris Razor and am out doing things, no more long nights in garage. Plus all my gear head friends are dead, Sgt Ray and Donnie.
