Vehicle Detail
Say the name Hartge, Alpina, or Dinan to a BMW fan and you’ll get instant nods of understanding and respect. Dinan is rightfully considered America’s foremost BMW tuner. Steve Dinan’s and his Morgan Hill California-based company have been tastefully modifying BMW cars since 1979, upgrading Bimmer engines, suspensions, brakes and wheels. With only 65,000 miles this 2001 Dinan 540is shows that it has been babied though out its life. Regarding the year, the 2001 model year marked a face lift year for the e39 5-series. BMW updated the E39 with newer, clear-lens tail, side marker, and headlights which first displayed the now-popular "angel eyes." Rear tail lights were changed to "wave-guide" LEDs (Hella, the OEM, refers to these lights as "CELIS"), while the side and rear turn signals were changed from amber lenses to clear. , and the front bumper now featured rounded fog lights. Internally many changes were made to electronics; items such as window regulators and the air conditioning were updated. The front grill was also changed to a new, more pronounced design. From the factory, this 540is MT6 was one of 600 equipped with the M-Sport Package, including 17" Wheels and performance tires, firmer M-Sport suspension, M-Sport sport steering wheel, shift knob and door sills. Other factory cosmetic upgrades include Shadowline trim - a desirable glossy black trim finish. Of course the anthracite paint is a gorgeous and refined color. Silent like a bullet train, except at full throttle when you can hear the intake growl (well, it's still a BMW). The feel is rock solid at speed. The brakes are smooth and stop as they should, though some driving would make them feel better. New transmission and engine mounts ensure smooth shifting and control of the massive torque of the M62TUB44 BMW 4.4 liter V8. The car has a new clutch and dual-mass flywheel that will ensure proper clutch function for years to come. The interior is nearly spotless, but even better than you would expect for a 65,000 mile car. The stock exhaust remains on the car. The BBS Style 42 wheels have beautiful polished lips and painted faces, with a few blemishes or peeling clearcoat (I can't imagine they are perfect. I scratched my BRZ wheels at about 1,500 miles... alas it happens to all of us). While you could have the wheels refinished, you might prefer a staggered M5 set up instead. It's your choice. The peeling is very minor, you may not notice. The wheels wear good tires with plenty of tread. Cosmetically excellent, the car is remarkably clean and presentable. This 540 proudly displays the exclusive DINAN badge on the trunk. The Dinan modifications on this car include tasteful and purposeful upgrades to elevate the performance and enjoyment of this car without lessening it's comfort or reliability. This car is significantly faster than a standard 540i. It is deceptively fast because it is so quiet and smooth. Approaching corners and bends at 100mph becomes common place once you realize that you don't need to slow down to much for them, and then you are promptly going 100mph again... not that I've done this. If you've not driven a Dinan 5, you will be impressed. I still am. DINAN HIGHLIGHTS: The High Flow Carbon Fiber Cold Air Intake System develops horsepower and torque gains for faster acceleration and improved throttle response. The performance intake systems have been designed to provide improved intake airflow at the lowest possible temperatures, for greater engine efficiency and resulting power gains. The High Flow Cold Air Intake Systems replace the factory air box with a large cylindrical K&N filter and a large diameter real carbon fiber intake pipe. The filter is relocated to a separate compartment behind the front bumper and below the headlights in order to insulate it from engine compartment heat and maximize exposure to cooler outside air. Dinan claims 13HP/12TQ for this modification. Dinan's High Flow Air Flow Meter for the 540 compliments the Cold Air Intake System by further opening up the intake tract for increased power and quicker throttle response. The Dinan Air Flow Meter features a larger internal diameter and is manufactured from aluminum, as compared to the smaller plastic stock unit. The Air Flow Meter is designed to accommodate the stock electronics and comes with all of the components necessary for a clean and simple installation. The Dinan Cold Air Intake System is required when installing the Air Flow Meter, as well as specially tuned Dinan Stage 4 Engine Software. With this modification, Dinan conservatively claims the 540's 4.4 liter V8 produces 315HP/351TQ - an increase of 25HP/16TQ over the stock engine and still within the safe operating range of the engine. FYI - BMW increased power for their 540 engine in 1999 and up. The 1997 540 debuted with 282HP/320TQ and was increased by the factory to 290HP/335TQ. Dinan Strut and Shock Tower Braces help to maintain the structural integrity of the towers over the life of the vehicle, as well as providing sharper handling by reducing flex under hard cornering conditions. The Braces can be installed in conjunction with each of the Dinan Suspension Systems or with the stock components. The braces are manufactured from 6061-T6 aluminum for light weight and superior strength; and the brushed finish and carbon fiber inserts make for an attractive addition to the engine compartment and trunk. The mounting brackets are machined for precise fitment over the existing strut tower reinforcement for a clean and solid installation. I can assist with shipping in the US or worldwide from RPMVT.com.I believe the listing comes with a free Autocheck report which you can find in a tab at the top. The report shows 3 registrations. The initial, mine in LA, and mine in VT, both last year. When I registered it, I guessed wrong on the mileage, so the title says 69,000, but it is really just over 65,000 now. The car has small chips and nicks as you would expect with a 12 year old car. The AutoCheck Report shows an accident in 2007 on the right front fender, but it looks good and straight with the inside of the fender looking to be original with no evidence of damage, so my guess was that this was a very minor fender bender, or a bumper issue, the hood has some clear coat over some chips, so your guess is as good as mine. Overall the car is very clean and looks great.Recent service includes a new clutch and factory dual mass flywheel. New radiator, engine mounts, trans mounts, oil level sender, and I am sure there are other pieces that I am not remembering.
