Vehicle Detail
1970 429 Cobra Jet Ranchero GT. The hardest part about selling a car like this is making the decision to sell. But, too many toys, not enough time. So, after being in storage for a couple years, it’s out of storage to pass along to someone that will do it justice…my loss is your gain. The second hardest part is deciding price. In the past month, I’ve only been able to find 2 other genuine numbers-matching 1970 or 1971 Cobra Jet 429 Rancheros that have sold. They are just THAT RARE. This Ranchero is 1 of 24…and a survivor, with the original paint and interior. Links to those two sales below: BARRETT JACKSON (the only other survivor 429 Cobra Jet Ranchero I’ve ever seen - $60.5k) - w w w.barrett-jackson.com/application/onlinesubmission/lotdetails.aspx?ln=511&aid=466 MECUM (you have to register to see the sales price - $21k) - w w w.mecum.com/auctions/lot_detail.cfm?CFGRIDKEY=FP0912-145643 As far as condition, the pictures speak for themselves. The body, paint, and interior aren’t showroom new, but they’re what you’d expect of a 42 year old 1 in 24 car that’s been garaged it’s entire life. Very straight, very clean, very original, with a mark here and there. The plan, ultimately, was to put the car on original 15” steelies with the proper hubcaps. The 17” Mustang wheels were just meant to be temporary, but….it doesn’t look bad this way either… The drivetrain and suspension have been tastefully rebuilt with the best modern parts to make a nice, reliable driver of a car. See the list below. All of this done while keeping the OEM take-off parts in boxes. Just the parts alone are worth a few thousand… To make this Ranchero even more rare, it’s an original “black plate” car. For people not familiar with California registration rules, this means that it was originally licensed before 1970, and carries continuous registration to this day. Pretty rare to have a car that’s carried continuous registration for that long. Though I understand now-a-days you can get the DMV to remake black plates…still, these are original. DOOE-6750-B - Throughout the process of building this car, everything has been done right. To illustrate the point, an interesting part number is listed above. Kudos to anyone that recognizes that as an original Oil Dipstick. Unfortunately, the 429 Cobra Jet Dip Stick was the exact same one that was used in the 302 Boss Mustang. You can probably guess how much I paid for it…..but, it makes the car right. The one thing that the car could use is a fuelpump bypass switch. The pump is wired to flow when there’s oil pressure, as a safety (if the engine dies, the fuel pump doesn’t keep pumping). A bypass would make starting a little quicker when the car sits between weekend road trips. ENGINE / DRIVETRAIN I’m estimating 525hp with everything below. Numbers-matching engine Ford SVO SCJ aluminum heads Ford SVO roller rockers ARP bolts/studs/screws Holley 850 (same one used on SVO BBF crate engines) Longtube ceramic-coated Hooker headers. Crower 22401 mechanical-roller cam and lifters (275/284 advertised, .570"/.572" lift, 110LSA) Crower springs MSD 6A ignition and tuning parts. MSD billet mechanical/vacuum distributor MSD Coil SVO Spark Plug wires K&N Filter Edelbrock water pump Holley blue fuel pump Visteon mini-starter Original C6, rebuilt (by Mike’s Transmissions around LA) 2200 stall converter…good for daily driving, but the car is spec’d for a 3000 stall. N-case rear end with 31 spline axles…rebuilt. Posi in a box ready to be freshened and installed (3.73 or 3.55) DynoMax Mufflers Dipstick – DOOE-6750-B Billet oil pump drive. INTERIOR Ribbon tach – works 3-Point Shoulder Belt. Gauges – work Cigarette lighter – I don’t smoke, but it works Opened-Door Interior Light – works New weather stripping New headliner New carpet Gaylord bed cover Original color-coded spare tire. BONUS OEM/TAKE-OFF PARTS There’s some debate out the proper carb on these cars. Generally a Holley was on the SCJ and a Rochester on the CJ car. But I‘ve met people that swear UP-AND-DOWN their CJ came with a Holley. In this case, the previous owner was one of those guys, and the manifold that came with the car suggests he was right. Working in the automotive engine industry, and having heard stories from ex-Ford guys of the time, I’ll give you my $0.02. Back in the 1960’s, assembly line “discipline” wasn’t what it is today. Back then, sometimes, when part “A” was “supposed” to get installed, they didn’t ALWAYS install part “A”. SOMETIMES, they installed part “B”. It’s better nowadays….but even now it’s still not perfect. OEM PARTS INCLUDED Heads (can’t recall the number…still in storage) Carb - D0OF-9510-R, List 4628. Intake manifold – D0OE-9425-C Exhaust Manifold, R – D0OE-9430-A Exhaust Manifold, L – D0OE-9431-A Original 429 CJ air cleaner and lid Original finned valve covers 15 inch Sport Wheel Covers Power Steering Pump Original power steering system in a big ziplock bag (removed to install the headers). Lowering Front Springs Gaylord hard bed cover (not shown, but era correct and cool for this car). Original license plate frame from the selling dealer. Bill Morey Ford. Washer Fluid reservoir. Engine hoist brackets. A couple car-colored brackets that I don’t know where to install. Evaporative Emissions can (I think) and the brackets. Brake booster and master cylinder Horn Ignition coil Voltage regulator Box of all the old suspension parts that were replaced. On Mar-15-13 at 23:29:43 PDT, seller added the following information: Q/A added to the listing...for some reason EBAY didn't get it added.... Dear thepieces, Hello, Are you sure the OEM parts you have are the origianls? The parts you show are Super Cobra Jet parts and not Cobra Jet parts. Cobra Jets came with spread bore rochester carburetors and SCJ's came with square bore Holleys. The air cleaner you have is also a C-code SCJ air cleaner. You may want to check the VIN stamped into the back of the block matches. Very awesome Ranchero and some very rare and expensive parts to go with it. - spx1020 Dear spx1020, Hey SPX, correct. The parts with the car are the square bore parts. These are what the previous owner took off the car to put on the current stuff. As far as he knew, that is what came on the car originally. I did supply the carb, though, as he had lost the exact one from the car ( I was going to restore it at one point, but ended up just running the hi-po parts instead)...the car and engine were completely disassembled when I picked it up. I checked the VIN to the block when I bought it..matches. Trying to think of a way to photograph it then post to the ad. As far as cars being built with parts "other than spec", it's not as uncommon as I originally thought. I've met a few people that've had issues like that. One time, I had the fortune to talk with a guy that worked on Ford's 427 SOHC engine assembly line. Surprising what went on there... I also work in the engine design/manufacture industry. Even today, you don't always get what you're supposed to get. Discipline is a lot better than it was in the 60's, but still not 100%. But, at the end of the day, the best I can do is show what's here, and pass along what I know. Thanks much for the nice words. These are neat cars....I probably wouldn't be selling it if I didn't have a second one. :) - thepiecesOn Mar-18-13 at 19:55:33 PDT, seller added the following information: The car is also advertised locally.
