1970 Mustang Boss 302 Concourse Gold WinnerPLEASE SEE BELOW FOR MANY ADDITIONAL PICTURES This fine boss 302 with only 84,671 miles was judged concourse gold at the Mustang Club of America West Coast Nationals. I obtained the original copy of the judging sheet. Starting with a 700 point scale, this car only had 31 points deducted, and most of them were for things that have easily been fixed such as dust on the passenger seat (-3) dust on door hinges (-1) and some incorrect nuts/bolts, very easy fixes. The only items missing from this car are the transmission-steering lock rod and the rev limiter, both are items that were frequently removed over the years. These items are available. If you would like to see a copy of the judging report I can email you a copy I truly regret selling this car, but for personal reasons I have decided to sell it. I have several other Mustangs as well, but this is the best of the bunch I have owned this car since 1990 and have the original dealer warranty card and warranty plate and under hood ID plate and the Marti Report. The car is also listed in the current Boss 302 Registry. The car is complete with the original numbers matching engine and transmission and original sheet metal. I restored the car using MANY new old stock (NOS) Ford parts collected over the past 20+ years. This car still has its original door panels that are in great shape - this is almost unheard of for Mustangs of this era. I judge the boss cars for MCA and performed a nut/bolt rotisserie restoration of this car and hate to sell it, but have other cars and things happening which prompt the sale of this car. I have a complete book of receipts for the car as well as lots of pictures taken before, during and after the restoration. I can only post a few of these on eBay, so feel free to request more pics. I will also be glad to provide a copy of the MCA judging report and the Marti report to interested buyers. Also feel free to ask any questions or send me your number so we can talk about this wonderful classic Boss 302 Mustang that was purpose built by Ford for Trans Am racing. ENGINE: The engine is the original engine that was in the car from Ford with all original components such as the correct distributor, carburetor, alternator, exhaust manifolds, intake manifold, flywheel, windage tray, unique boss 302 balancer, oil pan, engine pullies and brackets, etc. I added the rare Ford roller rockers that were designed and used in the boss 302 Trans Am cars. The engine starts right up and runs great with plenty of power!!!! Engine was hot tanked, magna fluxed and bored to .030 over with the new, expensive forged aluminum J&E pistons that were built specifically for the boss 302 to replace the original weak TRW pistons. The new J&E pistons yield a streetable 10.4:1 compression ratio to work with today’s lower octane fuel. The entire rotating assembly was balanced and blueprinted. I have pics available of the engine taken by the machinist during the process of the engine rebuild. Camshaft and lifters is the Comp Cams Nostalgia Plus Camshaft; this is basically a modern day version of the original solid lift camshaft with an advertised duration of 262/269, and .495/.495 lift. The engine runs great with this cam and those solid lifters give it that sweet original and distinctive boss 302 sound! The carburetor was rebuilt by well-known Pony Carbs; all parts were plated to original finish and then the carb was totally rebuilt with modern internal upgrades so that it runs better than new Factory original boss 302 intake and valve covers are installed. I preferred a polished look on the valve covers and polished them to a nice shine which cost a one point deduction at the show The distributor is the correct original unit and was rebuilt and blueprinted by Distributor Dynamics. The builder used the cam specs, read end ratio and other information from the car to curve the distributor for optimal performance. It also has the correct X12 vacuun advance which was restored as well. EXHAUST: The exhaust is the complete concourse correct boss 302 exhaust system just like original TRANSMISSION: The transmission is the correct numbers matching ford top loader with the correct Hurst shifter that was also rebuilt and restored to include the correct plating of the shifter rods etc. The correct Hurst T shift handle with set screw is there and in great shape. A new Centerforce clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing were installed on the correct resurfaced flywheel. All of the shift linkage, Z bar, engine and frame mounts and pedal rod were replaced with NOS parts. Cooling system: The correct boss 302 radiator was treated to a new core. The original water pump with the unique boss 302 impeller was rebuilt. The correct fan and spacer are in place. All hoses were replaced with concourse correct hoses and clamps. DRIVESHAFT: The driveshaft was completely restored with all new u-joints and the concourse correct markings, it looks brand new. REAR END: The original, correct 3:50 posi-traction gears were inspected and are like new. The housing was media blasted and completely restored with correct markings, stickers and tags. POWER DISK BRAKE SYSTEM: The brakes were completely rebuilt to include a new power brake booster, new master and wheel cylinders and front disk calipers and pad/shoes all around as well as all new brake