Vehicle Detail

For your consideration is this 1972 Volkswagon Karmann Ghia Convertible. The 72 model year was the last year the Ghia had the rear seat, it was removed in the 73/74 car because of seatbelt regulations. I am listing this Ghia for my brother, the current owner, however the car has a long history in our family. I bought the car in 1985, from the 2nd owner who had done some restoration work to the body and painted it white, from it's original factory Saturn yellow. He had also installed the chrome wheels and hubcaps with the Wolfsburg center crest..a nice touch and very hard to find now days!! This Ghia also left the factory with a AutoStick Shift transmission. When the original motor expired a period correct 4 speed manual gearbox and used engine were sourced and installed along with all the necessary items to convert the car from AutoStick to 4 speed. I drove the car on and off over the years and when my neices were of driving age they wanted to drive this cool little car...so I taught them how to drive a stick and off they went. In 2007 the used engine had seen it's better days so a new JCS 1641CC Turnkey Engine was purchased and the drivetrain all resorted (a $3900+ expense). At that same time the body was gone over and some rust issues were repaired (welding in new metal) and the car was repainted (white again) with basecoat/clearcoat paint (a $7300+ investment). The Ghia retains it's original top which looks very good but has started to separate just behind the drivers door area, we considered a new top but felt the new owner may want to make that choise, the top boot is new and this car only gets top down cruising. The seat upolstery, door panels and side panels are also orignal and have held up quiet well for their age, the dash pad and face material have been replaced over the years and although not pictured a new Black loop carpet kit with cloth binding has just been installed as well as new sunvisors. Mechanically the car is pretty sound, the brakes were gone through completely, shoes, pads, wheel cylinders and new braided hoses so it stops good, during that same repair the shifter bushings and a short shift kit was also installed. I have been driving the car a little on the weekends and I noticed the front suspension feels a bit loose and I think it will need some attention, the engine runs great once up to temperarure but is a bit cold natured on start up, so I'm sure some tweeking is in order there. The tires have good tread showing but they have some age on them and are showing dry rot cracking on the side walls. All things that would be expected from a 41 year old car that now only sees nice sunny South Carolina top down cruising. Although the car runs, drives and stops great I would not recomend a long trip home on these tires. The car spends most of its time in the garage under its fitted cover so not may miles have been put on the car since the new engine was installed and the body and paint work was done so it's time to finally let someone else enjoy this little Ghia. I have posted a nice selection of pictures for your viewing and will send you pictures of any area you want to see more of, just send me an email through ebay that includes your email address and I will get you the shots you want and answer any questions you may have.
