Vehicle Detail

YOU'RE LOOKING AT A 1983 MERCEDES 380 SEC. With a very high Classic Car Book Value. $11,000-16,000. Buy it now for a fraction of the value. MSRP $56,000 The Classic Mercedes 2 Door Full-sized Coupe. In September of 1981, the Mercedes-Benz 380 SEC made its official debut at the Frankfurt International Motor Show. The 380 SEC was part of the C-126 series of vehicles from Mercedes and was based on the S-Class sedan. The brochures for the 380 SEC read:"The Mercedes coupe embodies the rare type of a refined and sporty automobile." Info History: Since the early 1950s, Mercedes-Benz had been offering a coupe variant of its popular S-Class vehicles; However, the tradition of building the large coupe on the S-Class platform was shelved, and the 1971 to 1981 coupes were only offered with the SL architecture. The 1981 Mercedes 380 SEC marked the coupe's return to the S-Class family. The SEC 380 was produced from 1981 until 1985 when it was replaced with the 420 SEC Production: There were 3,829 380 SEC coupes produced in 1983. By 1984, production was down to 1,310, and there was a slight increase during the last year in 1985. The Mercedes 380 SEC was equipped with a 3.8-liter V-8 engine that had been revamped as part of the "Mercedes-Benz Energy Concept," which aimed to reduce pollutants and increase fuel economy. Suspension was almost identical to that on the sedans, and coupes featured a double-wishbone setup in the front. The engineers took advantage of the current safety research when building the 380 SEC and integrated many safety features into the vehicle, including a driver's side airbag. In 1981, the editors at Auto, Motor und Sport, Germany, wrote, "impressive is the handling of the car which weighs as much as 1,634 kilograms and is almost five meters long. The SEC handles like a dynamic mid-sized car and can be controlled most easily thanks to its precise power steering." The vehicle that we are offering here represents the combination of classic Mercedes sport car styling with the size ride, drive, and options of most full size high end performance cars of today. The car was purchased around 12 years ago and kept mostly inside a showroom as a not necessarily for sale vehicle. It has been driven on occasion for periods of time over the years by adult family members. It was repainted in 2001; and has been stored mostly inside since that time. The finish still cleans and shines quite well; but there still are a couple of minor runs in the navy blue paint that never felt detracted the appearance enough to repaint. The new owner may wish to do so, if the goal is to remake a car more original. The body had no rust or body rot or damage to cover; and the paint job was due to the cracked clearcoat. Today there are a couple of little rust spots beginning to show through on a rear fender. The leather interior cleans up well; but miscellaneous items have aged over the years and should be addressed. For example; although the power windows work, the switches have dryed out and cracked and should be replaced so as to be less troublesome. The rear windows are sometimes slow to go up and down. Typical other items need to be addressed, such as the radio antenna that sometimes works and other times doesn't (probably a loose connection). The radio sound system and the cassette portion work well. The AC and Heat were operable when it was stored for the winter. In all, this is a good daily driver as is, in a not perfect state; or a great car to bring to the next level, with not too much to do.However, please be aware that restoring any classic car to its original state is a task; and an expense to maintain; but a well-worth and fun way to spend quality time by yourself or as a family project. Recently installed a new fuel filter and fuel pump. The drive train has remained strong throughout the years; and there wasn't actually many miles on since the initial purchase over ten years ago. There is no apparent damage on this vehicle. The transmission shifts properly. The electronic components/gauges on this vehicle are in working order. There are no problems with the engine. There are no known defects in this vehicle. Windshield crack from a small rock in the center location, does not hamper driver or passenger.