hardware and all new stainless steel brake lines and rubber brake hoses. REAR SUPSENSION: The rear suspension has the original rear boss leaf springs that were restored. The staggered rear shocks are there and correctly detailed KYB shocks installed all around. FRONT SUSPENSION: The front suspension was restored to concourse specification with all correct concourse markings. All new parts where installed such as upper and lower control arms, all new tie rods, spring perches, ball joints, idler arm etc. The original front springs were correctly restored as well. POWER STEERING: The complete power steering system was restored by well-known restorer Rode’s Restorations and then detailed to concourse gold specifications as well. RIMS/TIRES: The magnum 500 wheels are original Ford Magnum wheels that are in great shape, notice the original Ford orange paint daubs on the rims. I was told by the original owner that he purchased these rims from the dealer and had them installed after the car was purchased. You can see the D1 part number on the rims still with the correct orange paint daub. The lug nuts are not the correct style Boss 302 lug nuts however and one point was deducted on the judging sheet. The tires are the concourse correct GT Polyglass F60-15 tires. BODY: The entire car was media blasted and then mounted on a rotisserie. All of the body panels were original. The driver side floor pan was professionally replaced as it had surface rust from the car sitting in storage for many years. The car has the correct original boss 302 fenders with the rolled edges. After media blasting, the car was sprayed with self-etch primer and minimal bodywork was done to ensure the car was laser straight before the expensive PPG base coat/clear coat grabber green paint was applied and buffed to a beautiful finish. After the car was painted the hood, deck lid and tail panel were painted with the concourse correct, rare and expensive PPG DTL 9318 semi-gloss textured paint to give it the correct factory look and texture. This is an area that many restorers overlook and use the incorrect paint which is a tough and costly item to fix later for cars wanting to compete in judged MCA shows. Once painted, the correct reflective boss 302 stripes were applied in the correct locations All new rubber seals were installed in the windows and all new weather-stripping and rubber parts around the car were also installed. The rear window lovers were restored with the correct paint and new seals with freshly chromed upper hinges and new mounting hardware. A new spoiler was also mounted on the front and an original boss 302 rear spoiler was also correctly detailed and mounted on the trunk lid as well. INTERIOR: The car is equipped with the original deluxe interior (decor group) with the in-dash fatory tachometer and fold down seat. The interior is mostly original. The dash panels were sent out to have the plastic chrome replated and as you can see in the pics it looks great. The door panels are original to the car and in great shape. The only seat that was recovered was the driver seat. The carpet and headliner were replaced. The dash pad was replaced with an NOS dash pad. A Custom Auto Sound stereo was installed and has provision for using your ipod, USB or a CD player. (I have the Ford AM 8 track that was in the car and it goes with the car) New speakers were installed in the original factory locations in the front doors and dash. System sounds great, but it was a one point deduction by the judges also as it’s not original. All of the switches were replaced in the dash and the LED lights were used to really light up the dash as original bulbs make seeing the dash at night hard to see. This was not a deduction. Two of the bulbs occasionally flicker but they are still much brighter than originals and work well. The steering wheel was also restored with a new pad, mustang emblem and horn switch. EXTERIOR: Both bumpers and all emblems were replaced with new items. The original grill and bright trim was restored. The hood trim molding was replaced with the expensive NOS piece. The driver door glass has a scratch, but frankly, most of the time the window is down so it doesn’t show. There is also a very small ding in the drip rail on the passenger side that was written up on the judging report. Panel alignment is good, but not perfect like all cars made back in the 60’s the panels don’t line up as nice as new cars today. It was written up as well. However it still presents very well and looks very straight ELECTRICAL: The original alternator was treated to a rebuild and restoration by Jack at Deadnutson - a well known restorer in the Mustang hobby. The complete wiring harness was inspected and found to be in very good condition with no repairs needed. The under hood harness does not use traditional electrical tape and as such was wrapped with the concourse correct tape and installed. All bulbs and switches were replaced. The correct boss 302 taillights were also treated to a concourse correct restoration as well. TRUNK: The trunk is correctly detailed with the correct paint overspray and rubber tips on screw ends etc. The original style burlap trunk liner and correct speckle style trunk mat are in place. The original tire inflator is installed in the unique boss 302 holder. The inflatable spare is there along with the correct jack and handle.
